My customer has UCX V4.1 eco4/VMS v6.1 and wants to know if there is a way to prevent the TNA device from disconnecting after they hang up from the modem. TNA vs. LTA -- LTA devices will go OFFLINE when the Port that they are pointing to becomes unavailable.=20 -- TNA devices will go OFFLINE when the Port that they are attached to becomes unavailable. -- LTA devices will go back ONLINE when the Port that they are pointing to becomes available again. ** TNA devices do NOT go back ONLINE when the Port that they are attached to becomes available. The issue with TNA devices NOT becoming available, after the Port they are attached to resets and raises DTR, is a problem concerning modem connections. When a TNA device (Port) initiates a modem connection, the modem attached to that port makes the connection to the other modem and raises DCD. However when the TNA device is told to drop the connection, the port on the server lowers DTR and this triggers the modem to drop DCD - hence the modems disconnect and reset themselves. When the server has dropped DTR -- the TNA device looses its connection to the port and goes OFFLINE. The problem then is when the port on the server raises DTR again (the port has reset itself) the TNA device does NOT sense this and remains OFFLINE.

First of all, the incoming TELNET (TNA) connections are accepted on transient devices; that is, the TNA is deleted after the connection is broken and the final deassignment of the device is performed. For outgoing TNA devices (which are created with the TELNET application's "CREATE_SESSION" command), the current implementation of the TNDRIVER will place the device OFFLINE when the connection is broken. There is currently no support for dynamic reconnection. If dynamic reconnection were supported (which it will, in a future release) then the reconnection attempt originates from the TNA device to the remote end (i.e. where the modem is). TNAs do not behave ~~~exactly~~~ like LTAs do, as the TELNET connection actually disappears while the device may always be present. | |||||

I am sorry it took so long to reply. I will pass the information on to the customer. The transition from LTA to TNA will take some time with this customer. I am sure they will be pleased to know that this issue will be addressed in the future. Thank you for your reply. Eula Moore CSC/UCX |
