Hello, I am having a problem with SMTP, the system account can't send any mail, customer even upgraded a system to UCX V4.1-ECO4 to eliminate most of the possible problems. I logged in but couldn't find where the problem is coming from .... what we suspect is that a logical is badly interpreted somewhere but translating them manualy does not show the problem .... does anyone have an idea ? They are all welcome. Kind reagrds, Guy ROELANDTS System : heterogenous cluster - tests done on a V4090 - with VMS V6.1 + UCX V 4.1-eco4 1. Hi Guy, In your logfile: >SMBMSG$K_FILE_SPECIFICATION: >_$2$DKA300:[SYSCOMMON.SYSMGR.MAIL]97050515065606_SY >STEM.UCX_RXVMAN;1 This looks suspicious to me. Normally, in the system account if you do a 'mail set mail [.mail]' command, the mail.dir subdirectory is created in sys$specific. Try renaming the directory to sys$specific and try again. Obviously this has the disadvantage that mail received on one node in the cluster can't be read on the other one. Also check to see if user system hasn't got some strange forwarding set. UCX SMPT has been known to have difficulties with rooted logicals. Hope this helps, Oswald

I would think it's related to the problem I signaled a long time ago, on Note 4636.0 < Inbounb SMTP EXQUOTA again w 3.3 ECO10 ? > No replies SOS6::DIETZ 18 lines 18-SEP-1996 08:52 where a customer was reporting the same type of behaviour. And again, the workaround had been $ mc diskquota > MOD SYTEM /PERM=4000000 ! setup at least more than what's shown Regards from a rainy Paris, Pierre-Etienne
5485.3 | and adding EXQUOTA priv to SYSTEM? | PRSSOS::DIETZ | Pierre-Etienne DIETZ, Support/France | Tue May 06 1997 07:15 | 62 |
RE: Note 5485.2 -< EXQUOTA =?=> Add diskquota to SYSTEM ...? >- Another thing to check: The log shows that the SYSTem account trying to send a mail, runs with "curpriv=203015E081 imagpriv=0000000000 procpriv=203015E081 authpriv=2000004001" This means, from the less significant bit up to the most significant: CURPRIV=20 3015 E081 ! (I dont know for the heading "20" bit) (CMKRNL LOG_IO SETPRI SETPRV TMPMBX WORLD OPER NETMBX) PROCPRIV=20 3015 E081 (CMKRNL LOG_IO SETPRI SETPRV TMPMBX WORLD OPER NETMBX) AUTHPRIV=20 0000 4001 (CMKRNL SETPRV) Analysis: There is no EXQUOTA or BYPASS in that lists ... Pierre-Etienne, Oswald, Thank you both for your replies, the problem has been solved now, and who gave the good hint, sorry Pierre-Etienne but it is Oswald. I just renamed the mail.dir from sys$common to sys$sysroot and nmail is working fine now .... but is this normal ??? I'm not sure about that Thank you anyway Guy

Anyway, mail itself wont let you create the mail subdirectory in common, so your customer must have done that by hand... I see to workarounds. 1) use a set forward for system and read system's main from a 'normal' user. 2) use some fancy aliases: - login on one of the nodes as system - start mail and give the 'set mail_directory' command - rename the directory: $ rename sys$specific:[sysmgr]mail.dir sys$common:[sysmgr]mail_common.dir - create aliases, for each root do a: $ set file/enter=sys$sysdevice:[sysX.sysmgr]mai.dir - sys$common:[sysmgr]mail_common.dir Where X is the letter of the specific root. I use the same scheme (plus some more) with LPD to get this working properly in a cluster environment. Hope this helps, Oswald

Thank to both of you, I suggested already to the guy from DEC who manages those systems to setup forwarding from the system accounts in the cluster Rgds, Guy |
