5429.0. "nfs problem with vms-to-vms mode" by UTRTSC::KNOPPERS (Oswald Knoppers) Fri Apr 11 1997 06:14

Hi,

Question about vms-to-vms mode with nfs.

Between two vms systems (ucx 4.1 eco 4) i have setup NFS. The following
works ok:

On server side:

$ define sysuaf NETW_USER:[KNOPPERS]SYSUAF.DAT
$ mc authorize
%UAF-E-NAOFIL, unable to open system authorization file (SYSUAF.DAT)
-RMS-E-FNF, file not found, where did you leave it?
Do you want to create a new file? y
UAF>  Exit
%UAF-I-DONEMSG, system authorization file modified
%UAF-I-NAFNOMODS, no modifications made to network proxy database
%UAF-I-RDBNOMODS, no modifications made to rights database
$

On the client side:

$ define sysuaf $3$DNFS3:[000000]SYSUAF.DAT;1
$ mc authorize
UAF> sho */br
       Owner Username UIC Account Privs Pri Directory

                     DEFAULT         [200,200]             Normal  4 Disuser
SYSTEM MANAGER SYSTEM [1,4] SYSTEM All 4 SYS$SYSROOT
:[SYSMGR]
UAF>

So I am able to access a 'Indexed, Prolog: 3, Using 4 keys' file through NFS
this way.

Now on the other hand if the SYSUAF.DAT file is created via NFS I get an error:

$ mc authorize
%UAF-E-NAOFIL, unable to open system authorization file (SYSUAF.DAT)
-RMS-E-FNF, file not found, where did you leave it?
Do you want to create a new file? y
%UAF-F-CREERR, unable to create system authorization file (SYSUAF.DAT)
-RMS-F-PLV, unsupported prolog version
$

The file is indeed created, but not usable, analyze/rms gives:

*** VBN 1: Information for locating area descriptors from prolog is invalid.
Unrecoverable error encountered in structure of file.

One other thing I notice is that if I copy a good version of sysuaf.dat to
the NFS disk the file remains intact.

Questions:

- Is it supported to create these types of files using nfs (in vms-to-vms
  mode)?
- If so, because copy seems to work fine, would this be an UCX bug or an
  authorize bug.

BTW in my customers case, this is not a problem with sysuaf.dat, but he is
having exact the same problem with his own application, I am just using
authorize to reproduce the problem...

Thanks,

Oswald

    We haven't seen this reported before. I would expect this to work.
    I'll add it to our list, but if the customer needs a timely official
    response you should submit an IPMT. Thanks.
