5427.0. "UCX$TELNETSYM and volume ownership" by UTOPIE::BRAUN_R () Thu Apr 10 1997 07:49
Hi,
my customer has the following problem:
UCX 4.0 on a VAX, TELNET-printing is working fine, but with some
special protection settings for the print file, the behaviour is
a little bit strange:
A file is owned by SYSTEM, user WIPPEL is not in the same group
as SYSTEM, no world-protections for the file.
A local VMS-access is possible only due to volume ownership for
user WIPPEL (copy,dir,..), a rather deep VMS internal...
When printing this file via a telnetsym-queue, it is not possible
to print this file --> SYSTEM-F-NOPRIV-message (see below).
This sounds similar to the ACL-problem of NFS: special VMS protection
behaviour, running in the process context of a user, cannot be
simulated in a privileged, central process running under SYSTEM
or some other privileged account. Simulating full VMS-behaviour
would require to keep pace with all VMS-versions, sometimes it
would not be possible and in any case it would result in slow
and extensive checks,...
Nevertheless I would like to get some info: should it be possible,
any plans, QAR required (and meaningful) ?
Thanks in advance,
Ralph
