Hi Mauro,
I guess that what you need works: I have just done a 1 minute test...
Hope that will help,
regards,
Pierre-Etienne
My PC (W95) My VMS Server: prssos.evt.dec.com
NETSCAPE AlphaVMS 7.1
Netscape Mail: Mail gateway = prssos UCX V4.1 ECO 3
UCX POP3 Server
Test:
1.On NETSCAPE, display the IPMTWWW page,
at (example)
http://grocho.ogo.dec.com:8010/ipmt-www/
2.Click on FILE
3.Click on MAIL DOCUMENT
4.Mail To: [email protected] <CR>
Subject: Testing with: "IPMT WWW Home Page" <CR>
Attachment: ipmt-www/ [grey field, non clickable]
Content: [field entered by Netscape]
http://grocho.ogo.dec.com:8010/ipmt-www/
5.Click on SEND
7. New mail on node PRSSOS from
SMTP%"[email protected]"
(09:58:48)
8.Click on the "Retrieve Mail" ICON
9.A mail is displayed on the PC' screen:
Subject: Testing with: IPMT WWW Home Page
Date: Wed, 02 Apr 1997 10:01:20 +0200
From: Pierre-Etienne Dietz <[email protected]>
Organization: UCX-VMS Support-FRANCE
To: [email protected]
http://grocho.ogo.dec.com:8010/ipmt-www/
[this line appears as the 1st text line, underscored]
[then, the attachment, a set of html pointers, is interpreted
by Netscape, and displayed correctly]
10. Summary:
The received mail follows (in fact it's another one,
because the 1St mail being read, it has been deleted from
the VMSmail folder; so, don't checck the "time" fileds)

| Dear Pierre-Etienne,
I supose you didn't understand my question, mainly because my english
is not so good. I'll try again.
The test you did I also did over here. The problem is a bit different
and I supose it's unsuported, but...
I edited (edit/edt) a text file in the VMS server, that contains HTML
statements. Sent it to a PC client through VMSmail, that I known is not
able to works with attachements. This message when arrives in the client
and is accessed through NETSCAPE mail, it is read as a plain text file.
Is there any trick in SMTP/POP3 that permits to send file as an
attachement of the mail body (using MIME protocol) and interpreted by the
NETSCAPE (MIME compliant) in the client PC?
I Known that VMSMAIL is not smart (MIME-compliant) to work with
attachements.
Best regards, Mauro Aquino, MCS/CSC-Rio.

Sorry Mauro,
I read your question too fast...

I too tried to make (edit) a file containing a MIME compliant body,
on a VMS system, then send it to my VMS POP server, then retrieve it
with a PC POP client (Netscape) ==> No success at all.
I guess that the MIME RFCs must be respected perfectly; the problem here
is that there are a lot of MIME RFCs, and I have been told that
reading all these RFCs was probably not a good idea:
... and in my case, the reading of
LASSIE::UCX$INTERNAL:POP_README.TXT 122/126 17-NOV-1996
LASSIE::UCX$INTERNAL:POP_RELEASE_NOTES.TXT 24/27 16-OCT-1996
allowed us to find how to configure UCX$POP... to make it
transport MIME (binary) attachments.
So, some ideas for your goal, would be
- to examine the structure of a mail sent by a PC (in example NETSCAPE)
to a VMS SMTP server, with the TCPIPTRACE DCL tool.
- or to ask the UCX POP3 developper, whether he has a brief
and concise MIME specification.
- or to ask in a MESSAGING conference (in exmple, a few STARS references:
(LJSRV2::INTERNET_TOOLS) MIME attachment
(FORTY2::MAILBUS_400) A question on MIME types/subtypes
(VMSZOO::VMSMAIL) MIME needs are growing.
(FORTY2::MAILBUS_400) MIME and UUENCODE decoding automatically?
(FORTY2::MAILBUS_400) TeamLinks MIME not decoded by MAILbus 400 SMTP gateway
(TURRIS::DIGITAL_UNIX) How do I turnoff DECnet mail Mime encoding
(ABBOTT::TEAMLINKS_WINDOWS) TL 2.7 EFT2: What is meant by MIME support??? ).
I known it's not a good help... Anyway, good luck!
Rgds,
Pierre-Etienne

| Dear Pierre,
In fact, the main problem is that VMSmail is not MIME compliant and
never will be. I'm discussing with the mailing people about a possible
solution through Mailworks for VMS, that seems to be able to attach
file respecting RFC standards.
You did a great and helpfull job. Thanks a lot and best regards.
Mauro Aquino, MCS/CSC-Rio.
