This question may not belong in this conference. Moderator, please move it if it is call for. Can customer use alias host to send mail for the "TO" prompt? Let me try to explain. I have a customer that is using VMSmail to send messages via SMTP. At the "TO" prompt, he is typing [email protected] to send mail to that user. What he would like to do is use the username@aliashost at the "TO" prompt. Aliashost would be the alias that would associate to host.cxo.dec.com. Therefore allowing the luxury of not typing out the complete host address. Is this do-able? I told the customer that I doubt it. But I would ask the experts. I also told the customer what he can do is setup a logical in his LOGIN.COM for each user he usually send mail to and then use the logical at the "TO" prompt. I've tested this out and it works fine. Any suggestions on this question? Thanks, Phil

If you are in the cxo.dec.com domain, any connection to "host" automatically goes to "host.cxo.dec.com", assuming that your bind configuration is correct. If you are in another domain or if you want to use a name other than "host", you need a CNAME in the DNS database for _your_ domain aliasing "othername" to "host" (or "host.cxo.dec.com."). You might also get by by putting that alias in your local hosts file as an alternative name for host.cxo.dec.com, but you're asking for trouble doing it that way, because somebody else might start using "othername" for a real other host. -Tom

The problem is that with the enhancements made to mail that an address in the form user@host will be rewritten as host::user and mail will send it through decnet/mail11. Only if the host is fully qualified (i.e. there is at least one dot in it) it will be treated as a smtp address. Starting with VMS 7.0 you can define the logical MAIL$INTERNET_MODE (value SMTP) to change this. See also note 4814 in this conference. Regards, Oswald

re: .-1 Ah. Right. Well, a CNAME of "mini.name" in your domain's DNS database aliased to "host" or "host.cxo.dec.com." would at least allow "[email protected]" to work. -Tom
