Has anyone run into this problem with smtp disconnecting.
The particulars:
ALPHA 3000/500
OpenVMS Version 6.2
PMDF Mail version 5.0-6
UCX Version 4.1
I seem to be having a problem with inbound email from the internet
getting disconnected on arrival (FIN) from our ALPHA. Performs its
three-way hand-shake and then FINishes its connection and bounces
back to our firewall node WORF. WORF then forwards back to the ALPHA
the same message and it arrives OK.
This of course happens inter-mittently,(don't all bugs..:), and
according to the Network Sniffer Software approximately 1 in every 33
messages received.
MX (mail exchange) records under DSN have been configured to attempt
delivery to the ALPHA (snyflcaa.fingerlakes.edu) first, then fall back
to WORF (snyflcd.fingerlakes.edu). Seems to happen at no particular
time of day (morning,afternoon, evening, night). Since we are on break
and very few students are around, it concerns me that it could rear its
ugly head on a larger scale once classes start again on 26-Jan-1997.
When WORF's System Admin uses the Network General Sniffer, the remote
system (in this latest case it was remote host
empyrean.fdemocracy.org/208.210.124.24)
connects to the SMTP port on the ALPHA (port ), it sends a SYN, ALPHA
responds with a SYN/ACK, which it should. Then the remote system
sends back its ACK to complete the three-way handshake. The next frame
sent is supposed to be is SMTP data "220 snyflcaa.fingerlakes.edu --
Server ESMTP (PMDF V5.0-6 ####) from the ALPHA. The ALPHA instead sends
a FIN packet to end the session. This initiates the closing of the
SMTP session without a transfer of email from the remote host. I will
enclose a copy of the SNIFFER reports with "good" and "bad" sessions.
PMDF and UCX configuration info, and any pertinent logs I can find that
possibly relate to this 'problem'. The bottom line is that the mail
'Gets delivered'. Just the Worf System Admin is a little miffed by all
the traffic. I also set the UCX Service/limit=10 (form 4 default) and
rebooted Friday night before going home. Didn't seem to help.
