Replication Option for Rdb version 6.0-11
On-line Kit Location for Oracle employees
As an Oracle employee, you should be able to use FTP to copy the Replication
Option for Rdb (formerly DEC Data Distributor) savesets from any of the follow-
ing machines: MOKLOC, DEBIT, KREDIT, SQLRUS, QUILL. The user account FTP_KITS
will put you in the directory where the files currently reside.
If you are a Digital employee reading this note, you will not be able to access
the kits in this way. These machines are not accessible from the Digital Engin-
eering network. You must order kits from Oracle corporation via normal
channels.
The saveset files are these:

Replication Option for Rdb 7.0
Beta 3 Kits Available
IMPORTANT NOTICE
----------------
If you use the Rdb Replication Option or you have customers who do,
be aware that important changes have occurred in this Beta release
of the product. For those who depend on this product we recommend
strongly that you obtain a Beta kit and try testing with it.
HIGHLIGHTS
----------
The following are the major changes in this third field test release
of the Replication Option (version T7.0-5):
o Support for Oracle Transfer Databases
The design of the transfer database tables has changed so that
one now has the option of using either Oracle Rdb or Oracle
Rdbms (e.g., Oracle7) as the repository for the transfer
database tables. This is a significant change in the database
design and in the Replication Option software that manages the
transfer tables.
If you installed an earlier test kit, you will have to use the
Replication Option conversion procedure, DDAL$CONVERT_TR_DB.COM,
to change the transfer database from the old format to the new.
Also, if you have application programs which directly read the
transfer database tables, the programs will have to be rewritten.
Table names, column names, and column attributes have changed
in a number of instances.
The Replication Option startup procedure, DDAL$START_TR_MON.COM,
has changed to accomodate the choice between the two database
systems.
o Support for Multiversion Rdb
It is now possible to run the Replication Option with a multi-
version variant of Rdb without changing the Rdb version in the
SYSTEM logical name table. A number of the command procedures
for the Replication Option have been modified to support this
new mode of operation. Details are in the product release
notes.
o More Performance Options
A number of options have been implemented to give you more
control over the execution of transfers. Most of these options
are designed to improve product performance. Refer to the
release notes for specific information.
o Transfers into PC and UNIX Databases
Look in the release notes for a description of how to transfer
data into PC databases, such as, MS Access and MS SQL Server
and how to transfer into Oracle Rdb databases on Digital UNIX.
HOW TO OBTAIN A BETA KIT
------------------------
Oracle employees can use FTP to copy the Replication Option for Rdb
savesets and literature from any of the following machines: MOKLOC,
DEBIT, KREDIT, SQLRUS, QUILL. After logging into the user account,
FTP_KITS, no password required, change directory to where the kits
reside:
ftp MOKLOC
Name(MOKLOC:username): FTP_KITS
cd rdb_replication_option
cd 7_0_beta_release_3
If you are a Digital employee reading this note, you will not be able
to access the kits in this way. These machines are not accessible
from the Digital Engineering network. Instead, you must order a kit
from Regina Phelps, our field test adminsitrator, by sending mail on
the Internet to [email protected].

Replication Option for Rdb 7.0
Beta 3 Kits ADDENDUM
SERIOUS ERROR IN BETA 3 KITS
----------------------------
If you plan to use the Rdb Replication Option Beta kits to transfer
data into non-Oracle databases (something other than Oracle Rdb or
Oracle Rdbms), you will need to copy a revised software image to
replace one in the Beta kit.
The revised software image is the copy process image, version T7.0-6.
It can be copied from the same directory as for the Beta 3 savesets.
Refer to the previous reply to the base note for instructions on how
to copy the savesets. We have provided two copy process images, one
for OpenVMS Alpha systems and one for OpenVMS VAX systems. Which is
which is specified in the filename extension.
For OpenVMS VAX: DDAL$COPY_PROCESS.VAX;1
For OpenVMS Alpha: DDAL$COPY_PROCESS.ALPHA;1
Copy the appropriate one of these two files to the following system
directory: SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE] and in the process rename the file
to DDAL$COPY_PROCESS.EXE. Since a file will already exist in that
directory by the same name, make sure that this new file has the
highest version number.
After copying the file into the system directory, you can install
it in place of the older one by shutting down the Replication Option
and then restarting it:
@SYS$MANAGER:DDAL$STOP_TR_MON
@SYS$STARTUP:DDAL$START_TR_MON

also copy the postscript version of the documentation.

o On Alpha
Requires OpenVMS Alpha V6.1 or higher
o Required database products
You must have one of the following sets of products in order to run
the Replication Option:
Oracle Rdb7
or
Oracle7 and the Rdb Transparent Gateway for Oracle7
See note 5.? to find out what's new in version 7.0.
As an Oracle employee, you should be able to use FTP to copy the
Replication Option for Rdb savesets and documentation from any of the
following machines: MOKLOC, DEBIT, KREDIT, SQLRUS, QUILL. The user
account FTP_KITS will put you in the home directory, FTP_KITS.
If you are a Digital employee reading this note, you will not be able
to access the kits in this way. These machines are not accessible from
the Digital Engineering network. You must order kits from Oracle
corporation via normal channels.
Here is the location of the OpenVMS Alpha savesets, DDALA070.x. The
UTILITIES directory contains a tool used to print out the contents of
the RDB$CHANGES table in a replicated source database. It is not part
of the software sold to customers. It is a diagnostic tool for customer
support.
