| We once went on a camping trip with another friend who owns a
stretch limo (2 wheel drive!). Anyway (to make a long
story short) we were flying down a mountain dirt road -
doing 65 mpg, sliding the stretch around the corners listening
to a group call Barney Rubble and the blank blank blank. (don't ask)
This group sings about some very strange things which cannot be
brought up in this conference. They are some New York city gronge
rock group..
Anyway if you are into that New York city trash rock I suppose
this is "good driving music". I was more fasinated with attempting
to understand what they were singing about then anything...
Later that evening (at the bar) we found that we had puntured
a hole in the gas tank and lost 1/4 tank of gas. This night
was one for the books!

| Re: .20.
I don't think so. I think Jonathan Richman wrote the "Roadrunner" I'm
talking about, because the lyrics refer to Route 128 and driving past a
Stop & Shop. It's from the early 1970s, and can be found on the only
real album that the Modern Lovers released. The drummer went on to the
Cars, and the keyboardist to the Talking Heads.
P.S. The Sex Pistols performed "Roadrunner" live, and ripped it off in
their own song "EMI."

RE: .23
Joan Jett covered that song also.
And it appears that most of you are just listing your favorite
songs/albums instead of listing good driving music. Driving
music has to rock, which is more effective at keeping you awake
[and alert], especially at higher db levels.
Add to that a catchy bass/drum line that gets you tapping [or
banging] your hands against the steering wheel or seat and voc-
als you can shout out along with the album and it'll keep your
interest [but please make sure you pay attention to where you're
going!!].
For example:
"Rage Against the Machine" - Rage Against the Machine
White-boy heavy rap, so to speak. Guitar effects are
excellent. The vocalist is no Engelbert Humperdinck,
but would you really expect him to be?
"Psalm 69" - Ministry
Industrial - quite heavy. Screeching guitars, machine-
gun influenced electronic drum sounds, grating vocals.
If this puts you to sleep then there's something ser-
iously wrong with you.
"Rat Race" - Child's Play
Your basic straight-forward hard rock with a couple of
ballads tossed in for variety. The best album of '91
[or whatever year it came out].
"Unleashed in the East" - Judas Priest
One of the better-sounding live metal bands, these guys
never fail to impress me with their talent.
"Hairpick" - Blues Saraceno
Guitar instrumentals. Blues is 24 now and this is his
3rd album [which is 2 years old]. The kid wails.
"Raging Slab" - Raging Slab
Some of you might have heard me mention these guys once
or twice. Skynyrd meets Metallica ... combine southern
hard rock and whacked-out timing changes and you have
Raging Slab. And toss a couple ballads in for good
measure.
"Oh No! It's Devo" - Devo
The ultimate techno band of the 70's/80's, this album
will have you singing along and banging your hands on
the steering wheel once you get a feel for it.
"Deaf Gods of Babylon" - Lord Tracy
Medium/hard rock album that is ALOT of fun and deserves
repeated listenings. This band really knows how to
rock and has a great time doing it.
"Paradise Theater" - Styx
Yeah, I know that this was 1 of the 1st albums that you
think they "sold out" on, but hey, it's fantastic.
"Headhunter" - Krokus
Combine Marc Storace's "less than perfect" vocals and
Fernando von Arb's wailing guitar riffs and you've got
a recipe for a kick-butt album.
There are a bunch more, but hey, I can't list 'em all. And I
just noticed that I listed 10 albums in this entry, which is
exactly the same as the number of CD's that the changer in my
Duster holds. So it looks like I just decided which albums to
put in there when I finish with the ones that are in there.

I have heard rumors of people who have made copies from albums to
create tapes of selected songs. The rumors often imply they often use
friends albums to make such tapes. Given this is illegal I in no way
promote such activity as it starts us on the slippery slope to the end
of civilization 8^).
Then again the complete CDs aren't too shabby in their own right.

| Thanks for all the suggestions, which I will take up. Pippa (daughter)
is taping Oasis albums as I write this, Simon (son #1) is taping Huey
Lewis and Daniel (son #2) is taping Beatles albums.
Wendy has just dug out Koyaanasqatsi, which I do love dearly for
driving to and we have several X-Files stories on tape.
I'll be off tonight....see you in 2 weeks or so.

Have a meal at "Diocletian" which is about a block towards the
cathedral from the Rathaus; on your right with the old bridge
behind you.
If you have time, take a tour of the Residenz (the palace in town,
which is much more interesting than the castle on the hill).

German group Kraftwerk has an album from about 1974 called Autobahn.
There is a 22 minute 30 second song on there of the same name. It
is excellent driving music.

Do they not do more techno stuff nowadays. I am sure I saw a video of
them on MTV about 3 years abck, and it sounded pretty techno to me
then?

RE: Kraftwerk
They are an electronic band who started in the early 70's. They
are pioneers in electronic music. There were musicians who came
before them into electronic music though, so I'm not saying they
were the first to produce it. Yes, much of the techno crowd was
influenced by this group. They don't do much anymore,
and have kind of broken up. A couple of years ago, they did a
remix album of all their "Hits". You wouldn't hear their songs
on many radio stations in the US though. Certainly not any pop
stations. On the remix album, they cut the length of Autobahn
down to a little over 9 minutes. The original is still the best
though. You can still find their stuff on CD, probably as imports.
I think Newbury Comics here in Nashua still has a bin for them.

I do remember hearing Kraftwerk's "Autobahn", but I don't
remember the song at all except that it was a long instrum-
ental.
I was working at a restaurant at the time, doing "opening"
duties like cleaning and sweeping and stocking, and I used
to crank up the radio in the bar and listen to 94.1 WHJY's
"Rock'n' Roll Root Cellar" and they played it 1 Sunday morn-
ing. That's also where I heard Firesign Theater's "Nick
Danger" for the 1st time.

call Coors "beer", however. 8^) )
For some reason, I can never remember the titles of most CDs, which is
why my list was so small (and even then I missed the Corrs' title -
one I listen to frequently, I might add).
For instance, there is a Loreena McKennit CD that has a ONE WORD title
- a CD that I enjoy often - that I can't remember at the moment.
To add a couple more CDs to the topic at hand:
Sarah McLaughlan - Touch
