754.0. "Hispanic Boycott." by ACISS1::ROCUSH () Thu Jul 11 1996 17:32

Apparently there is going to be new boycott effort in Chicago.
Dominic's, a Chicago-area supermarket, assisted the INS in arresting
several employees who were illegal aliens. According to the reports
Dominic's was informed that there were employees who had used
fraudulent documentation to obtain and retain employment with the food
store. Once management became aware of the situation they contacted
the INS and had the employees arrested and deported.

    So far, so good.

Now there are several Hispanic groups that are organizing a protest and
planning a boycott of Dominic's stating that the chain is racist and
unfair to Hispanics. They are demanding that Dominc's apologize to the
Hispanic community for their actions in having these people arrested.

Am I missing something or what. These were illegal aliens and if
Dominic's did not report it and take aggressive action to eliminate
these employees they would have faced huge fines and other actions.

Is there any justification for this planned action, other than the
normal politically correct, etc nonsense. Other than that, can anyone
support this type of misplaced actions.

The store is in a tough position. They could face a lot in fines for
not reporting them. The immigration issue is not the store's and they
should not be held accountable for dropping a dime on illegals. If
they only selected hispanics for reporting, possibly there might be
    some cause for outrage.

It's not about race, but nationality.

Simple. I have plenty of hispanic friends that were born right here in
the good 'ol USA. Race and origin of birth are two seperate things. If
they're not US citizens or are in this country illegally, they have no
    business stealing US jobs.

I'm sure that the airhole who was on the Today Show the other morning
claiming that we didn't want to restrict educational benefits to illegal
aliens as it might piss them off and drive them away, and, afterall, we
need to depend upon them for farm and domestic labor in Kaliphornia,
would be more than happy to support it. He seems to like the idea of
illegal aliens having all sorts of bennies.

754.8A bit of a side track.ACISS1::ROCUSHFri Jul 12 1996 10:5214
As a bit of a side note to this, there apparently is/was a Clinton
re-election commercial highlighting all of his accomplishments. One of
which was his firm stance on illagal immigration. The commercial
shows, supposedly INS agents arresting illegal aliens. It is quite
clear from the commercial that these people are Hispanic.

I wonder why the same people who complained so bitterly about the Willy
Horton ad as being racist aren't making the outcry at this time? There
is no question that the people identified in Clinton's ad are
Central/South American natives. Couldn't this be considered as
appealing to the same racist fears/prejudices that the Horton ads did?

    Just curious.

I thought the Willy Hornton ad was racist.

If this ad is as you describe, it sounds racist to me, too.

That's certainly how I'd consider it. Then again, it seems that no one
loses any votes by appealing to racist fears and prejudices. Sounds like a
sound campaign strategy for the '90s (both 1990s and 1890s, btw).

I just don't have to like it, that's all.
