about 100k square feet, something like 4 or 5 empty right now.

Jim, they took your cubes away so that the FAB Engineers can have them,
right? From what I hear, everyone might end up in building 1 by the entrance in
a few months. Our group which is over there now (I'll be joining them soon)
will come back to building 2. What is ironic is the techs over here have their
own offices right now.

Which amounts to what, 2.25% of the total MCS workforce? Seems like
tweaking isn't too unreasonable a term to use, particularly since not
all are actually getting the axe (some are being retrained and moved to
other parts of the company.) In point of fact, a number of divisions in
the company are hiring workers, and the company-wide headcount is
expected to increase slightly.

Odd that out here at the tip of the Digital spear most of the talent is
giving itself the package. In the last month I've seen two of the most
talented people walk. There has been noone to replace them and really
most of the money made by the MCS contract base is by those of us with
skills that we can't reproduce! Oddly at the last after-hours (17:30 -
20:30 no ot) district meeting we had a new General area manager told us
about the staff (appeared to us as a bunch of old Maynard chowder
society and drum corps) he created to help do his job. Also when asked
why we should be excited about the future for MCS he said something to
the effect "not my problem, your problem." This sure seems to be a
interesting way of building a future.

Yup, that seems to be the story all around. Some of our most
talented people have picked up and moved to Colorado, New Mexico, and
Texas. More money, more opportunity for upward mobility, etc. Digital
may be making some money now, but they need to start offering their
good people some incentive to stay.

fronts, most with dangling partial signs, forlorn space-for-rent
notices, plus the struggling ones that I'd guess won't last long,
I came across several town businesses that seem none the worse.
MacDonald's. The hardware store. The townie bars. Surprising
