Disney is a great institution and in the context, the mighty ducks
sounds like a fun movie.
The NHL was at one time an institution of high esteem. It wasn't too
long ago when hockey players in the NHL were talented and as far as
class, out did the beer drinkers in baseball and the losers in the NFL.
They didn't play for the business but played for the sheer love of the
game. Even Stan Makita, the scummiest NHL player of the last thirty
years out does some of the mediocre players of today in class.
No...the NHL has become a whore. They've joined their comrades in the
baseball and football leagues. The Mighty Ducks???? pullllease.....

Group Says Disney Sneaks Sex Into Films
By LEEF SMITH
The Washington Post
You say you've watched The Lion King 50 times with your children and
never caught the "sex" scene?
Look again, says a Stafford, Va. based Christian group that is
protesting split-second imagery that it says has debased the G rated
animated movie.
American Life League (ALL), an anti-abortion organization boasting
300,000 supporters across the country, has asked Disney to apologize to
its fans for including what it says is inappropriate sexual material in
several of its films.
The most recent example, it says, involves Simba, star of Disney's Lion
King. Forlorn over the death of his father, the young lion flops
dejectedly on the ground near the edge of a cliff. The result, offended
viewers say, is a cloud of dust particles that swirls and swoops to
form the word "sex," and then quickly fades away.
"The Walt Disney Company claims to be a provider of wholesome family
entertainment, but the message in The Lion King is not clean, it is not
wholesome, and it is not fun," said ALL spokeswoman Tracey Casale. "It
has no place in a child's movie."
Disney spokesman Rick Rhoades rebuffed the group's claims as a
"perception thing."
"They're seeing something there that isn't," Rhoades said. "It's just
ridiculous to think that we'd put out a movie containing something less
than a wholesome image."
ALL says it first learned about the Lion King scene in July when a New
York woman called to say that her 4-year-old son caught the message.
The group -- which began a boycott of Disney films in April to protest
the movie Priest, saying it misrepresented the Catholic Church --
claims the company has a long history of sneaking "sexual messages"
into its animated films.
In particular, ALL has denounced a scene in Aladdin in which it says a
voice whispers, "Good teenagers, take off your clothes." The Disney
script reads: "Seat! Good Tiger. Take off and go."
Even more troubling, the group says, is a scene in The Little Mermaid
in which the minister at Ariel's wedding allegedly gets an erection.
Disney says the critics are seeing the minister's knee.
Last year, viewers of a laser disc version of Disney's Who Framed Roger
Rabbit claimed that when they freeze-framed the animation, they found
everything from frontal nudity to Michael Eisner's home phone number.
"All of these movies contain something sexual in nature," insisted
Casale. "You can't help but think that Disney is not what they have
portrayed themselves to be."

It might be more appropriate to call them the Colorado Avalanche rather

I couldn't be bothered by such trivial issues. I will work the truly
important issues..the overuse of plastic grocery bags, the direction
in which the lines should flow around the coffee urns in the cafe,
cashier stands in the cafe that are not man..er, personed at all times,
and standardization of all copy machines so that he paper to be copied

I doubt that. There are NCAA rules about ages of varsity athletes.
When I was in college at a Division one school the oldest you could be
and compete on a varsity team was I believe 24 or 25 (which almost
always were foreign students). It's possible the upper limit has
moved up to 26 but I doubt Michigan has everyone on their team at the
upper limit. Any pro prospects they have would only play college in the
18-20 age range. Any kids directly out of high school (or Canadian
juniors) would be 18-23.

| I think the NHL should go into a system where, after the overtime
period, if the score is tied, a series of penalty shots would be used,
as in Europe. How many times do you watch a hotly contested game end in
a tie after the 3rd, and both teams are content to play for the tie in
the extra period. It's very anti-climatic.

| No No No! I hate that system! The Canadians lost the gold medal in
the last Olympics because of penalty shots and it was awful. It places
too much blame on the goalie or individual player (in this case, Paul
Kariya) who misses the shot. The players interviewed after the game
don't like it either - these were players from both the winning *and*
losing teams. They should just keep on going and going. Eventually
somebody is going to score. Hockey is a TEAM sport and a game should
be won or lost by a team.
|
684.117 | | CTHU26::S_BURRIDGE | | Tue Apr 02 1996 16:56 | 7 |
| Right.
In a championship game, where you need a winner, use sudden-death
overtime. Otherwise, the current system of a 5-minute overtime period
when it's a tie at the end of regulation time gives ample opportunity
for the teams to go for the win. Going to penalty shots is arbitrary
and unfair.

I remember the Bruins vs. Edmonton in '90 was 3 or 4 OT periods, but
I'm sure there must have been longer.
To me, the penalty shot is the most exciting moment in hockey. Too many
games that are exciting for the first 60 minutes are a bore for the
last 5 because each team is content to settle for a tie. It would
remain a team sport if each team designates 3 forewards and 2
defensemen (perhaps the last 5 on the ice at the end of OT) to each
take a shot, with the team with the most goals being the winner. If
after the penalty shots are taken the game is still tied, the process
could be repeated, with an overtime period, then penalty shots, etc.

Stanley Cup playoff information
The quest for the 1996 Stanley Cup begins Tuesday, April 16 when 16 teams
begin play with the conference quarterfinals. The four rounds of playoffs
will conclude in June with the crowning of the Stanley Cup champion.
Beginning this season, each series is designed to follow either a "Schedule
A" or "Schedule B" format, subject to building availability. This is
different from past years when the Eastern Conference followed one set of
dates and the Western Conference followed another.
Changing the format for scheduling playoffs should reduce the possibility of
teams playing back-to-back games. The format will also enable doubleheaders
to be televised during the early rounds and it will provide fans the
opportunity to watch games involving their favorite team on one day and
teams in the same conference the next.
The determination of the schedule that a series will follow is based upon
the following criteria: the individual matchup, building availability,
travel issues, television commitments. Any team that plays its first-round
games on Schedule A could play its second-round games on Schedule B based on
the listed factors.
The final playoff schedules will be announced when the matchups are
determined.
Playoff format
All series will be played under a best four-of-seven format in a 2-2-1-1-1
basis with the higher-seeded team getting the first two games of the series
at home and the extra home game. The one exception is a series that would
involve a Central Division team versus a Pacific Division team. In such a
series, the higher-ranked team has the choice of playing a 2-2-1-1-1 or a
2-3-2 format. If the 2-3-2 format is selected, the higher-ranked team will
also have the choiceof playing Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 at home or Games 3, 4,
and 5 at home. This option is in place for each of the first three rounds.
Conference quarterfinals (Series A-H)
The four regular season divisional champions are ranked in the first two
positions in their respective conferences, the teams with the greatest
number of points being ranked first in their respective conferences. The
remaining six playoff clubs in each conference will be ranked based on
regular-season points. The following are the matchups based on the rankings:
Series Eastern Conference Western Conference
A 1 (Div. Winner) vs. 8 E 1 (Div. winner) vs. 8
B 2 (Div. winner) vs. 7 F 2 (Div. winner) vs. 7
C 3 vs. 6 G 3 vs. 6
D 4 vs. 5 H 4 vs. 5
Conference semifinals (Series I-L)
For the conference semifinals, the teams will be re-seeded based on the same
criteria used in the quarterfinals (division winners, followed by remaining
clubs based on regular-season points). The following are possible scenarios:
If one division winner is eliminated in the conference quarterfinals:
The remaining division winner would be seeded first, followed by the three
remaining teams in order of regular-season points. The No. 1 seed would face
the team with the fewest regular-season points, while the other two teams
would meet.
If both division winners are eliminated in the conference quarterfinals:
The remaining four teams would be ranked based on regular-season points. The
No. 1 seed would face the No. 4 seed, while the No. 2 and No. 3 teams would
meet.
If conference quarterfinal series end early:
The start dates for the Conference Semifinals may be moved up depending on a
number of factors, including building availability and travel schedules.
Conference finals (Series M and N)
The same criteria used in the selection of order for the conference
quarterfinals will again be in effect. The following are possible scenarios:
If a division winner meets a non-division winner with more regular-season
points:
The division winner would have home-ice advantage.
If conference semifinal series end early:
The start dates for the conference finals may be moved up depending on a
number of factors, including building availability and travel schedules.
Stanley Cup championship (Series O)
The Eastern Conference champion and Western Conference champion will meet in
the Stanley Cup championship. Home ice will be determined solely by the
higher number of regular-season points. Games will be played on a 2-2-1-1-1
basis. The Stanley Cup championship is scheduled to begin on June 4.
However, the series could be moved up to begin May 25, 28 or 30 if early
round playOff series end quickly.
Tie-breaking procedures
In the event that two or more teams are tied in points at the conclusion of
the regular season, the standing of the teams in each conference will be
determined in the following order:
1. Greater number of games won by the club.
2. Higher number of points earned in games against each other. If two teams
are tied and have not played an equal number of home games against each
other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the
extra home game shall not be included. If more than two teams are tied, the
higher percentage of available points earned in games among those teams
shall be used to determine the standing.
3. The greater differential between goals scored for and against for the
entire regular season.

684.146 | Re-cap of the action so far | TROOA::trp669.tro.dec.com::Chris | I am *NOT* a wind stealer! | Tue Apr 16 1996 12:57 | 30 |
| If I understand the previous note correctly, we'll have to do this round by
round.
However, if the team you picked doesn't advance, you don't get to add a new
team (does that make sense?) For example, if in the first round, you picked
Winnipeg to beat Detroit (ha ha!), and Detroit advances, you don't get to
pick Detroit as the winner in the next round, because they are already off
your sheet. If somebody can explain that better - be my guest!
So far the following people have submitted their picks:
Glen Silva
Dennis Pomeroy
Mark Levesque
Chris Butkovich (next note)
How about a few more to make it exciting? I'll extend the deadline to
5:00pm today since the first games won't be played until tonight.
Also - you have to advise me of who you think is going to score the final
Stanley Cup winning point NOW to qualify for the 25 bonus points.
Recap on point system:
1st round - 1 point per win
2nd round - 2 points per win
3rd round - 5 points per win
Finals - 10 points per win
Bonus 25 points: name the Stanley Cup winning goal scorer

| >However, if the team you picked doesn't advance, you don't get to add a new
>team (does that make sense?)
No. It opens the possibility that you could be unable to pick ANY team
in a following round.
Say you pick 6 teams right in the first round, but your two losses
occur in the same division. After reseeding, the two teams that you
lost with play each other. Your rule makes it so you don't even get to
pick a winner for that series! Yucko.
>Also - you have to advise me of who you think is going to score the final
>Stanley Cup winning point NOW to qualify for the 25 bonus points.
Too many extra points IMO. Should be 5 points, and picked just prior to
the cup series. (Isn't he a pain?! :-)
If we're stuck with picking now, I'll go with Jaromir Jagr.

|
You can't be serious about picking the person who will put in the
winning goal NOW, to get the 25 points, but say we have to choose the rest
round by round. :-( With all the players that are on the final 2 teams, it
could be any one of them. That's still a lot to narrow it to, so couldn't we
wait until the finals to make this decision?

684.150 | whataya think? | TROOA::BUTKOVICH | I am NOT a wind stealer! | Tue Apr 16 1996 14:24 | 9 |
| but but but..... that's why it's worth so many points! And, it also
makes you commit to who you think the Stanley Cup winning team is going
to be. I think the round by round scenerio makes it too easy to get
points, especially if your team is out and you get to re-pick.
However... I can see Mark's point. How about this? Pick your goal
winning scorer now (for the BIG points!) and then go with Mark's
suggestion that you re-pick teams each round. (I think this is going
to eventually lead to everyone picking the same teams, but we'll see)
|

| >(I think this is going

All that means is that the early rounds will be more important, and
anyone who picks an upset will be ahead of the field.

1) pick new teams each round
2) pick a player now
Dennis and Glen - I need your player picks
Mark - just confirming - you are going with Jagr?
For those of you not playing.... it makes the playoff much more
fun to watch/follow if you've got a team to cheer for. Why not give it
a try? ( I speak from experience - I NEVER used to watch all the
college hoops games, and this year I was madly checking the paper every

| No time for notes the next few days, but thought I'd pop in here for a
quick update. Had a great trip down to Washington, DC last week. Both my
Aussie friends and I were very impressed - toured Arlington and most of
the Mall area. Only had time to get into one of the Museums of the
Smithsonian (Air and Space) and will definitely be heading back again. The
FBI tour and other museums look like "must sees". We were disappointed
that Hillary and Bill didn't join us for "tea" as planned. Had great
weather - walking around in sandles, t's, and shorts. Saw the Digital site
off I495 (COP?)- looked very nice. Also did a quick day trip to
Williamsburg - a bit pricey ($25.00 to tour the buildings) but we hit it
lucky because the "townspeople" were acting out some "gunpowder incident"
that had taken place. Tried to stop in Gettysburg on the way home, but
there was some car show about 40 miles north in Carlyle and there wasn't a
hotel to be found for miles. We ended up in Breezewood (just off the Penn
Turnpike) before finding rooms and didn't end up backtracking the next
day - that was disappointing. You Americans love your cars, don't
you? 8*)
Now... on to more important things. As of last nights games, the standings
are as follows:
Dennis - 14 } Washington is turning out to be a good pick for you
Robbie - 13 } guys. Did you have inside information?!?
Debra - 12
Glenn - 12

minutes back in the 30s) I was amazed at the conditioning these
players showed - that's like playing two games and another 2 periods of
OT. And they weren't floating either - these guys were still hitting
each other and hustling after the puck. I'd like to see the
Leafs/Blues play that way for a 20 minute period sometime. I can
hardly keep my eyes open this morning (game ended around 2:20 am) and
can't imagine what the players must feel like. Only rested player for
the next game is going to be Super Mario, who got kicked out of last
nights game in the 2nd period for being an instigator and received a
game misconduct. The ref made some gutsy calls too - he called
for a Washington penalty shot in the 3rd OT (Ken Wregget stopping Joe
Juneau's attempt) and a Washington penalty in the 4th OT. I can't
remember if Pitts. was still on a power play when Peter Nedved scored
the winner - they were acting like they's just won the cup, and who
could blame them?

You might be right, but I wouldn't give up on them yet. Detroit wanted
this game bad and they earned it. Colorado needs to do even more
hitting, if that is possible. I think Detroit is the better team, but
it is all going to depend on who wants it more.
Did you see the cheap shot to Foote in the first period? I've seen a
lot of blood in hockey over the years, but never like it flowed out of
Foote's head, after that hit.

| Hockey Night in Canada announcers noted that what happened to Foote
happens 25 times a game... flow of blood was impressive however.
Speaking of cheap shots, Claude Lemieux's sucker-punch of Kozlov
probably falls into that category. Kozlov was the man who rubbed
Foote's face into the glass, so it may have been payback. The
Avalanche's late-2nd-period comeback was pretty impressive; nice shots
by Foote and especially Deadmarsh. This is a really good series. The
Avalanche are a very good team, and still lead the series.

greater talent and unmatched fan support.

Panthers still have yet to show up for periods 2 and 3. In three
games, they have scored four point in period one, none in 2 and nil in

Av's have so much extra talent. The team is also young enough that it
could go dynasty for the next three or four years.
Sometimes I have this nagging feeling that we in Colorado don't deserve
the Stanley Cup so quickly, we haven't suffered enough. Fortunately
that disappears quickly.

Yes and no. The FLorida Panthers have been doing business for 3 years,
and are I think (gotta research this to be sure) the quickest expansion
to finals team. The Avs (the team formerly known as the Canadiennes
(sp?)) were purchased lock stock and franchise from Quebec Canadia, and
have been around for 14 years.
Florida has a very talented (young) coach, who managed to take a team of
relative unknowns (the team is very young) and make an upstart Stanley
team out of 'em). Watch this space next season, they're gonna be in the
hunt again! ('course the Avs will keep 'em in second place..)
The Avs have a young coach also, who made some very savvy trades, and
the chemistry clicked big time. Most of the players he got were *good*,
but didn't have the right team to support their strengths - that got
cured big time when the team came together this spring.

| In overtime, the radio I was listening to was suddenly taken away!
Looks like Florida has finally come alive. One thing that bothered me
about this series is the disrespectful attitude of the Florida fans
during the national anthem. At least in Denver the crowd is reasonably
quiet, and almost everyone is standing. The Florida fans are so worked
up I was surprised they didn't start throwing rats at the singer.

Beezer made some absolutely fantastic saves. It was obvious that
Colorado was the stronger team, but I think Florida can be proud of the
way the played - the deserved to be in the final. The winning goal was
not nearly as good as some of the other shots he saved.

Actually teams made it to the finals in their first and second years in
the league but it was a cheap thrill. When the NHL went from 6 to 12
teams in 66-67(?) the expansion teams had their own division so one of
the teams had to make the finals. I believe the St. Louis Blues made
it the first two years and got crushed by one of the original six.

No, it shows how interested they are in protecting the management and
owners from player criticism in the press. Adam was PO, and he has a
right to be. The Bruins have made no attempt to be competitive, and it
shows. They make the Maple Leafs look like a well run team.
I note that they made $14M profit last year. They obviously spent
nothing on free agents to improve the club, which has manifested itself
in an owner that's fat, dumb and happy and a cellar dwelling team that
will miss the playoffs for the first time in quite a number of years
(the longest streak in pro sports, if I remember correctly.)

Ottawa, 2-2 in the series.

| Ottawa deserved to win since they had already scored during the regular
game. What good is the replay judge if the equipment doesn't work?
They should have called a timeout so they could get the tape. I bet
Hascek (sp?) makes a miraculous recovery before the next game.

| The Montreal/New Jersey game wasn't that great. Gilmour had a couple
of good opportunities to finish it off. And I hate when you get into
extra overtime periods. I can't force myself to turn it off when I've
already watched so much of the game. Glad to see Montreal finally win
it in the third OT. These teams are lucky they don't play every night
they way they used to.

so I went to bed. Seems I did the right thing.

684.552 | Game 7 - gotta love it! | TROOA::BUTKOVICH | girls just wanna have fudge | Tue Apr 29 1997 11:38 | 24 |
| 3 game 7's tonight:
Phoenix/Anaheim - I haven't seen much of this series but I give the
edge to Anaheim for the following reasons:
1) Paul Kariya
2) Jeremy Roenick being injured
3) the fact that the game is *not* being played in the American
Centre (? or whatever the Phoenix arena is called). From what I've
seen, those fans are wild and loud. A crowd of people dressed in
white, screaming for the whole game... it's got to give a bit of an
advantage to the home team
Ottawa/Buffalo - This is a hard one. I'm hoping that all the Hasek
hoopla wears Buffalo down. Too bad for Ted Nolan if it does - I think
he is a very good coach. I think Ottawa will need at least 4 goals to
win.
Dallas/Edmonton - I think this is going to be a very exciting goal
tender duel. Curtis Joseph's play on Friday night was amazing and the
game on Sunday could easily have gone the other way. I give the edge
to Edmonton because I think Cujo will keep them in the game better than
Moog at the other end. The rest of the Edmonton team better play some
good defense too and watch out for Mike Modano.

| Well, I did pretty good with my predictions. (not that anyone cares...
I'm having fun having a conversation with myself!)
Anaheim won easily over Phoenix, 3-0
Buffalo beat Ottawa in OT, 3-2 (see, I *knew* Ottawa would need 4
goals)
And the best game and series to date.... whew! What excitement!
Edmonton beats Dallas in OT. The final goal by Marchant was a thing of
beauty. Mike Modano had a great chance on a 3rd period breakaway, but
Cujo came up big again. I'm jumping on the bandwagon for this young team,
who is going to need all the help they can get in their next round
against Colorado. Two more veteran goaltenders up against each other.

| The Sunday afternoon New York/Philly game was really good. Gretzky and
Messier are fun to watch together - Wayne is most definitely on a
mission this year! There were some major penalties in the last couple
of minutes that the refs didn't bother calling. Lindros gives as good
as he gets but I think all those slashes could result in some
fisticuffs during tonights game.

| 2nd game of the finals tonight. Snow will be back in net for Philly.
Players are complaining about the Fox puck - seems it doesn't handle
the same as the regular pucks. I think the NHL is crazy for letting
Fox dictate the schedule. It doesn't do much for generating any
excitement when there is so much time between games. I know they've
worked it out so there could possibly be 3 Saturday night games but I
don't know if it's going to get to the 7th match.
On a sad note.... the reason why Don Cherry wasn't doing "Coach's
Corner" is that his wife, Rose, died of Cancer on Sunday.

| It's disappointing and really quite a surprising. I thought it was
going to be a close and exciting final. The Wings are completely
out hustling the Flyers. They're working so hard at controlling the
puck that they're making the Flyers look like a farm team. And any time
Philly does get a good shot on goal, Vernon makes the save.
