664.0. "Wake up! Yeah: *YOU*!" by SHRCTR::PJOHNSON (aut disce, aut discede) Tue Feb 27 1996 17:24

Well, IMO this conference has droned on lately, rather like a cheese
soup. It needs some life, a spark, some excitement from time to time.

Use this topic to make a stink to which critical noters will reply.

    Okay here's an item.

The information revolution has allowed an unprecedented amount of
information to be available to anyone who wants it. This in theory
would make the general populace informed on issues, and that population
    could then make informed decisions.

Unfortunately, there is so much information, and it is growing at such
an increasing rate, that no one can even remotely keep up. Also, the
techology and social changes are so fast and large that decisions need
    to be made quickly.

Thus, even though in theory the population can make informed decisions,
there is no way they can actually get informed. Thus decisions on the
highly complex issues end up being made by emotional reaction alone.

Consider some issues - Ozone depletion, Globabl warming, NAFTA, GATT,
Nuclear Power, Solar Energy, Asbestos removal, the Federal Reserve, S&L
Bailout, Genetic Engineering, Direct TV, Deregulation of phone and
cable, international trade, the space program, guns, drugs, and on and
    on.

Who should make the decisions, and how should they be made? What
happens to society when those making the decisions don't have a clue?
Is the information revolution a boon or a bane? Am I just rambling?
Does anyone care? Was there a gunman on the grassy knoll? A hospital!
what is it? (a place where sick people go, but that's beside the point)

Anyway, society is changing extremely quickly. Just how will the
    individual be able to cope?

.44>... what is the problem? I'm not aware of problems in any of those
    >areas.

That may be true, in which case the problem is a major chunk of your
pay check is going to fund a lot of this stuff. Also, you may be
losing rights and freedoms that you don't care about until the police
pound down your door, confiscate your car, computer, TV and anything
else they think is worth while and then tell you to have a nice day.

Also, take NAFTA for example - are you or someone you know about to
lose your job because of it? or will you or someone you know lose a
job if it is revoked? Then again, if you don't care, then how do
you decide to vote, or do you decide not to vote?

All of that aside, what products will you buy next? If someone is ill,
how you will pay for that care now or in the future?

    >And re: who should make the decisions: what do you think Congress and
    >our President do all day?

Are they doing their job? How are they to decide if they are also
    clueless?

Society is changing in a number of both dramatic and subtle ways. The
changing of the millenium may be momentus (whether 4 or 5 years away).
How will we as a society prepare and fair from the changes coming?

One note - computers are big and an important part to being part of the
changes that are coming. Yet there are many in my parent's generation
(who are also the ones primarily in power or high positions) who are
totally afraid of these tools. Yet there are few in my son's
generation who are afraind of the things. Thus this is a big
transition period. I wonder how well society will survive the
    transition.

I would just like to point out that the last time we had this level of
societal upheval was during the industrial revolution. No society that
went through the experince survived unscathed into the 20th century.
The ripples are still being felt today as changes started in the 1800s
finish working through the system. Note that some of the biggest
economies of the time took the biggest falls (Russia, Germany, Austria,
France, Ottoman Empire, and Britian). Yet developing countries such as
USA and Australia ended up lesser changed an in a stronger position.

This does not bode well for the USA and Japan, but Korea is looking
    good.

What if there was another gesture or movement, completely

and spreading your legs as far as you can.

That'd be pretty weird, too.

    really?? Interesting...

As an aside... I was talking to a gorgeous young female over the phone
the other night, and she stifled (or is that stiffled?) a yawn. I heard
it and immediately had the urge to yawn myself..

     I wonder what causes that?

You bored her, son.

Dating Tip:

If she immediately thereafter sez she has to go 'cos her mom's calling her, either check her driver's license (if
she HAS one yet), or try again in the Great Gene Pool Of Life.

boy, you got flattened by The Joke Truck and you never saw it coming, eh?

The Comprehension Manual pp 103-171 should explain the idea of "humour".

call if you still have trouble.

BTW:

you did bore her, she called me when she hung up with you and sobbed hysterically for HOURS.

have ms_deb explain how to avoid these sorts of problems.

Es brillig war. Die schlichten Toven
Wirrten und wimmelten in Waben;
Und aller-mmsige Burggoven
Die mohmem Rth' ausgraben.

Bewahre doch vor Jammerwoch!
Die Zhne knirschen, Krallen kratzen!
Bewahr' vor Jubjub-Vogel, vor
Frumisen Bandersntzchen!

Er griff sein vorpals Schwertchen zu,
Er suchte lang das manchsam' Ding;
Dann stehend unterm Tumtum Baum,
Er an-zu-denken fing.

Als stand er tief in Andacht auf,
Des Jammerwochen's Augen-feuer
Durch turgen Wald mit Wiffek kam
Ein burbelnd Ungeheuer!

Eins, Zwei! Eins, Zwei! Und durch und durch
Sein vorpals Schwert zerschnifer-schnck,
Da blieb es todt! Er, Kopf in Hand,
Gelumfig zog zurck.

Und schlugst Du ja den Jammerwoch?
Umarme mich, mein Bhm'sches Kind!
O Freuden-Tag! O Halloo-Schlag!
Er schortelt froh-gesinnt.

Es brillig war. Die schlichten Toven
Wirrten und wimmelten in Waben;
Und aller-mmsige Burggoven
Die mohmem Rth' ausgraben.
