| Mz Debra will be in the chorus. She's also (this should come as no
surprise to Soapboxers) our Social Director.
Right now, we need more men (more women are welcome, too) for the chorus.
In addition to the leads, we have about 30 women who have shown an interest
and only 18 men. New chorus members may join through the 8th of January.
No auditions are required for the chorus; all we ask is that you do your
best for the show and for the relief of world hunger. We invite you to
come for any or all of the next three Mondays to find out if this is your
kind of fun and to make a firm decision on January 8th.
At least four of our 18 men are uncertain at this point; one is in a snit
because he didn't get his dream lead; one has a new job where people seem
to work late a lot and he hasn't figured out if he is allowed to leave at
5:00 one night a week; one has a lot of business travel coming up; one has
increased responsibility for the care of a sick father.
So if you ever thought that storming a women's college (they didn't call it
a panty raid in those days) is what you'd like to do, and to raise money
for the relief of world hunger in the process, contact me or the directors
or just show up and find out for yourself how much fun this can be.
By the way, my role is defending my sister, The Princess Ida, and the
rest of her Girl Graduates against the onslaught of the invaders.
Love wins out in the end.

| Gilbert & Sullivan's "Princess Ida" is coming to Sudbury March 21st, 22nd,
& 23rd, featuring a number of Soapboxers past and present. All sorts of
info is available on our WWWeb page: http://www.ultra.net/~savoyard/
The latest issue of the "Sudbury Savoyards Sandwich Board" contains notes
from the Stage Director explaining how she is approaching this show which
is often thought to be misogynist. I'll cut to the chase though: we can
use YOU as volunteers, right now:
To all Sudbury Savoyards and those interested in becoming Savoyards:
HOW TO GET YOUR NAME IN OUR PROGRAM!
We would like to invite all current, past, and potential Savoyards to
participate in technical work days for our current production of
Princess Ida. This is an excellent opportunity for service to the
world community by helping us raise money for the relief of world
hunger.
We meet for set construction and painting, props construction, and costume
construction every Saturday at Hawes Hall, Sudbury United Methodist Church,
as well as Thursday evenings (costume construction) at Janice Dallas's
home in Bedford. We'll need help right through the weekend before our
March 21st opening date as well as the following Sunday to strike the set.
We can use everyone who can come, even if it's only one time or for as little
as an hour. We begin work around 10:00 am on Saturdays and work till 5:00.
We can use volunteers at any time, even right at the end to help put things
away.
We welcome children, scout groups, and anyone who wants to learn about the
technical work that goes into large-scale community theatre productions.
For more information, see our WWWeb page: http://www.ultra.net/~savoyard/
or send us mail: [email protected].
/john
P.S.: Last night the WWWeb site was updated with ticket ordering info.
P.P.S.: You get a federal tax deduction of 12 cents per mile for driving
to and from our volunteer work locations.

PRINCESS IDA, OR CASTLE ADAMANT
Tickets are now available for the Sudbury Savoyards' 1996 production of
Gilbert and Sullivan's "Princess Ida", which will be presented at the
Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Auditorium on March 21, 22, and
23. This year's show is music-directed by Jim Ravan and stage-directed
by Marion Leeds Carroll. Our own ever-gesticulating John Covert plays
one of Ida's not-intelligent brothers, Scynthius. (I was asked
off-line if John still had "that fisting problem".)
"Princess Ida" will be performed at 8:00pm on Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday, and at 2:00pm on Saturday. If bought in advance from a cast
member, tickets are $11 for adults while senior citizens and students
pay $8. Prices at the door or through the main ticket sales number,
(508) 443-8811, are $1 higher. Group rates are available.
There are Sudbury Savoyards in many facilities, and others of us are
willing to mail or hand-deliver tickets at your convenience. Please
feel free to contact me at POWDML::HANGGELI or 223-8921.
* All proceeds are donated to the relief of world hunger *

Like you know ANYTHING about them.
Lofty? Why? Just because we do Gilbert & Sullivan rather than Andrew
Lloyd Webber or Rogers & Hammerstein or Lerner & Lowe? Surely you're
not so declass that you'd snub a group based on that.
I'll tell you how "lofty" we AREN'T - NOBODY gets paid, nobody. In any
other amateur theatre groups, the directors get paid. The orchestra
always gets paid. Often the producer gets paid. Nobody gets paid -
everyone donates their time and effort.
In other amateur theatre groups, it can be hell even getting into the
chorus if you aren't connected. Sudbury Savoyards allows anyone who
wants to sing to be in the chorus, no audition necessary. If you want
to be in the show, you ARE in it.
And every single penny over expenses is donated to the relief of world
hunger through the Sudbury United Methodist Church. Other amateur
theatre groups have a nice fat bank account.
This is a good group of nice people.

The Sudbury Savoyards present Gilbert & Sullivan's
PRINCESS IDA, or Castle Adamant
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 21, 22, and 23,
8pm each night, with an additional 2pm show on Saturday
Performances at the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School,
located off Concord Road in Sudbury (maps are available)
All proceeds are donated for the relief of world hunger
through our sponsor, the Sudbury United Methodist Church
Friends,
It's the War of the Sexes set in medieval times, in Gilbert & Sullivan's
musical comedy, "Princess Ida, or Castle Adamant". Princess Ida was
married to Prince Hilarion when they were babies, but she has founded
a university to teach all women to abjure "tyrant man". The Prince
is determined to get her back. The resulting action includes men
pretending to be women, women arming for war like men, sword fights, and
male warriors and female academics screaming "Defiance!" at each other.
Since this is Gilbert & Sullivan, the show also includes lots of witty
dialog, light hearted lyrics and a glittering array of musical numbers.
Also, since this is Gilbert & Sullivan, it has a happy ending, with the
radicals on both sides finding common ground in "the sway of love".
But don't just take my word for it. Here is what some of the characters
from the show have to say:
"Darwinian man", though well behaved
At best is only a monkey, shaved!
Lady Psyche (a teacher at the college)
A women's college! Maddest folly going!
What can girls learn within these walls worth knowing?
Florian (Prince Hilarion's friend)
A hundred maidens here have sworn to place
Their feet on [Man's] neck.
Princess Ida (to her new students)
They told me men were hideous, idiotic, and deformed!
They are quite as beautiful as women are!
Melissa (a young student at Ida's college)
You are welcome to contact me if you are interested in buying tickets.
General admission is $12, students/seniors $9, with a $1 discount if you
buy tickets from any cast member. Or call 508-443-8811 to order tickets.
I hope to see you there!
