| 5:1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the
Gadarenes.
5:2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the
tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
5:3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not
with chains:
5:4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the
chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces:
neither could any man tame him.
5:5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs,
crying, and cutting himself with stones.
5:6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
5:7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus,
thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
5:8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
5:9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is
Legion: for we are many.
5:10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the
country.
5:11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine
feeding.
5:12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we
may enter into them.
5:13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out,
and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into
the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
5:14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the
country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
5:15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil,
and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were
afraid.

droppings you (and many others) leave.
Soapbox being the sum of participants' writings, it's a real garbage pit.

I wouldn't be too harsh here...
Some people articulate better in person than across the keyboard. I,
for one, am like that. My typing skills leave much to be desired and I
can't type fast/clearly/succinctly enough to get my thoughts across
before they're gone... I realize it's a failing, but there it is...
I therefore stay away from a too detailed synposis of any sort of
argument/discussion in here, simply because the mind is willing, but
the fingers/keystrokes aren't...
I can hold my own verbally/face-to-face, but alas, in here I'm
chopped liver...
I really think you should take things like that into account...
Just my .02 cents worth..

There's nothing to say that length is a determinant of the worth of a
note; wit frequently manifests itself concisely. The notes a person
posts form the basis of a person's electronic persona; we all ought to
keep this in mind when posting. Are we projecting the image we really
want to project? Something to keep in mind.

No, it DOES have to do with CPU and disk and network and time. It is
the "waste" of these things that makes the notes so frustrating. It
is the (apparent) disregard of EVERYTHING but "what i want to say,
where and how i want to say it."
If you want to believe that every reply is equal to every other reply,
fine. We won't get very far. If you believe, as I do, that some replies
shouldn't ever leave the keyboard, then it's up to all of us to find that
line and be reasonable about what we post.

As far as the computer is concerned they are equal. If this notesfile
was archived, then I would see your point. If this was a work related
file on a busy cluster, I would agree wholeheartedly.
Surely you don't think I believe that all replies are the same. All I'm
saying is that not everyone sees things the same way. I have been
noting in soapbox for a little over 2 years and one of the main things
that attracted me to it was the level of wit that's resident as well as
the provoking conversation. A blend exists here that is unusual to say
the least, opposing views constantly clashing etc. I enjoy all of it and
it has given me a chance to meet some wonderful and interesting people
that I never would have met otherwise.
The moderators of this conference do a great job, for this I have no
complaints. People get on their soapbox and gripe about whatever and
argue about whatever, and, heaven forbid laugh about whatever. It's all
fair game isn't it? If it is not, then explain it to me or change the
mission statement of this forum or it's tittle to

John, Doctah, probably others:
You wanna know what *I* (would) think (if I only had a brain)?
I thought not. :^)
In any case...your points are valid; bubblingly, frothingly so. And so, too,
are Glenn's and Mark's. I think that most participants here are as concerned
with their "electronic personae" as you are; perhaps moreso. Personae that,
like their non-electronic counterparts, may have many facets. This is true
from the densest of inorganic 'boxers through to "those who count". And the
facets of a persona are often, like the facets on a gemstone, inseparable
(although `insufferable' is probably the word you'd prefer here ;^). Am I
irreverent or serious? Am I wacky or passionate? Am I clever or dull? Am
I interesting or boring?
I guess that depends upon who you talk to, the day of the week, or even my
caffeine intake. It probably happens that I'm a little of each; EACH an
aspect of my persona.
Those many facets are what manifest themselves here, and especially so due to
the almost "Brownian Motion" style of conversation that goes on in this forum.
One word might set *you* off in this direction, another word might set *me*
off in that direction. Who can predict it? Not I.
But such is the case. Important topics are neglected, even by the 'box
intelligentsia. Frivolous topics abound and thrive, roping in even the most
jaded and cynical curmudgeon. Disk space and bandwidth are consumed in
earnest by un-brief news briefs, NRA propoganda, friends sharing a private
laugh, enemies fighting over minor issues, endless prattling on about OJ's
golf game, who parked where, what wines I drank, my cat, my children, and,
of course, the ubiquitous spelling and grammatical corrections. Many of these
things strike me as being a waste. But they are there, they are part of the
landscape, and given the current population of the 'box, I submit that they
are an *inevitable* part of the landscape. Maybe *you* don't care about my
cat or my bicycle. Maybe *you* don't find my jokes funny. Maybe *you* don't
care what movie I saw last night, or what I thought of it. Maybe Mark and
Glenn do. This happens, face-to-face as well as electronically.
It's one thing to disagree with what I say; it's another thing to disagree
with the very act of my saying it. I think very carefully about *every* word
I post here (spelling not-usually-withstanding). Often, I work very hard on
my notes, deleting them instantly, choosing not to post them even after going
to the trouble of typing them; and I think you have underestimated the degree
to which others do the same. Especially so, given the almost certain fact
that no matter what one says in here, there will be someone who takes issue
with it.
Those many facets. Package deals, sometimes. Like, the way some ethnic
groups wave their hands around when they talk. Still those hands, and they
shut right up.
Different people use this forum for different reasons, but ultimately everyone
stands up and says what they think, on varying issues, to varying degrees, and
with varying levels of competence. To try, even by subtle (or not so subtle)
pressure, to distill the contents of this file could, IMHO, result in a dry
forum peopled by a smug in-crowd.
If that were to happen...well...I'd probably stop bothering.
Just my $0.02, fwiw.
HAVING SAID ALL THAT...I think, too, that ALL of the participants in this
forum could maybe possibly perhaps be just an itsy bitsy teeny weeny little
bit more cognizant of the fact that the mods have to read everything posted
here, and perhaps take that into account when letting their fingers do the
talking.
However, at the end of the day, Soapbox should remain a place where anyone
can stand up and say (just about) any damned stupid thing they want, and
subsequently stand or fall by their wits alone.

Your priest contradicts the Bible. Baptism doesn't seal the believer

no, it wouldn't be my impression that you thought you were

impression that you had given up on the idea of arguing about

Hey Goodwin, bite down hard. You ought to thank Harney, as a matter of
fact we all should, for hosting this conference and for having to go
through crap from time to time (from Digital higher ups) because of
some of the stuff that gets written here. There is a thing called
moderation when one is noting. I enjoy a clever one liner as much as
the next person, but there is such thing as too much. The key is to
find the middle ground.

My sentiments exactly... because of my lactose intolerance, ice cream
is a no-no, but low-fat yogurt is okay (sometimes). You are correct...
there does not seem to be a significant difference in taste between the
two (C.G.)
