436.0. "Only foot traffic allowed on Pennsylvania Ave." by REFINE::KOMAR (The Barbarian) Mon May 22 1995 09:27

So, was this a good idea?

Nope. Some bonehead will figure how to stuff a large bomb under his
jacket and walk right up to the door.:)

Bet the commuters love this move. Traffic in DC has been screwed up
for years, so closing down this main street out to go over like a
Clinton budget. What say our erstwhile DC noters?

    Dan
436.6MKOTS3::JMARTINYou-Had-Forty-Years!!!Mon May 22 1995 11:315
It seems to me it would be better to install some more police officers
in the area...to keep traffic going and check all trucks stopping in
    that immediate stretch.

    -Jack
436.7But hey, it wasn't his idea, so don't blame himAMN1::RALTOIt's a small third world after allMon May 22 1995 11:3117
Considering that the biggest direct threats to the White House
lately have been from an airplane, a "foot traffic" guy with a
gun, and a "foot traffic" guy with a knife, I don't see any
    particular logic in this.

It leaves me with an uneasy, disappointed feeling. After so many
presidents lived on Pennsylvania Avenue through times of war and
cold war, attempted and successful assassinations, impeachments and
resignations, demonstrations and riots, and so on, without feeling
the need to close off the street, it's Bill Clinton who's the
first to barricade (the press's term, not mine) himself in there.

His attempted deflection of the decision-making and responsibility
for this action ("I finally listened to the Secret Service...") is
typically chicken-chit and evasive, by the way.

    Chris

Airplane, smare-plane. If someone is going to get the guy, its going to
be when he lease expects it. And by closing off Penn Ave helps somewhat
of the causes. But, closing will help a Ryder from making a final
stop or visit. Reguardless of who is or is not in power in the White
House. I would hope that things like tour bus's might get exempt from
such stuff. But this is life to be expected when we are dealing with a
world that is more mobile than previous ones.

Violence and crime in 1963 wasn't anything like it is today.

These are appropriate security measures, and have been indicated ever
since we lost 240 marines in a truckbombing in Beirut ten years ago.
The Capitol was protected with massive planters a few years ago. No
similar physical barriers protect the White House- so either barriers
or this sort of cordon is a good preventive measure. The nuts are out
    there.

I see no logic in this move at all. Any psychopath can carry guns,
knifes and whatever weopons in a breifcase, back pack etc..... so why
bother closing off the street. What good is it going to do. They should
have the area swarming with police 24 hours a day, not leave any area
around the house without coverage. Closing the street is not going to
do any good that is for sure.
436.23WAHOO::LEVESQUEluxure et suppliceTue May 23 1995 09:483
It seems like a reasonable precaution to take against individuals of
McVeigh's ilk. It may not be foolproof, but it would tend to dissuade
attempts to use truck bombs, at least at that location.

No one has heard of the 'nuke pack'? Its a US wepon, designed by our
goberment group for the use in Europe. Some GI can actualy walk across
the frontier to the ruskies palace. And nuke the joint till it glows
for ever! Its the size of a breif case, or a lap top bag. And they are
great if you wanna leave the toll machines a token of your
appriciation. Or if you wanna vote your prez out of office. This is a
wepon that can be gotten from some black market place. Soo. Foot
traffic can be just as dangerous as a yellow Ryder truck.:)

The aforementioned "nuke pack" is more officially known as a SADM

according to some ex-KGB types from over there, they weren't tracked

It should be interesting to hear what this guy's motive and
intentions were (with an empty gun), assuming that he ever talks.
What did he think he was going to do? Was he working for someone
else? He was out of a job, so maybe he needed the money. Strange
    timing with the street barricading.

I think this is an act of cowardice and it sends the wrong message
both to the public and those who would terrorize us.
The message to terrorists should be that we will
not be intimidated by your actions, we will not cower behind
    barricaded doors.

    Instead we get this.
