363.0. "Night shift 101" by POLAR::WILSONC () Sun Mar 26 1995 23:47

How do we feel about night shift?

I like it. My girlfriend doesn't. My parents still insist on phoning me
long distance after 2300 hrs, despite telling them monthly for the last
two years that I work on the night shift which means that when they are
asleep I am working and therefore not available. Friends still ask me
where I am going when I get up during the second period to bid my
farewells. So for fun I do the same to them, you know, phone my parents
when I know they are out, ask my friends out to lunch and then act
surprised to see them go after only two beers, "hey, where are you
going its only 1330 hrs what is your PROBLEM, work? you mean you work
during the day? That is like soooo weird. When do you sleep?

What are your thoughts about the night shift?

I like my wife's night shift. She never wears stuff like that in
    public, though...

It is very timely that you mention this. Next week I start on the nightshift
at the CSC in Atlanta. There is going to be a group of us doing this, but if
the day people have a problem they need to contact us. Originally, it was
said that we should be available by telephone in case there is a problem.

I however, was not happy with this. I will be working from 7:00 pm to
9:00 am three days a week. When I get home I plan to put the place on total
telephone silence so I don't get bothered by telephone solictors and their
counterpart. The solution was that we will be given pagers.

Triva question, who did this song?

as you are new to the nightshift, i have a great booklet that discusses
how to adjust your sleep, eating, etc. for the night shift. if you are
interested, let me know and i'll mail you a copy.

re 0. i have been on the night shift for the last 1 years, also known
as the "third-herd," and i am finally getting used to the hours and the
    routine.......breakfast at 1900 (7:00 pm), lunch at 0300, making sure i
shut the ringer off on the phone, curtains sealing off any light from
outside. biggest headache was reminding friends NOT to call me while i
was sleeping. the message got across when i told them that if they
called to "chat" in the afternoon, i'd be calling to "chat" at
    midnight!

advantages: great excuse to sleep all day, can run errands in the
morning while everyone else is at work (especially good at christmas),
drive home in the opposite direction of rush hour traffic, and more
    money.

As a musician, there is only the night shift. The problem is, getting
used to the day shift... my body (and most importantly, my brain)
has little concept of being awake between 6AM and noon. 6AM is a dandy
time to fall into bed, not get out of it. Most of the colossally
stupid things I've managed to do in life have been accomplished between
    6AM and noon.

My first job in the computer field was as a programmer at a silicon
foundry. They once opened a new clean room, and had a lot of equipment
that during the transition period was only used on the night shift.
This required me to join the other vampires, and I can't remember
having more fun on the job in all my years. The exact details are
left to the imagination, but it made college dormitories look
    reserved by comparison.
