| | Tough one. I agree with .1 on Lonely Teardrops. Then again maybe it's
That Is Why by Jackie Wilson. Other than that Whitney Houston crap, the
rest are all excellent. Enjoy every one of them anytime I catch them on
the radio. Two of my favorite albums - Jackie Wilson's Greatest Hits
and Wilson Pickett's Greatest Hits. Would not trade either for a
truckload of Whitney or Barry Manistink.

Some times I wonder why I spend the lonely nights
    Dreaming of a song
    The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
    When our love was new
    And each kiss an inspiration
    But that was long ago
    Now my consolation
Lies in the stardust of a song

Beside a garden wall when stars are bright
    You are in my arms
    The nightingale tells a fairytale
    of paradise where roses bloom
    Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
    My stardust melody
    The memory of love's refrain.

The Devil went down to Georgia,
He was lookin' for a soul to steal.
He was in a bind 'cuz he was way behind,
He was willin' to make a deal.

When he came upon this young boy
Sawin' on the fiddle and playin' it hot,
And the devil jumped up on a hicory stump
and said 'boy, let me tell you what...'

'I guess you didn't know it,
But I'm a fiddle player too,
And if you'd care to take a dare,
I'll make a bet with you.

Now you play pretty good fiddle boy,
But give the devil his due,
I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul
'Cuz I think I'm better than you.'

Well, the boy said 'My name's Jonny,
and it might be a sin,
But I'll take your bet, you're gonna regret,
'Cuz I'm the best there's ever been.'

| | The one album that was my single favorite for the longest
time was Supertramp 'Crime of the Century.' Funny, but Bloody
Well Right was my least favorite song on the album (not that
      I didn't like it though).

But, I much preferred School, Dreamer, Rudy, Hide In Your Shell,
If Everyone Was Listening You Know, Asylum

      Part of Rudy (paraphrase!)

"Rudy's on a train to no where
      Halfway down the line
He doesn't want to get there,
      But he needs time

He needs time, he needs time
He needs time just for living
He needs time, he needs time
For someone just to see him

Its not just because he's fat
No there's more to it than that, etc.

It was also a really fine album so far as sound quality is concerned.
It was the second master recording I know of. Steely Dan Katy Lied
(now THERE'S a good song!) being the first.

I also liked Crisis What Crisis and Even In The Quietest Moments more
than Breakfast In America (which was when they got big).

I liked Crime of The Century longest, but later on, I preferred
throwing on the Dead and hearing especially one side of Europe 72. The
side with Jack Straw, China Cat Sunflower, I Know You Rider - wow
what a side! I also loved Little Feat and especially liked 'Time
Loves A Hero' and 'Fat Man In The Bathtub' off of Waiting for
      Columbus.

Besides those two, it was Neil Young (even though I admit A Man Needs
A Maid is pathetic) and Beatles. But, man the words to Thrasher -
wow! Comes A Time and accoustic side of Rust Never Sleeps are
      beautiful.

But, come to think of it, my all time favorite album is Cat Stevens
'Tea For The Tillerman.' From Where Do The Children Play, to Father
to Son, to Longer Boats, Lisa Lisa, Into White - what a brilliant
      album!!!

I agree with almost everything you said. I could easily live
without the Dead (and, in fact, do), but other than that,
    spot on!

When Supertramp did Rudy live, they used to show a film
that was made with a camera mounted on the front of a train.
It was very cool, especially when it passed another train
    going in the opposite direction...

                        The Thrasher
They were hiding behind hay bales.
They were planting in the full moon.
They had given all they had for something new.
But the light of day was on them.
They could see the thrashers coming.
And the water shown like diamonds in the dew.
And I was just getting up.
Hit the road before it's light.
Trying to catch an hour on the sun.
When I saw those thrashers rolling by
looking more than two lanes wide.
I was feeling like my day had just begun.
  Where the eagle glides descending
  there's an ancient river bending
through the timeless gorge of changes
  where sleeplessness awaits.
  I searched out my companions
who were lost in crystal canyons
when the aimless blade of science slashed the pearly gates.
It was then that I knew I'd had enough.
Burned my credit card for fuel.
Headed out to where the pavement turns to sand.
With a one way ticket to the land of truth
and my suitcase in my hand.
How I lost my friends I still don't understand.
  They had the best selection.
  They were poisoned with protection.
  There was nothing that they needed;
  nothing left to find.
They were lost in rock formations
  or became park bench mutations.
On the sidewalks and in the stations
  they were waiting, waiting...
So I got bored and left them there.
They were just dead weight to me.
Better down the road without that load.
Brings back the time when I was eight or nine.
I was watching my mama's TV.
It was that great Grand Canyon rescue episode.
  Where the vulture glides descending
  on an asphalt highway bending
  through libraries and museums,
  galaxies and stars.
Down the windy halls of friendship
through the roseclip by the bullwhip
  the motel of lost companions
waits with heated pool and bar.
But me I'm not stopping there.
Got my own road left to hoe.
Just another line in the field of time.
When the thrasher comes, I'll be stuck in the sun
  like the dinosaurs in shrines.
But I'll know the time has come to give what's mine.

Assuming you mean Georgia, this song was done by Gladys Knight and the
       Pips.

From their first album. Incredibly underrated group.
Should have been up there with the greats.

It's a shame most of there 11+ albums will never be
          released on CD's.

| | Argh, how did I forget this song:

"Dawn", by the Four Seasons. Has a very interesting structure
for a "pop" song (including a "prelude" of sorts), lots of neat
harmonies, unexpected twists and turns, great lyrics telling a
sad story of class struggle and self sacrifice, interesting
instruments, a unique sound, and still has a beat and is danceable
(that was an important factor in the early 1960's).

A very advanced song for its time, IMHO. If the Beatles hadn't
come along, this would probably be my favorite song (or a close
tie with "Heat Wave"). The Four Seasons were great in their day
("Candy Girl" by them is another musically interesting song...).

I've always liked that tune myself, though it brings back memories of the
appendectomy I had way back when..we were on the way to the hospital when
it came on...

Yup, Dawn was a killer song. Frankie and the Seasons have some great
harmonies. I'm going to have to dig their greates hits tape out
    again.......

| | I could never just pick one song as "best", however one of the best for
me is "Where the Streets Have No Name" by U2. It's a great driving
song - can't help blasting the radio and trying to sing along (even if
I can't make out most of Bono's lyrics) In fact "The Joshua Tree"
album has a few songs that would make my list of favs.
