| I generly do not lift weights. I spend 30 min on the stair master, 30
minutes on the bike, 15 min on the rowing machine. I rarely start off
doing the same thing twice. I will even alternate the actual rowing
with the sit-row.
I have been to a specialist concerning my Epstein Barr and he thinks
its from too much exersizing that I got sick in the first place. I
still think its that little fat gene that is over riding everything I
do.

i have also heard some blurb somewhere that one no longer HAS to
exercise 'intensely' for 30 minutes at a time for a workout to
work...that it is fine to work out for shorter amounts of time, dome
more frequently...
i realize this isn't sounding very coherant...i know what i am trying
to say but it isn't coming out right...like instead of doing a 40
minute aerobic exercise a day, try doing 10 minute 'mini' workouts, 4
times a day...it might even fit better into ones schedule, as sometimes
it is difficult to block out an hour for a workout, but most people can
find 10 minutes to themselves off and on thruout the day...
don't remember where i heard that, but i know i heard it from a couple
of different sources as well...

The only problem I have with mini-work-outs is time. It is easier for
me to set aside an hour ever other day than 10 min here and there. My
trainer says taht at least 20 min before the fat starts to burn.

where benefits are gotten. that leaves you with maybe a 4-6 minute

One factor that hasn't been mentioned here is that your heart
rate remains elevated for a period of time after you stop
working.
So while it's trus that a portion of the workout is lost due
to getting the heart rate elevated, the person who loses three
times that amount of time because he does three short workouts
also benefits from three times the post-workout heart rate
elevation.
|
326.12 | | WMOIS::GIROUARD_C | | Thu Mar 02 1995 07:03 | 6 |
| yes, your heart rate does remain elevated after exercise, but depending
on your level of fitness, your recovery time will vary. if it remains
at a level that is beneficial for any period of time after you
terminate exercising you've got problems...

178? That's very high.... Unless you're aged 20 or under, probably
too high.
To get the highest rate you should go figure
85% * (220 - your age)
anything above this is not recommended for weight loss.
(some would consider it dangerous, unless you're a conditioned athlete)
a more realistic target number is
60% * (220 - age)

reason I mentioned 178 being too high was that he was not successful
loosing weight when working out. It could be cause and effect.
Also he mentioned 178 not as maximum, but the sustained rate during
excercise. While the formula is a generalization it is a good
guideline to begin with. Anything above the anerobic threshold is
not effective for loosing weight, particularly body fat.

Normal resting HR (non-sleeping) is closer to 70 than the 40's (I
believe the average heart rate is 72 or somesuch). Not that the
average HR applies to everyone, just that mid 40's seems closer to dead
than the national average (though sleeping HR drops a bit from the average
above). 8^)

| resting HR at 40's is not dead or close to it. world class runners,
swimmers and cyclists (many) have a resting heart rate lower than
that. it's very common among aerobically fit individuals.
let me define resting HR... it is the rate at which your heart
is beating while asleep/upon awakening (prior to even getting
out of bed). it is not the rate when awake and doing regular
activity...
regarding burning fat... if you exercise at your aerobic threshold
(even with occasional ventures into the anaerobic world) for the
same period of time that you would at 80% of your max HR you'll still
burn more fat. the ratio of effectivity is different. that's all.

on the Nautilus (abdomen and chest). As soon as the weather breaks,
one mile jog. My routine has helped me to deal with my stress level.

100% or at least 90% effort runs with a good sprint at the end (if
you have anything left to give). I just pick a good fast pace that I
think I can live with and go from there. You can't sprint a 6mile run
(at least I can't), but if you can run a marathon, you can probably
push yourself pretty hard and get away with it. Just make sure you're
good and stretched before trying it. slower running gives your muscles
time to stretch and warm up whereas fast pace running will rip tight
muscles.

Glad you got that sorted out. Last year I was doing something
very similar, (running higher that 80% max heart rate). This year
I've slowed down a bit and the fat is finally coming off.
Recently I invested in a Polar heart monitor (about $120). It's the
kind that wraps around your chest, and has a readout on a wrist
device. I've been using it as a "speedometer" for my body, and
have been very pleased by the results. It's made me very conscious
of warm up/ cool down periods as well.

Glad things worked out.
Something useful to try. Vary the intensity of your aerobics
(as measured by your heartrate) over the course of time. For
example,
65% max heart rate for 30 minutes one night
75% "" for 20 minutes another night
80% "" for 15 minutes another
This will let you improve all around. Generally(!) the higher
percentage you'll improve aerobic capacity, the lower the percentage
the greater the percentage of the calories burned are fat.
Keep the body guessing. Also keeps you from getting bored.
I can highly reccomend the book Fit or Fat by Covert Bailey.
It covers this information very well.

there is something in carbos that stimulates the appetite. now, if
you're on a high carbo - low/no exercise program (POP!) the weight
shows up.
since carbos=gycogen is stored in the muscle and is the primary fuel
source for (avg.) 2hrs worth of exercise, and that fuel source is not
depleted regularly, (POP!) carbos=fat!
it's a simple snapshot, but it's basically the limitation of a high
carbo diet.

Bah! To whomever it was that scolded Deb... work on that
humor impairment, and leave nice ladies who enter songs
about penises alone! In fact, next time I rent MP's "The
Meaning Of Life", I'm going to be thinking of you while
I watch the rest of the scene where the penis song
appears.

| Cheer up, Brian. You know what they say.
Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad.
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle,
Don't grumble, give a whistle!
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...
...always look on the bright side of life!
(whistle)
Always look on the bright side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten!
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing,
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps,
Just purse your lips and whistle -- that's the thing!
And... always look on the bright side of life...
(whistle)
Come on!
Always look on the bright side of life...
(whistle)
For life is quite absurd,
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow!
Forget about your sin -- give the audience a grin,
Enjoy it -- it's the last chance anyhow!
So always look on the bright side of death!
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
Life's a piece of <r.o.>,
When you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true,
You'll see it's all a show,
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!
And always look on the bright side of life...
(whistle)
Always look on the bright side of life
(whistle)

| To use that thing Dan posted first type EXTRACT/NOHEADER MONTY_PYTHON.HTML
Then (from a character cell terminal), type LYNX MONTY_PYTHON.HTML
Move the cursor around with the up and down arrow, and then use the
right arrow to follow a link and the left arrow to go back where you
came from.
Or (from MOSAIC or NETSCAPE on a graphics terminal), open file MONTY_PYTHON.HTML
Point and click with the mouse or trackball.
LYNX (or at least my version thereof) doesn't understand "base", so the
search-related links at the top won't work unless you edit the file to
move the base directory into those links.

after taking the last 2 months off I've begun my weight training again.
I started this week with pecs & bi's this morning and I'm already in
excruciating _pain_. I love it :^) tomorrow will be shoulders, traps &
legs. Back and tri's the next day. I like to go 3 days on 1 off. On my
off day I usually run or bike for cardiovascular. I've also changed my
diet to high carbs and protein and keeping my sodiom intake very low.
I would like to be back to the weights I was using over the winter
within 3-4 weeks. BTW. I am a certified fitness instructer thru A.C.E.
so if any of you have questions don't hesitate to ask.
