178.0. "Would You Ride It?!? -- Part II" by POWDML::BUCKLEY (I [heart] Roller Coasters!) Thu Dec 15 1994 11:54

Some of you may remember this note from the last version of SOAPBOX.
This is once again an informal general opinion poll to help me better
understand the "general public" and my dealings in the amusement
    industry.

Last time around, I inquired about ridership on Connecticut's slated
    new-4-96 300' tall. 100mph mountain-side roller coaster. I don't think
one of the 40 or so replies said they would not ride the attraction.
Well, it has just been announced that a NEW coaster will be built in
Las Vegas atop a 1,100' tall tower (similar to the CN Tower in Toronto,
if you know that structure). Actually the coaster will sit at the 900'
level, and will swoop, dive, and drop over 900' above the city streets
    of Las Vegas.

Personally, I don't think many will have the guts to ride this puppy.
So I ask you here -- would you ride it?!?

Happy rails, ....

I guess I didn't realize you were actually after stats, Buck.

I wouldn't have ridden the other one and I won't ride this one, either.

YAWN! I scoff in the face of you rolla costa, they don't scare me.
Whats worring about a rolla costa, your stuck on rails. With all the
health and safty rules arround it just takes all the fun out.

Bungi jumpin' over sharks with a fraid cord is worring or jumpin' out
of a plain with a duff shute is worring, but not rolla coasters.

    >Will it use Stupek's Tower? The one which caught fire last spring? The
    >one which the FAA is trying to have torn down?

Donno the proper name -- I do know it's a brand NEW tower being built
in the city. Originally it was supposed to have been the world's
tallest free-standing structure, but city officials had them
significantly "cut down" the height from the original proposal (FAA had
a problem with the fact it would have caused them to re-route all of
their air traffic). There will also be a Restaraunt and Casino at
about the 800' level, but can't say if this is one and the same (Stupek
    Tower) as mentioned above?!?

No roller coasters for me.

I was at (the now long-gone) revere-beach amusement park when a guy took
a dive off the top of the roller coaster. hit a cement sidewalk not far from
me. (ever see a watermelon hit by a high-velocity slug? :-})

Some say he stood up, and/or delibrately tried to swan-dive, others said
the thing was too rickety. whatever! I don't like height or coasters.

I get dragged onto these things by kids, over and over. Since I
close my eyes and hold on tight, just like in airplanes, I get
more nauseous than scared, and since they aren't looking, I preserve
    the old image.

But given my druthers, I prefer a Carousel.

where I find my balls stuck half way up my ass after a long drop.

As a new Sydneysider, you may not be aware that Luna Park, Milsons Point
re-opens early next year. It used to be "the" amusement park in the
pre Wonderland & Darling Harbour era.
(I never understood how people could get ill just on the Rotor)

As someone who maintains a _Worldwide_ database on all existing roller
coasters, I'm already clued in on the new double loop steel coaster
currently being built at Luna Park. Too bad the locals are bitching
about the "noise" issue, and that the ride blocks the rich people's
view of the harbour. They should move imvho.

Here is a sampling of coasters in your region, mate -- enjoy!

    Hey Australia dude/dudette:

Just announced -- new steel coaster for Movie World in Queensland.
I knew they were getting one (per post in .30), but didn't have
specifics. It's gonna be a real screamer -- themed after the
LETHAL WEAPON movie. A must ride...make plans early!!
