The Sudbury Savoyards have been performing Gilbert and Sullivan shows in
Sudbury, Massachusetts since 1961. Originally a fund-raising activity of
the Sudbury United Methodist Church, the group gradually evolved an identity
and members of its own. Today the group still enjoys the considerable
benefits of affiliation with the church but is a separate organization,
donating all proceeds to the relief of world hunger.

Key points that make the Sudbury Savoyards unique:

- Gilbert and Sullivan only.
- One production per year, typically in March.
- Large scale of production: 900-seat auditorium at Lincoln-
Sudbury Regional High School, full sets, lights, costumes,
orchestra. Our productions often put as many as 65 people
on the stage and 30 in the orchestra pit.
- No audition required for chorus.
- An attitude that, in community theater, the "community" part
and the "theater" part are equally important.
- All proceeds are donated to the relief of world hunger.

"The Mikado" will be the thirty-fourth Gilbert and Sullivan production presented
by the Sudbury Savoyards since 1961.

137.4COVERT::COVERTJohn R. CovertSat Dec 03 1994 20:595
Gilbert and Sullivan fans are known as "Savoyards" because the majority
of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operas were first performed at the Savoy
Theatre in London.

     Well...

I figured I'd better enter a review here before anyone else did and
try to dispell any vicious rumors that people may start...

First of all, the play was very, very good. Started on time, very well
acted, produced, and directed... The cast was outstanding except for
some whose voices could have been a bit louder...

      A solid "A" production...

      Now... to dispell any rumors...

Sometimes people need to rest their eyes and are not necessarily
asleep during the performance... Even if some of them (RAH in
particular) wave their hands in front of certain individuals to see if
    they're indeed asleep...

and.... so what if , during the final bow and applause a certain
individual yelled out "Hoo!! Hoo!! Hoo!!!" as if at a football or
basketball game... Maybe he was caught up in all the enthusiasm!!

The gum he picked up off the floor was still wrapped and not, I
repeat... NOT ABC gum!!! It was his first piece of gum since his braces
    were removed anyway.. so there!!!
137.63MPGS::MARKEYThe Completion Backwards PrincipleSun Mar 26 1995 22:3198
    And now for a review...

Perhaps Gilbert and Sullivan's greatest send-up of the English
Monarchy, The Mikado is both a hilarious and well-crafted
piece of late 19th Century lyric opera.

The Sudbury Savoyards presentation featured both impeccable
casting and an extraordinary eye for detail. In particular,
the chorus, who in lesser productions are often little more
than window dressing, here brought forth fully-wraught
characterizations, through well-chosen costumes and finely
    tuned choreography.

The production was staged at the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional
High School Auditorium, a reasonably sized venue with
decent acoustics and comfortable seating. However, a
touch of sound reinforcement was still in order, since
voices tended to be lost as they moved from one side of
    the stage to the other.

Other than this minor failing things went very well.
Transitions in lighting and the movement of actors
to and from the stage were tight. The myriad time
signature and tempo changes of the Mikado were deftly
handled by conductor David Larrick and his thirty
piece orchestra. There were many fine musical
moments in this production, but special mention
of the quartets and trios in the second act
    is in order.

As for the cast, The Mikado of Japan was played by
Walt Howe. Mr. Howe played the character with the
right mix of humor and authority, although his
voice lacked the booming resonance one hopes to
    see in the title character.

Nanki-Poo was played to perfection by Bill Kuhlman,
who in both appearance and character suggests the
    requisite boyish qualities.

Ko-Ko, The Lord High Executioner, was played by
Stephen Hird, who did an admirable job with a
tough part. At times, it was very difficult to
hear Mr. Hird, although it is not clear whether
this was due to a lack of adequate sound
reinforcement or a deficit in Mr. Hird's voice.

Pooh-Bah, the pompous Lord High Everything Else,
soliloquizes in the opening act: "I am, in point
of fact, a particularly haughty and exclusive
person, of pre-Adamite ancestral descent. You will
understand this when I tell you that I can trace
my ancestry back to a protoplasmal primordial
atomic globule. Consequently, my family pride
is something inconceivable. I can't help it. I
was born sneering." The difficulty is playing
Pooh-Bah is that the character is so extraordinarily
silly and over-wraught, that it requires at
once both abandon and restraint. Dennis O'Brien
understands this tightrope, perhaps better than
many who have made a career from this illustrious
character. His performance was truly a marvel.

Pish-Tush was played by Paul Lemieux Jr. who
added to the character's normal swagger a touch
of feminine aristocracy, suggesting a French
Courtier in Kimono drag. This was a particularly
nice spin on this character as it was apparent
from the libretto that Gilbert had such a reading
    in mind.

Yum-Yum, the love interest of both Ko-Ko and
Nanki-Poo was played by the lovely Mary Whallon.
Here again, the casting was delightful, in
that Ms. Whallon possesses both the beauty and
the voice required by the part.

Of course, when one speaks of loveliness and talent
they need look no further than our own Mz. Deb,
who played the part of Pitti-Sing, one of the sister-
Wards of Ko-Ko. With Peep-Bo (Christine Larsen),
Mz. Deb and Ms. Whallon evoked the giddiness
    inherent in the three sisters.

And speaking of well-cast, there was Paula Moravek
as the frightening Katisha, daughter-in-law elect
of the Mikado. Despite a weak start vocally, Paula
Moravek was perfect, extolling the virtues of
her left shoulder blade, with a keen understanding
that perhaps that was where virtue ends.

Last but now least, our dear Mr. Covert did a fine
job in the chorus, although judging from the opening
scene, there is relatively little danger of him
running off from Mother Digital for a career in
    soccer.

Thanks to everyone who came to the show, allowing us to have almost $17,500
in ticket receipts, not quite DOUBLE the average for the previous three years.

Easy. Come to next year's production, where I'll probably be some other
kind of lowly creature.
