128.0. ""Hiding behind the badge"" by NASAU::GUILLERMO (But the world still goes round and round) Thu Dec 01 1994 11:52

Bit of flap going on in this region about the police investigating themselves
when involved in auto accidents and apparently finding an inordinate amount
of innocence on their part.

Local news (WBZ-4, NBC affiliate) is presenting results of a six month
investigation into the Accident Reconstruction Team - a state police
outfit. 82 accidents were examined and none of the officers were found
at fault. All accidents (I believe) were serious: fatalities and lifelong
crippling involved.

As a result of the series last night the Public Safety official and the
governor have promised to conduct objective investigation.

Probably just another overblown media hype.

Not media hype. An extremely intoxicated Statie rear ended me 10 years
ago. He was driving an uninsured, unregistered car. I got a ticket in

Well, they did list several cases. With one person in particular this
one trooper had 8 accidents with people. When the report was coming together,
they first moved the guy to Registry duty, and then to another job all together.
Plus, in 82 cases, how can all of them not have the police at fault?

The TV station did an expose of the MA state police accident
investigation unit, which is responsible for investigating auto
    accidents and assessing blame.

In investigating accidents over the last few years involving state and
local police, the unit has found the cops not at fault in all 82 cases!

If they knew where you were coming from they either would have begged

Furthermore, they'd have probably disciplined the trooper sufficiently

They aren't supposed to "win." They're supposed to be treated like the
rest of us: when they break the law they should be punished. They
shouldn't have their crimes whitewashed. Why should their victims be
denied justice because the pers happened to be the cops? I suppose

It'll be 6 years ago next Memorial Day that a friend of mine was
driving on a road in Bowie, speed limit was posted at 35MPH at that
point, when he was broadsided and killed by a PG county police cruiser
doing in "excess of 60MPH". Witnesses said that the policeman
confessed at the scene that he was in a hurry to get home for personal
reasons, but the "Official PG County Police Investigation" said that
the cruiser was "on a silent [no lights or siren] call "when the
    unfortunate accident occurred."

The family lost a dear husband and father and we loved a great friend.
They're suing the officer and PG County for wrongful death. To add
insult to injury, PG County refused to reimburse the family for the
cost of the vehicle and their auto insurance company didn't pay out
    either.

The details on that are truly enough to make one's blood boil.

If there was ever a reason to bring in a good bloodthirsty scumbag attorney

Is the issue still unsettled, or have they given up?

Actually, it was a Mr. Donut.

Jack, my defense was indisputable. My brother was with me and was a
witness but just the fact he was driving illegally made him guilty!
They were simply conspiring to cover mad dogs arse.

Believe it or not, my first trip to court was the magistrates office.
He was part of the conspiracy and made the trip useless. He sided with
mad dog. I appealed and actually went to court. The judge ruled in my
    favor immediately.

| Actually, it was a Mr. Donut.

WAIT A MINUTE!!!! Let's look at the facts Jack has stated.

1) He was between the cop and Dunkin Donuts after he was rear ended.

This to me says that Dunkin Donuts was the place between him and the
	cop.

2) Almost went into a river.

Now it seems that a river has magically appeared between him and Dunkin
Donuts. How did this river appear? Had you been watching a Bewitched
	marathon before you drove?

3) It was NOT a Dunkin Donuts, but actually a Mr. Donut.

This to me says the story has now changed again.

Jack Martin, how you were able to get off the charges with an ever
changing fantasy story like this is beyond me! You should have been found
guilty! You should have gotten the chair, or at least some stale donuts.

| Jack, my defense was indisputable. My brother was with me and was a witness
| but just the fact he was driving illegally made him guilty!

Gee, you had a witness in the car, and all these different versions? I
hope you had only one version for the cops!

| Believe it or not, my first trip to court was the magistrates office. He was
| part of the conspiracy and made the trip useless.

Which conspiracy, mad dogs or yours?

| He sided with mad dog.

With rivers magically appearing, donut shops changing chains, all in
the time it took the cop to hit you, no wonder why he sided with mad dog!
You're lucky he didn't give you a new white suit jacket to wear!

| I appealed and actually went to court. The judge ruled in my favor immediately

Oh... you pleaded insanity I see. And you told him you worked for
Digital, which solidified your claims. Much easier defense than trying to
explain your other story.

| Two wasted trips to Plymouth from western Massachusetts.

Next time get your story straight the FIRST time!

never seen moats around donut shops. why would they put an obstacle in
the way of the biggest customers?

and as an aside, which struck me as funny, they did some construction
on the road outside the hudson plant. they were laying in pipes, so the street
was blocked off. they had a cop sitting in his car in the morning making sure
people would slow down and take the detour. a friend of mine said when he drove
by, the cop who was in his car was sleeping, and had white stuff around his
mouth. either he was eatin coke, or he had a donut and fell asleep. :-) (true
