If the user installs the Oracle client software then orauser.com should
end up getting put down (client software I think will include SQL*plus
and SQL*net

If there are no libraries then no link will happen.

I think so, but make the and/or above an and.

This didn't work. Customer installed sql*net and sqlplus from an
oracle 7.1.5 system. Also did:
sqlplus user/pass@node
and this worked fine.
Now installed rtg/oracle v7 and it fails linking the image. Says he
nees oracle7 installed on his system. I told him he didn't need it, just
the oracle client software. He wants to know what is the oracle client
sw called? If he doesn't hear from me in the next couple of hours,
they are planning to install oracle7 on the system.
In the install guide, pg5-1, it mentions that you need oracle rdbms but
doesn't say it needs to be on the client system. Also makes no mention
of oracle client software.
Thanks, Diane

1160.3 | If no orauser then it needs to be worked through Oracle support | BROKE::ABUGOV | | Wed Apr 30 1997 11:44 | 15 |

Hi Diane,
So the ORAUSER.COM didn't end up on the system? If it did and they got
a link error could you post the error? We seem to often get hit by the
habit of Oracle changing the location of the Oracle libraries we link
against.
If there are libraries that can't be found in their regular location it
might help if the user searches the Oracle directory structure (same if
the orauser.com didn't end up where expected.
Thanks,
Dan

1160.4 | sending linked images | BROKE::BITHER | | Wed Apr 30 1997 13:58 | 67 |
| Hi Dan,
There was no problem with orauser.com. The installation procedure asks
for the location of this file and they entered the location of the file and
the install proceeded. The problem occurred when the ldrv* image was
being linked. It said they needed oracle on their system. They are faxing
me a copy of the error message sometime this afternoon. I'll post as
a reply after receiving.
QUESTIONS:
1. What is the name of the Oracle client software that rtg/oracle users
are supposed to install? I have 2 customers asking me now. No one has
heard of it. Or do we mean, install sql*net and sqlplus?
2. Customer referred to in base note decided to install Oracle rdbms
yesterday and now gateway works. However, this was a development system.
They want to install the gateway on their production system in another week.
They are not happy with the workaround which was to install Oracle RDBMS and
would like to know what else they need to install besides sql*net and
sqlplus. I know this is an unfair question until I'm able to post the
link error message but just indicating that we need to know what is
meant by installing Oracle client software.
3. Today I found the following STARS article. This appears to indicate
that all that is needed is sql*net and that we will send linked images.
Do we have engineering's blessing on this or should we tell customers
to install sql*net AND sqlplus as indicated in 1160.1 and/or the oracle
client software and remove this article (or make it noncustomer-viewable).
If the article is correct, then it would seem that this entire note
1160 is moot. Just install sql*net and if it doesn't work we'll send
an image.
Thanks, Diane

TITLE: Installing Rdb Gateway for Oracle on a Node with Only SQL*Net Installed
PRODUCT: Oracle Rdb V6.1
OP/SYS: OpenVMS VAX V5.5 and higher
SOURCE: Oracle Worldwide Customer Support
SYMPTOM:
You have a node that you wish to install the Oracle Gateway on. This node
does not have Oracle7, nor SQL*Plus installed, but you do have SQL*Net
installed. The installation of the Rdb Transparent Gateway for Oracle
failes trying to find the LDRV$ORACLE_SHR.EXE file in the VMS Install
"working directory".
RESPONSE:
This has been reported to engineering.
WORKAROUND:
Install the Database Integrator first. If you are installing V7.0 of the
Gateway, then choose option 3 off the installation menu instead of option 6.
Choose NO for the question regarding using an Oracle Catalog manager.
When that installation completes, you have all the files needed for the Oracle
Gateway except for LDRV$ORACLE_SHR.EXE. Call your support representative and
this file will be sent to you. Place this file in SYS$LIBRARY: and the Rdb
Transparent Gateway for Oracle will function properly.

| Hi Dan,
Here is their log file of the installation. I found note 1117 which
referred to a problem linking using rtg/gtwy 3.1A and Oracle 7.1.5 but
it was fixed in v7. The current customer is using 7.1.5 and rtg/oracle v7.
Thanks, Diane

1160.6 | Look like a bug... | BROKE::ABUGOV | | Wed Apr 30 1997 19:05 | 38 |

Hi Diane,
I believe only SQL*net is needed, but as you know we've had trouble
understanding what exactly a customer gets with SQL*net license (not
only do file locations change but the contents of the kit changes too).
I looked at the error message and it comes at this section of our
installation procedure:
From file LDRV$ORACLE_LINK_V7.COM:
$ ! GET ORACLE VERSION NUMBER
$ !
$ @ora_install:ora_prdctl VERSION RDBMS CURRENT
$ ver = f$extract(0,1,rdbmsver$$)
$ if ((ver .eqs. "") .or. (ver .eqs. "6"))
$ then
$ write sys$output -
"You must have Oracle V7 or above to install the gateway for Oracle"
$ goto EXIT
$ endif
$ !
$ if (ver .eqs. "7") then ver = "V7"
$ if (ver .eqs. "8")
$ then
$ write sys$output "This product has not been tested with Oracle V8"
$ write sys$output "You may get unpredictable results"
$ ver = "V8"
$ endif
You might want to suggest they edit this part out and put ver = "V7"
in the code, then file a bug report. It could be that we are checking
for a value wrong in the installation procedure.
Sorry for the problems,
Dan

| Hi Dan,
Thanks. I'll tell them to try editing this file. Since this comes
before the actual link part, I suspect they will still have problems
linking (see 1160.4 article). So my plan of action is to tell them
the following. Can you give me your feedback?
Production system:
-----------------
1. Install SQL*Net
2. Modify ldrv$oracle_link_v7.com as noted in .6
3. If still not working, continue:
4. Install Distributed Option and not rtg/oracle
5. Copy linked image from development system to production system
(Unless a different platform. If a different platform, call us and we'll
send a specially linked image.)
6. If still not working, continue:
7. Install SQLPLUS and do sqlplus u/p@node
8. If still not working, continue:
9. Install Oracle7
Thanks, Diane

Hi Diane.
Are no files being left on their system when the gateway link fails?
If only the link fails and they still get all their files then you can
just copy the image I hope. Installing the distributed option only
won't get them the startup and shutdown command procedures for the
oracle gateway (i'm not sure what else might be missing). Also,
installing the distributed option will get them catalog manager files
which they don't need. ...and if they do, don't have them choose the
oracle catalog manager or the same problem will hold true.

1160.11 | Can't really tell | BROKE::BITHER | | Wed May 07 1997 10:46 | 15 |
| Hi Dan,
The ldrv_msg.exe file was missing after the rtg/oracle installation but the
lora$startup and shutdown files were there. We thought possibly these
startup/shutdown files were left over from the 3.1 install. Regardless of
which kit they came from (3.1 or 7.0) the only differences between 3.1 and 7.0
are the removed references to "DEC" so the files work the same way.
So I can't really answer the question "were any files left after the
installation" but they seem to have all the necessary files - except
that it doesn't work! :)
Bug 489585.
Thanks, Diane
