1115.0. "Another stored procedure one." by chsr38.ch.oracle.com::ROHR (Oracle Rdb support Switzerland) Wed Jan 22 1997 06:35

I have read several notes about stored procedures. I have come to these
    conclusions and questions:

Customer has transparent gateway Rdb - Rdb.

He cannot use stored procedures in the remote Rdb database.

    		Right or wrong?

In order to use any stored procedures, he has to use a 'local' stored
procedure and that only works with the DO?

    		Right or wrong?

And even with DO you cannot use the stored procedures in the underlying
Rdb database? Or has this restriction been lifted?

Are there any plans to support calls to the stored procedures in the
remote database for the transparent gateway?

Does by any chance someone know the transparent gateway O7-O7 and
O7-Rdb? It seems that at least O7-O7 does support access to the stored
procedures of the underlying database. Customer wants to know if O7-Rdb
does the same, butI have noone around here to ask...

    thanks for clearing this up.

1115.1Can't invoke native stored procedures with DBIBROKE::ABUGOVWed Jan 22 1997 09:0429

    Hi Regina,

There is no Rdb gateway to Rdb - the customer would just access the Rdb
    database natively.

If you use the distributed option, then the stored procedure needs to
be stored in the DBI database, and won't be invoked natively in the Rdb
    database.

    >>Are there any plans to support calls to the stored procedures in the
    >>remote database for the transparent gateway?

We'd like to, but my gut feel is that this won't be in the V8 product.

There is no O7-O7 gateway - again, it is just a native mode connection.
I believe (but I;m not sure) that the latest versions of the Oracle
gateways will invoke native stored procedures in the underlying DBMS
(including Rdb), but I don't know that for sure.

    Hope this helps,

    Dan
1115.2Not yet finished...chsr38.ch.oracle.com::ROHROracle Rdb support SwitzerlandWed Jan 22 1997 09:2215
    Hi Dan,

thanks. One more question. Stored procedures can only be executed on
the database they are store in (Read somewhere in the Rdb doc).

Now how could you use a stored procedure which is stored in a DBI
database on an underlying DB? When reading page 13-8 in the 3.1A
product family user's guide it seems that this is not true for DO ("A
dstored procedure may reference any DBI object that resides in the DBI
logical database in which that stored procedure is defined"). An object
can be a remote table, right?

    Thanks,
    Regina

1115.3linked tables can be used...BROKE::ABUGOVWed Jan 22 1997 13:179

    Hi Regina,

Yes, any table you see in the dbi database can be referenced using a
    stored procedure.

1115.4What can I do to have stored procedures in underlying db?chsr38.ch.oracle.com::ROHRThe Packers did it!Thu Mar 06 1997 04:5911

Would a bug help accelerate the decision to have the possibility to
call stored procedures in underlying databases? Or is there a DO V8 QAR
    system?

    /Thanks,
    Regina

Regina,
I'm afraid the answer is no. Base development introduced the ability
to call stored procedures from a transparent gateway starting with the
transparent gateway 4.0 kernel. Although we have ported 4.0
internally, we are not planning a 4.0-based TG4RDB release until we
receive a version of the transparent gateway toolkit that is built on
R7.3 (the current 4.0 kernel is built on 7.2).

For more information about where we stand regarding TG4RDB and TG4RMS,
please see the current OpenVMS Product Line Update on the Corp Repository
(under the "Digital" InfoKit).
.

    Hi Regina,

This is on our wishlist for V8 already. I'm not sure a TAR/QAR will
    help at this point.

    Thanks,

    Hi Regina,

There are no dates at this time for V8 of the product formerly known as
DBI (tPSFKaD). In any case I sincerely doubt heterogeneous stored
    procedures will be in there.

    Thanks,
