1112.0. "product DAI???" by M5::PSOEHL (They mostly come out at night. Mostly.) Thu Jan 09 1997 19:27

customer just installed dbi. registered the license that he got from
    us. He does a
    $ lice list dbi-int
and it seems valid and loaded.

He goes into Bookreader tries to open the doc set (the dbi
handbook and the dbi users guide) and gets the following message.

    Error opening book.
    Title: DB Integrator's User's Guide
    File: DISK:[DIRECTORY]DBI_USERS_GUIDE.DECW$BOOK;1
Reason: Accessing this book require a license for product DAI from
    producer DEC.

    Huh????

I tried the same thing on one of my nodes here at COS, and get the same
garbage. Colleague suggests I dump the file and see if there's a
string DAI somewhere up front. Bingo. I patch it to say
    DBI-INT and now it works.

Ok, so what did I miss?

Did Mr. Customer get the wrong bookreader CD, is there a pak that he's
supposed to have that he doesn't?

    TIA

1112.1Work-roundsvrav1.au.oracle.com::MBRADLEYI was dropped on my head as a baby. What's your excuse?Thu Jan 09 1997 22:216
As an work round you could try installing the book-browser PAk which should
still be on Digitals documentation CD. This will let you read anything.

G'day,

Mark.
1112.2Bit more info on the workaround & causeBROKE::BITHERFri Jan 10 1997 09:3061
Hi Pat. Mark's right. Here's a bit more information on the
workaround. I had written this up as a STARS article and thought it
might help here.

TITLE: Bookbrowser Documentation Inaccessible With Valid DBI License

PRODUCT: Distributed Option

OP/SYS: OpenVMS VAX, OpenVMS AXP

SOURCE: Oracle Worldwide Customer Support

PROBLEM:

The following error occurs when accessing Distribution Option documentation
off a DEC CDROM distribution disk:

...accessing this book requires a license for product DBI from
      producer DEC."

A valid DBI-INT license is installed on the system.

SOLUTION:

Book reader documents check for a book browser license. If one is not
available, then individual product license checking is done.
To avoid product license checking install the bookreader license:

  1. Go to the top level directory in DEC Windows
  2. Look for the subdirectory called DECW$BOOK
  3. Execute the command file called DECW$BOOKBROWSER.COM. This
file may also be called BOOKBROWSER.COM. This command file is
architecture-specific. There are two separate files with the same
name that run on the two separate platforms and load the
architecture-specific license. Be sure you have the correct command
      file for your machine.

This command file installs a book browser license. This license is free and
anyone who obtains a CDROM from DEC is allowed to run the procedure and install
the license.

After installing the book browser license, all book reader documents will be
accessible whether a valid product license is installed or not. If the
bookbrowser command file cannot be found, or if there is still a problem
accessing the bookreader documentation after executing the command producedure,
please call the Digital hotline support number, 1-800-354-9000, and ask for
bookreader support.

ANALYSIS:

Bookreader is not checking for a DBI-INT license even though this is a
valid product license.
\One possible theory is that it only looks for the DBI-DEV license which is not
\available anymore but used to be available when the product was still owned by
\Digital.

I knew one of the OraNH (Oracle in New Hampster) guys would know.
In fact, I tried to call you guys last night, but I guess you were
roasting chestnuts by an open fire. 8*)

    Thanks.

By the way, it wasn't looking for dbi, it was looking for DAI!!!

1112.5dai - that is a weird oneBROKE::BITHERFri Jan 10 1997 15:2822
Hi Pat,

>>> By the way, it wasn't looking for dbi, it was looking for DAI!!!

Guess if it's going to look for a product license called DAI, having a DBI
license won't do much good! I've talked to at least two customers who've had
this problem but was never told "dai." This could indicate that quite possibly
it never worked when we gave out dbi-dev licenses either. However, I never got
any calls on this until after dbi-dev licenses went away.

Anyway, since we're not part of Digital anymore, we can't check into
the bookreader code, or change it. Were they able to install the bookreader
license ok? When I talked to bookreader support after receiving the
first call, they recommended always doing this. DBI wasn't the only
product they'd seen that had a license problem with bookreader. Apparently
it is a bit common. Installing the bookreader license means never
running into this problem again for any product, nevermind the benefit of
reading about products you don't even have installed should you be so
inclined!

Thanks, Diane (who's never had a chestnut)

What worked? I don't know. I was getting ready to call the customer
and found that another analyst had taken over the call and sent them
    the bookreader instructions.

    Anyway, thanks again.

    Pat,
who's never roasted chestnuts on any fire, open or otherwise; but
doesn't it just sound kind of groovy-Tuesday?
