1102.0. "VSAM and DB2 on IBM9000 ?" by ORAREP::NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Erez Braun) Thu Nov 07 1996 11:36

  Can I have the data distributor replicate my data from VSAM and ISAM data
sources into a DB2 database, and all datasources will run on an IBM9000
machine (MVS) ?

  If data distributor can't do it, Is there any other tool that can make the
job?

Thanks in advance,
Erez

(The above was posted in the data distributer notes file as well)

1102.1What Data Distributor doesBROKE::PROTEAUJean-Claude ProteauThu Nov 07 1996 15:5525

    Replicate has a special meaning in Data Distributor (now called the
    Replication Option for Rdb). There are two methods of transferring
    data (two major methods): extraction and replication. Extraction is
    what others might call full refresh, and replication is differential
    refresh.

    Replication Option (that is, Data Distributor) can perform extraction
    transfers from a wide variety of data sources. So long as there's a
    supported Rdb Transparent Gateway to get at the source data,
    Replication Option can use it to extract data.

    The differential (aka incremental) refresh method is only supported for
    Rdb source databases.

    If the extrction method of data transfer is acceptable, then the next
    issue is support of transfer from VSAM and ISAM sources. There is a
    version of one the gateays that supports access to VSAM and ISAM data.
    It will shortly be replaced by a newer verison of the Gateway that has
    VSAM (I'm not certain about ISAM) support removed or at least commented
    out of the code. The reason is that up until now, we have not gotten
    the level of customer interest to warrant continuing development
    efforts on this. If you have a prospective customer who can make it
    worth our while to reconsider, I suggest you get in touch with our
    group manager, Steve Serra, and discuss this further.

Claude, was the access to VSAM and other MVS files not done by plugging
Digital's DTF tool under our RMS gateway ?

1102.3Yes, DTFBROKE::PROTEAUJean-Claude ProteauMon Nov 11 1996 09:124

    Albert,

    Yes, I was told that DTF was used.
1102.4Only DTF (no longer RMS gateway)...BROKE::ABUGOVMon Nov 11 1996 15:1910

    Hi,

    For the next version of the RMS gateway (V7.0, currently in FT) we will
    no longer support VSAM as a data source for non-relational access. You
    can still use DTF to move VSAM data around.

    Thanks,

    Dan
