1083.0. "Read/write access to an SQL server WNT from RDB" by ORAREP::EVOCDG::EL_YOUSSEFI (ABDELHAKIM EL-YOUSSEFI @EVO) Fri Jul 26 1996 08:10

Hello,

I am working on a big migration project from VAX VMS to Alpha Windows NT.
To ensure the exploitation continuity while redeveloping the application,
we have to thought of the following:

Situation
The application being used are developed with
Vax COBOL, Dec Forms and RDB 6.0 under OpenVMS/VAX

Target situation
Dec COCOL ,Dec forms, and RDB 6.0 under OpenVMS/Alpha.

The customer would like to have a unique database for the old and new
applications. This new database is going to be managed with SQL server 6.0
under Windows NT. (No RDB 6.0 database under OpenVMS Alpha)

Questions:

Does the DBI solution fit or answer this requirement, without modifying the
existing applications?

What would be the products to add to Open VMS Alpha and Windows NT?

Any answers or ideas to help solving this problem are highly appreciated.

Thanks everybody.

1083.1PC Data to startBROKE::SERRAYou got it, we JOIN it....DBIFri Jul 26 1996 09:1515
Does the customer have a current Oracle Rdb support license. If so
they would use th Rdb Distributed Option in conjunction with the Rdb
    Transparent Gateway to PC Data.

If they do not have a valid license , they would use DataBase
Integrator in conjunction with Rdb Transparent Gateway to PC Data.
The PC Data Gateway get you do SQL Server.

The application will work unless some Rdb features are used that either
the gwy does not support, like BLOBS...

    thanks

1083.2RDB not necessary ?ORAREP::EVOCDG::EL_YOUSSEFIABDELHAKIM EL-YOUSSEFI @EVOFri Jul 26 1996 11:4917
Thank you for your quick response.

    Another questions ?

    1. in second solution, The RDB is necessary

    2. Are this following products sufficent:

    - DEC DB Integrator Gateway for PC DATA
    - DEC SQL developpement license ( Recompile Dec Cobols applications)

    For OpenVMS/ALPHA ?

    3. The customer's Applications not use BLOBS, it is the only restiction?

    Thanks

Rdb is necessary but an Oracle support license gives you the Rdb
Distributed Technology Suite free. If you do not have a current Oracle
support license you have 2 choices:
1 - the right one, GET an Oracle Rdb support license and the
                get free options
2 - buy DataBase Integrator, you still need Oracle or Rdb as a
               catalog.

If you want to have a single view of your rdb and sql server data, then
you will need the Rdb Distributed Option/DataBase Integrator to
    integrate the 2 data sources.

    thanks

i just mean that if your customer is running v6 of rdb and has not
renewed their customer support contract. They need to be current,
    licensed for support.

    thanks
