ORACLE ACQUIRES DIGITAL'S DATABASE INTEGRATOR PRODUCTS
Agreement Follows Rdb Acquisition From Digital In December 1994
REDWOOD SHORES, California (April 4, 1996) --- Oracle
Corporation today announced the acquisition of Digital's DB Integrator (DBI)
product family from Digital Equipment Corporation. The product family includes
Digital's DB Integrator, Digital's Data Distributor, and Digital's DB
Integrator Gateways. The cash transaction for an undisclosed amount will
include the transfer of the products, and associated engineering and support
resources to Oracle's New England Development Center in Nashua, New Hampshire,
established in December 1994 when Oracle purchased the Rdb product business
from Digital. Engineering, Support and Products Become Part of Oracle
The DBI Products are a software family that provides distributed database,
database replication, and query parallelism to applications on Digital
platforms using the Rdb SQL language and the Rdb ODBC interface. They also
include transparent access to dozens of database management systems directly
and in cooperation with third-party middleware products. Replication, Query
Parallelism, Distributed Database and Shared Data with Oracle7
"While there are companies using DBI independently of Rdb, Oracle Rdb
customers are the primary users of these products," notes Jim Steiner, senior
director of marketing for Oracle's New England Development Center. "The
addition of replication, parallel query and distributed database capabilities
to Rdb will be a major benefit to our customers who can now meet the growing
demands facing heterogeneous enterprise environments. These products support
database customers who want the high-availability, enterprise features in our
new Rdb7 release."
The gateway technology in DBI allows Rdb applications to share data with
Oracle7 databases. It allows applications that support Rdb, both server- and
client/server-based, to run against both Rdb and Oracle7.
"Rdb customers, through Oracle's Rdb Customer Advisory Council, have been
asking about DBI product family support for quite awhile," says Barry Wallis,
technical architecture manager for PacifiCare Health Systems. "The transition
of these products from Digital to Oracle makes perfect sense for both companies
and it's especially beneficial to the Rdb installed base. Now there will be a
continued tight integration between the DBI products and new versions of Rdb."
Acquisition Complements Oracle's Rdb7 Strategy
"As we continue to enhance Rdb, we are adding many new features with the
enterprise market in mind. We are also enhancing Rdb and bringing greater
value to customers by making the information management technologies Oracle
offers available to the Rdb user," said Charles Rozwat, vice president of
development for Oracle's New England Development Center. "The addition of the
DBI products strengthens our ability to bring the same client/server
development, management, data access, and application enabling technologies
available on both Rdb and Oracle servers wherever possible."
Availability
The DBI products will continue to be available from Digital for a limited time,
and are planned for availability directly from Oracle by the end of April
1996.
Oracle is the leading supplier of database technologies on Digital systems.
Rdb7 is the most widely used database system on Digital OpenVMS platforms and

| RE: .3
******Who will be responsible for the DBI Gateway for DSM ?
TBD. Since we did not physically owned the gateway code, it was not
moved to Oracle. There will be a meeting shortly to confirm product
offering. The ideal solution is that we, Oracle, ship the Custom
Drivers product to the customer and the DSM gateway modules, which are
part of DSM, would be licensed thru Intersystems.
As soon as the issue is settled , we will post the terms.
thanks
