876.0. "Printing business cards" by BUSY::SLAB (Afterbirth of a Nation) Mon Apr 21 1997 12:55

I was in CVS the other day and they had blank "sheets" of 10 cards
that claimed it was suitable to use with Microsoft Word for print-
    	ing business cards.

I checked Word on my Windows95 system [Office '95] and there's no
business card template ... did I miss this by doing a limited in-
    	stall of Office '95?

Also, in experimenting with pasting a .BMP file into the document,
Word doesn't let me put any text beside the picture. How do I get
    	around this? Or can I?

Or should I just use Powerpoint instead?

I haven't bought the blank sheets yet, since I didn't know if I'd
be able to do it or not.

    	Thanks for any info.

Hi, Shawn. Maybe you can do it by futzing with the label feature.
(I have not tried this...) I have never heard of any business card
feature/template in Word (which doesn't mean there isn't one :-) ).

There are applications like Print Shop, Print Artist, etc. that do
business cards quite easily. Word wouldn't be my tool of choice for this,
but then I have Print Artist as well. :-)

    	Thanks.

I got one set up in Powerpoint that looks pretty good.

    I saw this yesterday in PC Magazine, p10, May 6, 1997. A start-up
called iPrint sells 100 paper cards for $9.99 and also gives you an
HTML version, including graphics. There is a new HTML business card
standard called VCard, which will be supported in PIMs so users can
    exchange them over the Web.

If you really want to work at it, you can build a 2x5 table to get your cards.

But if you want to do it right, contact either Papers Direct (find them in the
800 directory) or Streetwise software.

They each sell template packs for cards and brochures, etc. I believe you can
get a free demo kit from streetwise.

Also, Papers Direct now sells business cards on a sheet without the "microperf"
around the edge. They've got some space age glue holding the cards to a
backing (glue thanks to NASA, or maybe Bill Gates), and it's supposed to
run through an ink-jet or laser.

BTW, I do my cards on a Papers Direct template on my epson ink jet. Instead of
paying close to a buck a card for four colors, I get great cards for noise level
bucks.

    	Yeah, I think CVS wanted $8 for 100 cards [10 micro-perfed cards
    	per sheet].

The Powerpoint output is adequate, but the only problem is I
don't think I can cut/paste an entire "block" in Powerpoint to
duplicate it ten times on a slide ... so I'll have to cut/
paste the images [logo/picture] separately from the text.

Word97 has, in Tools..Envelopes and Labels... the Avery
Business Cards as an output. There is also the Avery
Wizard at http://www.wizard.avery.com that works with
Word. Also, a free trail version of Avery Label Pro is
	available.

Microsoft Publisher Deluxe for Windows '95

Or go to the Altavista internal search engine and look for
    "business card".
