868.0. "Autonumber Tables and Figures" by BLAZER::MIKELIS (Software Partner's Eng. MR01-3/F26) Mon Mar 24 1997 15:21

This is probably covered somewhere in this conference but i can't find it.
I need to be able to create table and figure headings so they automatically
inherit the chapter number they reside in as well as autoincrement their
number, eg,

10. System Configuration

	Table 10-1: Hardware
              .....
	Table 10-2: Software
              .....
	Figure 10-1: Diagram
              .....

I have been able to do this before but can't remember how.

I'm using word 97 and see Microsoft still hasn't improved the method for doing
this. Please help. Thanks.

It depends how your chapters are numbered. If the chapter titles are
formatted using standard Heading 1 styles, then use the Captions
command on the Insert menu.

In the Captions dialog box, click Numbering. In the Caption Numbering
dialog box, you can tell Word to include the chapter number in the
captions. However, you must be using a standard heading style
for your chapter titles.

For the record, the SES Template uses Heading 1 styles to format chapter
titles and Heading 9 styles to format appendix titles.

The DEC_V6.DOT template, however, uses sequence fields to number its
chapters, so you can't use this method. Instead, you can use the
Information Mapping Element command on the Insert menu to automatically
insert the correct field codes. The field codes reference the sequence
defined for the chapter numbers.

Thanks. That works. All i can say is that the new help wizard didn't help
me with a simple problem.
