96.7 | Jungfrau or Schilthorn choice? | AKOFAT::VISCONTI | | Tue May 06 1997 14:43 | 9 |
| We will be travelling to Interlaken in a couple of weeks, unfortunately
we may have to make a choice of visiting the Jungfrau or the
Schilthorn.
I would appreciate pro's and con's with your own recommentation. We
will also be doing the Matterhorn a couple weeks later.

Jim

Assuming that you're asking about taking the train to the Jungfraujoch, and
not climbing the Jungfrau: If you're into an awesome glacier world, I'd
recommend the Jungfraujoch. To the south you've got an amazing ice world,
to the north a green world with quite a steep drop down to Grindelwald, etc.
It's only worth its steep price if you have a clear day though.
The Schilthorn is cheaper and doesn't take as long to get to. You get a
neat panaorama view of several valleys and a lot of snowy peaks. There's a
revolving restaurant that's enjoyable to eat in as the mountains go past
your window seat.
If you like to walk, there's a nice, relatively flat path from Mrren (a
town where you change cablecars on the way up to/back from the Schilthorn)
to Grtschalp. It goes along the edge of a drop-off and gives you a super
view of the valley below and many of the major peaks in the Bernese
Oberland. As I recall, it takes about 1.5 hours. From Grtschalp you can
take a cog-train back down to Lauterbrunnen. You can also take the train
from Mrren to Grtschalp with the same view, only you can't stop to smell
the flowers :-).

Do you mean climbing the Matterhorn? If you're going to be climbing, then
I'd recommend the Jungfrau over the Schilthorn. You can hike up to the
Schilthorn without any climbing involved.

| re: .8, Thanks again Larry, just for clarification we won't be climbing
but do enjoy healthy, long walks.
I suspect it may be too much to attempt to do both the Jungfraujoch and
the Schilthorn in the same day without rushing and enjoying the
features of both. We do have 3 days in Interlaken, one is scheduled
for the mountains, another for a day trip to Bern/Gryuere, and a third
which is tentatively scheduled for local site seeing Thun/Brienz lakes.

Jim

| We took the train to Jungfrau and found out later that a helicopter
ride would have been the same price! (for four persons). So I recommend
the helicopter as the train is mostly in a long tunnel...
Have fun!
