1211.0. "Tribute albums" by BUSY::SLAB (ch-ch-ch-ch-ha-ha-ha-ha) Tue Feb 04 1997 13:47

I think we need a note for tribute albums.

    	So here it is.

I have "Dragon Attack" [Queen] and "Legends of Metal" [Judas
Priest] in the car but haven't listened to them yet. Are they
    	any good?

The Judas Priest tribute is the typical 1 song per band format,
but the Queen tribute appears to be a set of musicians that did
a bunch of songs together, for the most part.

I had also "Dragon Attack" and I think there were some excellent
moments while other covers were just OK. The first song, "I want it
all", was the best for me (Robin Mc Auley singing). James La Brie from
DT, sings also on two songs but I was not very impressed.
There are also some fine guitar parts in places.

I don't have the Judas Priest tribute but I know that it should contain
a cover by Iced Earth (so you can hear what they do sound like). You
should like Iced Earth's Dark Saga.

1211.3JP tribute on Century Media, nobody has it??SUBSYS::MSOUCYMentalmETALMikeWed Feb 05 1997 05:4321

Noone has gotten either of the 2 Judas Priest releases from Century
Media which has a bunch of bands doing songs from them and I've heard
it's supposed to be pretty good. I'll have to check into that. I see
that there is another VA - Tribute to Judas Priest coming out also, but
I don't think this is the CM release as those came out last year some
    time....

I think Working Man off of Magna Carta label for Rush is quite good
except for two parts I don't care for, one is them putting "Mission" on
that release when they could have used something else as to me it just
doesn't fit the overall mood/tone of the disc, and Anthem, while Mark
Slaughter does a decent job on the vocals, George Lynch just over does
it and blows the song for me.....the rest I think is quite good with
Mike Portnoy of DT doing some very good drumming, James Labrie doing
some good stuff, along with a lot of the other musicians (some good
bass riffs on YYZ which surprised me!). Still, a decent investment
since I am a Rush fan from waaaaaaaaay back. I prefer pre Power Windows
    stuff though...

1211.4BUSY::SLABCandy'O, I need you ...Thu Feb 06 1997 14:5417

I've listened to most of "Legends of Metal - Judas Priest Tribute".

Most are pretty good, the [expected] highlight being "The Hellion/
    	Electric Eye" by Helloween.

There are 2 versions of "The Ripper", 1 by Mercyful Fate and 1 by
Iced Earth. Both are pretty good, but neither singer really tries
to achieve the high notes. The Iced Earth singer hits a couple of
them at the end of the song, but I'm not sure why he waits until
then since he skipped a few along the way.

"Love Bites" by Nevermore is pretty terrible, IMO.

Next up is "Dragon Attack - Queen Tribute".

On The Dark Saga, the singer from Iced Earth uses the higher range only
towards the last part of the album, but when he does it, the effect is
    really impressive.

I listened to almost all of "Dragon Attack" this morning.

"I Want It All" and "One Vision" are the best of the 11 songs,
and the rest are just OK.

Would someone be willing to post the songs and the artists that did
    them?

Well, I picked up "In the Name of My Father" by The Jason Bonham
Band and listened to it 2 or 3 times. All Led Zeppelin songs,
and it was recorded live as far as I can tell.

The lead singer sounds sort of like Robert Plant, and the band is
quite good. I'm not a huge fan of Led Zeppelin, so I can't com-
ment on the faithfulness to the originals.

10 or 11 tracks, but the last track is a long medley of several
    	songs.
