1209.1 | another band on my list! | SUBSYS::MSOUCY | MentalmETALMike | Mon Jan 27 1997 07:28 | 10 |

This is another band I have been meaning to listen to, and they are on
my list. Ophthalamia is another one in the similar vein, as well as
Winter, Dawn, and several others. But Opeth is on my list and will look
for them the next time I am in Newbury Comics. Sorin, do you have
either of the Identity discs, Death...is just the beginning III, or
Beauty in Darkness? Let me know.

1209.2 | Great music .. | AXPLAB::VLASIU | Sorin Vlasiu - Brussels, Belgium | Mon Jan 27 1997 08:49 | 9 |
| Re. Mike
No, I don't have them.
Opeth is fine especially for the music. The accoustical parts are
really outstanding on an attentive listening.
But ... first get Dominus' "The first 9". It's a crusher !

1209.3 | not at CDNow...only "View to the Dim" | SUBSYS::MSOUCY | MentalmETALMike | Mon Jan 27 1997 09:00 | 6 |

CDNow only shows "View to the Dim", no "The first 9"....and I just
checked for Opeth....none found.... ;-( Guess I will have to try and
rely on Newbury for some of these, or the Import place in Nashua.

| "Morningrise" is Opeth's second CD. The first was "Orchid", much in the
same style (progressive). "View to the Dim" was Dominus' previous
album. I haven't heard it but I've seen good remarks about it.

re: -1
Just received Morningrise from Dark Symphonies mail order out of
Billerica, MA. Ordered thursday, received sat. which was good! It is a
long disc and has some nice acoustic parts. Century Media has both
listed for $10 (I paid $15 through DS) so I will order Orchid through
CM later on. 5 tracks, 10+ minutes each! One might be under 10 mins,
but rest are above 10 in length. You can tell Dan Swano had influence
on these guys (and they even mention him in the liner notes). Mainly
death-ish vocals a-la Edge of Sanity, some quieter parts. Overall quite
good, I'll have to put it in the changer this week.

1209.6 | this is a good listen, probably better on headphones! | SUBSYS::MSOUCY | MentalmETALMike | Fri May 02 1997 07:59 | 25 |

It's in the changer and I didn't get to finish listening to track 4 by
the time I got to work. Dats ok! I'll finish it on the way home
instead! This is some good stuff if you can get beyond the vocals as
the acoustic parts are quite nice and show some good thoughts behind
the process of writing the music. Nice interludes I guess you can say.
You really can tell Dan Swano has influence on this band! Just listen
to the vocals and the listen to Crimson by EoS (Dan Swano's band) and
you can hear the similarities like he was doing the singing (which
according to the liner he is only their "guide").
BTW - Dan Swano has LEFT Edge of Sanity! He said their may be other EoS
albums, but he is going to be concentrating on his other project(s)
which include I believe "Nightingale" which *I* assume to be another
band he has or had put together. I still haven't heard/gotten Infernal
by EoS (Sorin: you have this yet?) which is their latest.
Now to find Opthalamia, Skepticism (can be gotten from same place I got
this one from so I will order it there), and Avernus (if I can find
them also). Sorin, check out Morgion "Among Majestic Ruin" for some
cool heavy low-end death/doomdeath music! 5 tracks 34 mins long, one
instrumental (3rd track). I like that guys death vocals! ;-)

On headphones their music is very fine. But the vocals are still a bit
out of phase compared to the rest of their music. It's the reason I
prefer their last song on the CD when they use traditional vocals.

1209.8 | Prices of imports in your area? | KAOFS::C_MENENDEZ | CARLOS, SOO ONT MCS (705)945-7862 | Mon May 05 1997 09:37 | 22 |

Mike:
I asked CM to send me both Opeth CDs, but they did not have them in
stock yet. But at 10 or 11 bucks a crack, this is a great price. I also
noted CM has expanded their catalog quite extensively, and they are
planning to add more titles to it. This is great news, because since
the Relapse/NBA split these 2 comapnies are charging $18-$20 for some
of the SAME titles.
I am trying to re-order the Opteh CDs again today, will post here
if they now have the, in stock.
Mike, how much arethe local stores charging you for imports? My
local store wanted $27 for the Cryptopsy I had ordered before, but got
them down to $16 which I think is morethan appropiate for an import. I
would like to get the In Flames and Dark tranquility, but I am not
paying such exhorbitant prices.

Carlos, I got my Opeth from Dark Symphonies (mail order out of
Billerica, MA). Got the discs (Old Man's Child - Born of the
Flickering, which I believe is black metal) for $30 + 3 shipping and
had them in 2 days. They have a lot of black stuff along with doom and
death metal stuff (Mortiis, Dimmi Borgir(sp)). Prices are cheaper than
I thought since most of that stuff is import and in the teen range for
costs for most all of them. Email me and I will send you the webpage
address.

1209.10 | good disc, excellent changes between electric & acoustic | SUBSYS::MSOUCY | MentalmETALMike | Fri May 09 1997 06:31 | 10 |

The more I listen to this disc, the more I really like it and what they
did mixing Progressive and Death metal. It is really cool! The vocals
are the hardest part for those who are not into that to get beyond and
into the music. One track is 20 minutes and doesn't seem that long!
Last track has clean vocals that are done well, as are the other clean
parts throughout the disc. I guess Orchid by Opeth will be added to my
list (ever growing).

1209.11 | 20 "short" minutes.... | KAOFS::C_MENENDEZ | CARLOS, SOO ONT MCS (705)945-7862 | Mon May 12 1997 18:26 | 8 |
| Mike:
It's funny you mention that the 20 min. song goes by so fast.
That's exactly what Opeth tried to do, according to the last review
I read on the Relapse catalog. BTW, did you get your copy? It's good
and juicy!

1209.12 | Orchid | AXPLAB::VLASIU | Sorin Vlasiu - Brussels, Belgium | Tue May 13 1997 04:57 | 5 |
| I got their previous CD "Orchid" and it's in the same vein as
"Morningrise". 65 minutes, 7 songs. Same deathish vocals (and some
screaming). If you enjoy "Morningrise" you'll surely like "Orchid".

re: -.11
Hi Carlos,
I don't know why I got the Resound catalog (tossed it, but probably
shouldn't have as they had some bands I wanted to pick up cd's from, oh
well, I'll see if I can't scare up another one). I read the article on
them and a couple others, interesting read on Opeth. Skepticism is high
on my list as is Winter too, if I can get the latter....
