REVIEW: Bloodhound Gang, _Use Your Fingers_ (Cheese Factory/Underdog/
Columbia)
- Bob Gajarsky
Imagine the Beastie Boys in their pre-_Licensed To Ill_ days,
without Rick Rubin to guide them and with their creativity being (as yet)
unfulfilled. Now, put them in the middle of Pennsylvania, and you've
got the Bloodhound Gang.
Is the group's name a reference to the detectives on the 1980's
public television kids show, 3-2-1 Contact? Damned if I know. But they
throw out references to any and all cultural references from the
1970's to the 1990's, from Rip Taylor (the Gong Show! among other things)
to Star Search and everything in between.
The album is _Use Your Fingers_ and the first single, "Mama Say",
is a take on the gibberish spouted by Michael Jackson on his single,
"Wanna Be Startin' Something". And with samples from "Goodhumor Man"
and "Save A Prayer", the gang come this close to producing a perfect
trailer-park rap song.
Unfortunately, that's the theme of the album - almost getting there.
The deliberate tempo switches of the songs gets tiresome after a while,
which is a shame - their lyrics, while possibly offensive (and definitely
not politically correct) to some, are really funny and their non-rap
cover of Kim Wilde's "Kids In America" comes off without a hitch.
They even attempted to sample an unknown Cure song, but were
turned down. So, in the liner notes, they say "If you see them (the Cure)
walking down the street, hold them down and make them eat red meat".
That's typical for the humor injected here - who else would sing
the K.I.D.S. Incorporated theme?
In conclusion, it's not your standard white rap album, and it's
not the Beastie Boys. But it does deserve a chance at your local
record store's listening booth.

| I saw these guys on Much Music last night and busted a gut! These are
some pretty sick puppies!
Best part of the video, when that old bag runs up on stage and puts the
tongue to 'em!!!
I will probably never go out and buy an album from them, but I also
think I'll never change the channel when I see that video again.

[I found "Use Your Fingers" at an internet CD store, and I just
had to order it ... I'll post a review after I've received and
heard it.]
Well, I've listened to "One Fierce Beer Coaster" 4-5 times, and
a select few songs 7-8 times. It gets better every time I hear
it, IMO.
In the liner notes, the band admits that they write 5th grade
lyrics and elementary music. But, hey, that never stopped The
Beatles, either ... did it?
All the songs can be traced to a direct root/influence, but I'm
having a tough time making all the connections. I know that I
can name the influential songs/artists, but they're not coming
to me for some reason.
Within the next day or 2 I'm going to load it into my Duster
and cruise around with the stereo blasting so I can annoy all
my neighbors. Sean, wanna go for a ride? I won't have to
ring your doorbell, because you'll know I'm there. 8^)
1 Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny
11 Going Nowhere Slow
It's been a long time since the last Scatterbrain album ... do
you need a fix? Well, these are both respectable tributes to
their style, especially #11, which has the instrumentation,
vocal style and backing vocal style down pat. #1 has the
instrumentation down, but the vocals are higher-pitched, and
includes competent record scratching, and it rips.
3 Fire Water Burn
You've probably heard this on the radio by now. "White guy rap"
could describe it pretty well, since it's basically a narrative
set to a rhythm background. Amusing/bizarre. No censoring of
the album cut.
* 4 Yellow Fever
Not on this album. It was apparently available on a previous
release [import, possibly].
4 I Wish I Was Queer So I Could Get Chicks
Neo-punk style ... think upbeat Green Day, possibly. Competent
record scratching.
6 It's Tricky
Serious Beastie Boys influence here. This song rips. Competent
record scratching.
10 Boom
More "white guy rap". Satirical, if anything.

> Well, what do you think?
Novelty stuff. Kinda funny listening to the words, cool party
tunes, etc.... but there's just too much of an absence of
"music," for me personally. The sampling, the rapping, the
stock guitar riffs. Been there, done that (listened to my
Beastie Boys CD about twice before stashing it forever).
Rap can be okay - I like Run DMC, and variations on the theme
like Rage Against the Machine. I still have to put Scatterbrain
way over these guys - at least they played, you know, real tunes.
Well, to me they were. :^)
I think also I'm just sort of getting worn down with the
"attitude" thang... that in-your-face, trash-talking, NBA,
yo' momma, bumper sticker approach to life. "Hold your head up
high and blow your brains out," yeah, dissing the world was
funny about the first bazillion times it was done...
The CD's okay, though, I'm probably exaggerating things too much,
it's good entertainment, but I dunno if I'd say good music. The
lyrics are pretty funny, though ("the drummer from Def Leppard only
has one arm!") Perhaps I'm just not in the right mood this week.
"Why is everybody always picking on me?" was probably my favorite,
gotta give good marks for the sample of Atlanta Rythym Section :^)

Somebody just informed me that "Fire Water Burn" is a cover of
and old disco tune. Really? You learn something new every day.
Who did it? Were the lyrics the same?

Rap. It was popular back when I was in high school. (85ish)
CJ, who didn't like the tune the first time around. ;-)
