Remember that no matter where you have it, someone is going to
have to travel some distance to get there. And if that same
someone has to work the next day, it could make a difference
as to the day/time that this person will be able to play.
Ergo, Sunday is better because an earlier start [and finish]
time can be set.
But I'd suggest you decide on a day of the week, then call a
club or 2 and get a few possible dates [and plan on 7-8 bands]
and then post the dates and put out a call for bands. Or you
poll people as to the best available day of the week and go
from there.
[And if you try to reply to this and it's locked, I'm moving
it to another location.]

For me Red Square would be ok, not as bad as trying to make it to
wooster and then back home and back to shr in the morning (live in
methuen/salem nh line area). Sunday would be cool cuzz you could maybe
have a BIG JAM with a buncha the boyz/girlz (any female band members?)
towards the end of the show. Something like 5-9PM bands play maybe 30
minute sets, at 9:00-10:00 pm have the jam! Little Richards Roadhouse
(which I have NOT gone to yet) in north andover has jam night on sunday
from 5-9PM. Gonna go catch it one of these weekends! I like da blues!

changeover.
So 8 bands would take 6 hours at least.

1175.7 | | EDWIN::HOOKER | | Wed Aug 14 1996 15:06 | 26 |
| Well logistically if you're gonna have 7 or 8 bands it saves time
to have one drum set. Although I hate that (most drummers would rather
play their own set than someone elses). It's not so much the time
saved in breakin down a set and putting up another, it's the time it
takes for the fricken sound guy to come take the mics off the drum set
and put them on the next. Most of em freak when you try to save them
time by taking their mics off your set or putting them on. I'll offer
that mine could be used by the other bands (unless of course Rob's is
bigger and would be willing to let everyone use his)...yes size is
everything ;)
At any rate the logistics can wait until we know how many bands we'd
have...but I think it should be not more than 8 bands.
Am I hearing that it would be better to do this on a Sunday afternoon
to evening type thing (3-9pm) ? If we would have 7-8 bands then yes since
giving each band 30 minutes would mean 3-1/2 to 4 hours of just music
not to mention set changes, time for band members to guzzle beer, etc..
Although it wouldn't rule out a Thursday night thing either (7p-1am
could work maybe).
I'd still like to know who would want to be in it ? Buck ? db ? Rob ?
Bueller ? Bueller ? Who are the musicians in here that live in the
area ?
Shane, who just got reorg'd...and liked it

| Rob has been more than willing to let folks use his drumset in the
past.
I think his kit has worked out very well at past DECjams because we
feed the sound guys both mic'd acoustic drums and MIDI drums (Rob and I
MIDI'd his acoustic kit). I thought the drum sound at the last Cove
DECJam was well above average.
Another option/solution to the multiple drum-kit problem is to have
space on the stage for two drum-kits - that way, one guy can be setting
up while another is playing. My 2 cents would be to "reserve" one
"drum kit area" for the "house kit" which would be shared if that's
possible. Some drummers (at least at past DECjams) were more than
happy to avoid the hassle of carting their kits around.
It is my foremost hope and expectation that our band Metropolis
(Rob, Tom Benson, Lance Levine, myself and two non-deccies) would
be able to play at this. Couldn't quite guarantee it though.

DECjam 1996 OCT 6, 1996 Red Square, Nashua NH
Calling for bands to play for this event. Only rules are that at least
one member of the band be a DECcie. As it is right now I've scheduled
it from 3p - 9pm on that Sunday. 18 and over are welcome and they can
still serve all 21 and over. [DISCLAIMER--this event is not sponsored
by Digital Equipment Corporation...any similarity between the people
involved with this event and that of DEC employees is purely
coincidental...in other words, I'm responsible for organizing this and
DEC cannot be held liable if you break a guitar string].
I'm limiting it to 8 bands so that each gets a good half-hour. Plus
there will be some time left over for a random jam perhaps. More
details to come.
If you have a band, or can make form one quickly, send me email with
your name, email address, and phone #. Also if you can give me the
number of people in your band (names would also be good and what
instrument they play) and the type of music you will be playing it
would be appreciated. I'd like to see some real diversity here so
everyone is welcome. The first 7 that can respond to me will get dibs.
I say 7 because I myself will be in one of the bands (sorry but I get
a few priviledges since it seems I'm the one organizing this). So..
the list thus far of bands...
GFY -- Hard Rock (original music)
Sean O'Shea --vocals
Rodney Lukowski -- bass
Bob Fillion -- guitar
Chris Haley -- guitar
Shane Hooker -- drums
Send responses to EDWIN::HOOKER. Can some moderator (Shawn) please
post this in the other music related conferences ? Thanks...
Shane

| btw...
even if your a band of only 'one' and feel like doing this let
me know.
And I guess there's no rule saying that if you're in one band that
doesn't mean you can't play for another band too...meaning if someone
is playing in their own band but also wants to play in a band composed
of more DECcies than that might be ok too. It'd be cool if we could
get a band of all DECcies together. But then again we don't want
one person being a band whore and playing in every single band either.
We'll settle everything out as I get some more replies and things
become a bit more solid. Laters....

sure we can commit. this time around though im INCLINED to use someone
elses drum set, BUT it needs to at least have a dbl bass drum or double

people would be into using my midi set and from the sounds of it, my

doesnt have dbl bass, then ill have to work something else out (i dont mind
if people use mine, again its just a space vs. will they use midi issue).

|
1175.40 | | EDWIN::HOOKER | | Fri Aug 16 1996 09:45 | 43 |
| As for drum sets go I've offered that people can use mine. It's
large enough to keep most people happy I think (maybe too large for
some) but I know that it fits on the Red Square drum riser. So here's
what I got:
Ludwig (Rocker series) 8 piece set mounted on Tama rack system
2 bass drums with DW5000 pedals
1 snare
4 rack toms
1 floor tom (with one Tazmanian devil to hold drum sticks)
Zildjian cymbals
1 20" ride
2 16" crashes
1 19" crash
1 18" china boy high
1 14" hi-hats
The only thing with my set is that it's set up lower and closer than
most since I'm more affected by gravity than others. So I'm sure some
adjustments will be needed for those a bit taller than me. The other
deal is that if anyone breaks a fricken cymbal then they're payin for
it. I've had to replace 2 cymbals already this year and they ain't
cheap. So as long as they're not a cymbal eater they're more than
welcome to use all of mine.
As people start sendin me info on their band and equipment they use
I'll try to figure out if we can all get away with using one set-up
(drums, amps, bass cabinet). That way people would just have to bring
their effects processors and plug in to the amps already on stage again
saving some time and leavin more time for music and havin fun.
So far I've heard from db and Dave Nelson. So it looks like we still
need 5 more bands. And don't forget individuals are welcome too. If
people just want to get up and play the guitar and sing a couple tunes
that would be cool too. You don't have to use up all 30 minutes we
can be flexible. So any of you folk type singers or whatever speak up.
Also Ian ...do you have any bagpipes ? You could like lead us in some
Scottish folk song about some battle where all these people were killed
(most Scottish folk songs). Laters...

The answer is that all bands of all kinds are welcome and you shouldn't
feel the need to "fit in" and CERTAINLY not to "compete" as in a
"battle".
The unique thing about a DECjam is that its a chance to do whatever the
hell you want. No club owners to worry about. An audience that is
likely to appreciate and encourage almost anything you do. You don't
even have to already have a band - you can form one just for the
DECjam.
In fact, my tendency has always been to NOT have my regular band play
at DECjams, but to do something different. In fact my band,
Metropolis, started out that way. We all loved progressive rock from
the 70's but never figured we'd ever have a chance of getting bookings
doing that stuff so no point in trying to get a band together.
But a DECjam offered the chance to do the music that we really loved
without having to worry about getting bookings, or support from the
crowd.

| Well thanks for all the feedback folks. I'm reassured that this will
be a DECjam in the classic sense of the term. I'm looking forward to
getting out to see and meet. I've lurked in this file (well, GUITAR
actually) for many years, read the reviews of DECjams past, even
watched a memorable video (nice pecs, db :-), and looked forward to
the day when my chops and my schedule and my network of jamming buds
would all come together long enough to get into one of these. I'm
sincerely looking forward to it....

I talked to the other guys in Metropolis and everyone is willing to
do a generic blues in E with you as long as it doesn't "count" as
being part of our set.
So if that's cool with the organizers, and you don't have something
cooked up with some other people (which would be fine), we'd be happy
to back you up.
My only concern is... Rob seems to want to do it in 5/8. ;-)
db
p.s. And maybe this'll prove to others that I don't hate the blues
It's just that I can only take it in limited dosages. ;-)
p.p.s. The 5/8 thing is kinda an inside joke. I once went to a
bluesjam with Rob at Stormy Monday up here in Merrimack.
Rob sat in on a tune and played about the first 5 bars in
4/4 before I hand signalled "6/8" to him. Actually, I thought
4/4 over 6/8 was kinda cool (a polyrhythm) but I Knew the
bar was full of blues purists. ;-)

| cool 5/8...I actually wrote a song we're trying to work on
that goes from 9/8 to 5/8 time...just need some lyrics.
The Metropolis /k thing is cool we're flexible besides I
heard much from people who have bands together yet. Originally
I had thought we might be able to find 8 bands but so far it's
only about 5 which is fine cause that will allow time for people
to do kinda weird things and more jam time or whatever.
In fact if any of the musicians want to recycle themselves and
appear in multiple bands I don't see why not...
I'll be playin with GFY for 30 minutes but if anyone else wants
to put a band together to do a few cover tunes and needs a drummer
let me know...anyone out there like Van Halen ?? ;)

Hey, I'd like to do something like that. And its clear already that we

I called today to iron out some details with Mark their
booking guy. He tells me that it's not going to happen because
Red Square is CLOSING ! I asked when he found this out he
said last week. Nice of him to f*ckin call me to let me
know that it's cancelled. What an professional a**hole and
unprofessional booking agent this guy is. So anyways the only
good news is that this guy Mark, who I never liked much, is
out of a job as a booking agent. He says that the Bahama Beach
club will remain open but that they will no longer have any
live music.
So.....what to do about DECJam 96 ?? Well I called Jay down
at the good ol' Sir Morgan's Cove and he's supposed to get
back to me about having it on Oct 20. The 6th was too soon
for them (understandable) and the 15th was on Columbus Day
weekend which I thought wouldn't be a good choice. So I will
let you know as soon as he gets back to me after talking with
the owner. One good thing is that Chris Haley, GFY's guitarist,
is Jay's (the booking guy for the Cove) son's math teacher.
So we have some leverage to get in on that date...if we don't
his kid might not pass 7th grade algebra !! Anyways, I'll keep
you up to date. Sorry kids... hopefully everyone will be able
to adjust to the new place and time once it becomes certain.
And please feel free to egg, set fire, urinate on, or defacate

| My interpretation was that they would be closing Red Square
for good. What they do with it I don't know but the guy said
that they had no intentions of having live music there anymore.
I asked the booking guy where that left him and he said 'looking
for a job'. I don't understand why it's soo difficult for them
to stay in business with live music. Judy and I are always having
to go off to Manchester or down to MA to catch bands. It'd
be nice if there were a place in Nashua....oh well..

There is Sharky's off of Main St. (Nashua) which occasionally book
a tolerable band or two... Other than that, if you're gonna
listen to live music in South Nashua, be prepared to listen
to some band that will inevitably play Mustang Sally and
other such stuff (not that I minded listening to them play

I thought there was a blues bar if you crossed main st. coming from
Hudson on rte. 111? And Stormy Mondays in merrimack maybe?
You could always come to Salem and hit the Mall at Rockingham Park and
go to LJ's. They have some decent local bands that play there every
friday/saturday night (not sure how good every weekend, but usually
there is someone good there most times). A couple decent bands I've
heard is Buzz Bomb, and my friends band Jet City (I know Stan the
singer from when he was in Thrust). Another decent one is Southpaw, a
friend knows someone in the band and are pretty good (play at
Samantha's restaurant in the lounge downstairs on main st. salem, aka
ret 97).
Salem needs another bigger club for live music....small places are ok
to hit though too!

| I think Sharkey's is (part of) what used to be "Headliners North".
It is VERY divey (I've played jams there) but... I look at it as
having "blues atmosphere". Obviously, if you're looking for a swanky
blues club, you wanna head 10 minutes north to Stormy Monday Cafe
in Merrimack which is an exceptionally nice place IMHO although not
laid out particular well.
Headliners North used to be a GREAT place to catch bands. Lots of well
known performers played there. Two folks played there that years later
would be featured performers at Great Woods events (I'm pretty sure
Bonnie Raitt played Headliners and another guy whose name I'm spacing
on but who is a kinda electric blues guitarist with a major major
league drinking problem - he's known for leaving the stage for a drink
while laying his guitar on his amp while its screaming with feedback -
I think his first name is Merle).
I saw the latter at Headliners. He sucked BIG TIME. Worst show I've
ever seen (excluding Satriani shows of course) Was way too drunk
to play. Basically just made noise for 45 minutes and then came off
stage (and I have no doubt passed out moments later).

Dave,
Where is Headliners? There's nothing near Sharky's by that
name. And from what I hear, Sharky's is no where near at
much of a dive as it used to be. They bought out whatever
was next door and made it into one huge club/place to play
pool.
I think the reason the Red Square didn't fare so well is
that they wouldn't book cover bands. Now while most of us
are open to new, original music, when most folks go out
clubbing, they go for cover bands. Also, the Red Square paid
squat and bands would have to split the door monies with the 3-4
other bands that played the same night. The club is just too
inflexible.

Cover bands get paid, original bands usually have some kind of
arrangement that boils down to "little or no money".
