1171.0. "Moonspell - Wolfsheart, very good disc!" by SUBSYS::MSOUCY () Fri Jul 26 1996 06:31

This is a note for a fairly new band on the scene called Moonspell,
their (I believe) first full length release - Wolfheart, is pretty
good, there are some female vocals/speaking/scream(s) (not many, one I
think!), some very heavy bass notes/lines in it. You have to hear the
disc in order to get into the singer, he does sing, there also is some
speaking a-la Type O's peter steele, and I think one of the other
members also sings with a heavier voice. An instrumental or two with
some classical type sounding guitar. Some double-bass drumming here and
there in some songs too (shane might like it, but he is a van hagar
    weenie! Hi Shane!) ;-)

It is a different style with this singer, hard to put a style to him
because of some of the song structures....but it is interesting and I
think it may even be a concept type album, I'll have to read the song
titles and words as I listen to it at home to get more of a feel for
its overall effect. Very good though! Sorin might like this one!

I have only heard a couple of songs from Moonspell, and I think
both are from the Wolfheart CD. Both are very good songs.

Century Media touts this as the best band in Portugal, and
certainly one of the best doom metal bands in the world.

    Re: .3

Thanx ~Pril! They aren't that bad really, compared to some of the other
stuff I have, like My Dying Bride, now to me, that is about as brutal
as I would go! Have to be in the mood to listen to them! Check out a cd
called "Identity II" as that is where I scooped Moonspell, Merauder
(very heavy metal from local talent), and one other band that I can't
remember if I have gotten them or not yet! I liked about 14 of the 18
tracks on the disc which is pretty good! Got it for $2.99, promo type
    deal.

Tiamat is heavy and I like them too! Gotta get more of them!

;-) So, I'll take that as a compliment! And yes, Slab does listen to
some strange stuff! I don't even want to think about how many cd's he
has now! I'm well over the 200 mark, and not looking to break any sort
    of record!

1171.9SCASS1::BARBER_Afollows instructionsTue Jul 30 1996 08:387
Um, you're welcome...if you took that as a compliment. 8) I listen to
some pretty strange stuff too, but I pride myself on variety. It seems
like this kind of stuff is all you listen to. Not that that's a
problem, but I would get bored with it after a while.

Now, Shawn's the epitomy of variety. BTW, I think Steve was talking
    about the Impotent Sea Snakes...
1171.10bored? Snap into a slim jim! Oops, Doh!SUBSYS::MSOUCYTue Jul 30 1996 08:5122

    re: .9

Bored with it after awhile? Why do you think I switch a few discs
around now and then! And put Jean Luc Ponty in there! Just for that I
am going to have to load in Funkadelic (or is it Parlaiment(sp)) Maggot
Brain! Awesome song though! Great cd cover too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    8)

I am very into Tangerine Dream as well, and used to get into Spyro
Gyra, Lee Rittenour, Jeff Lorber, Clarke/Duke Project, Stanley Clarke,
George Duke, I can go on and on! Oh yeah, Return to Forever and Weather
Report!! To name just a few that I have listened too/have somewhere!

Moonspell is heavy, and a tad different with their vocal style too
which kinda makes them sort of unique (imho). I like HEAVY DOOMY GRINDY
METAL, among other types, what can I say?! I don't do country, rap or
classical (although the latter could be gotten into with the violins!)
    ;-)

~Pril, or is it `Pril? Dependent on mood maybe! ;-)

Hmm, you need to open your musical horizons there a bit! ;-) ;-)
I heard a lot of the stuff I listen to from other people if you can
believe that! I usually talk to the folks at Newbury Comics in Salem,
NH about the type of music I listen to and they rattle off some bands,
we talk about style/type of music, etc...and I take it from there. The
one kid steered me to Tiamat, and I told him that they are great! He
mentioned the day I got it that he has turned others onto them and
noone has ever said they didn't like them! Tis true I tell ya!

I don't care much for the glam-rock stuff, a-la some Crue stuff, and
other poseurs (waiting for flames on that call!!!!!!) from the mid-late
80's....Like Faster Pussycat, Warrant, some of Skid Row stuff, Poison,
    etc....big hair, etc....Gimme heavy/dark/foreboding stuff! I tend to
not go towards Death music much, some of it is rather brutal, even for
my tastes! I like the Gloom/Doom scene better with its atmospherics,
and such, and enjoy a band who employ other musical means than just
guitar, bass, drums, i.e. Celestial Season, growly vocals, etc...but
violins, keys, etc...same for Cemetary with use of keys, but they are
more metal. Amorphis, new singer in band now, pretty good too, and the
growly vocalist still does his thing. These guys have got to be using a
vocal enhancement/de-hancement machine because if they did this as much
on a long tour they'd have to cancel half-way through or less due to
vocalist problems!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of it is interesting stuff too! I
get a kick out of some of the lyrics these people come up with at
times, take Type O for instance! Listen to Summer Breeze, then read the
lyrics in the case! Totally different!

BTW - Did you get Bloody Kisses yet! If not, DO SO NOW! Shawn and I
    command thee!!! ;-)

    	Mike:

For the type of stuff you like you should definitely call Century
Media. I get all those IDENTITY CDs for free.

If you can get your hands into it, there is a new Tiamat double CD
which has one CD full of compilations of their other CDs as well as a
live CD set from the Wildhoney tour. I tried to get it from CM but they
    are sold out.

Also, with any order of Tiamat CDs from them you get a free Tour
    Sampler CD free.

    	Just FYI

What is the number for Century Media? I sent mail to someone from the
inet and I think they were from Century Media and I gave them my

I still have that email laying around here.

The number for CM is (310)574-7400.

Punch extension # 116 and ask for CHRIS, he's pretty good. Word
of advise; he told me to send money orders instead of checks as they go
through a lot faster. I got my last order in less than a week, which
IMO is excellent for mail order.

Make sure when you get the catalog to order the $3 cds, as some of
    them are real bargains.

If you don't have any luck let me know, I guess I can photocopy a
catalog and order form for you.

Remember they are in california, so be aware of the time zone.

This cd is growing on me also....you just have to get used to the
vocalists style. Pretty heavy, especially the bass lines at times. And
it is a story of sorts on this release. I believe this is their second
full release as there is at least one other before this one. Quite good
stuff, but `Pril wouldn't like it (my guess anyways....!)

"Irreligious" is a right follow-up to "Wolfheart". Shorter songs in
general but more keyboards and the same excellent melodic content.
    Highly recommended also.

I am glad you like this one too! Century Media is supposed to be coming
out with a live comp. disc in the next month or so with LIVE moonspell,
I think morgoth, Samael and a few other bands on their label. I am
really on the lookout for some serious crushing DOOM/Doom-Death metal
bands and unfortunately most I am looking for are all imports ;-(

    Hi again Shaun ;-)

Yes, "Opium" is quite indicative of their style (heavy and with good
tunes). It's from "Irreligious", their last CD. I have this one and
their previous "Wolfheart". Both are excellent and in the same vein.
You may start with "Irreligious" and if you like it (which is quite
probable), you will want "Wolfheart" (which you'll also like).
There are no longer songs on "Irreligious", while on "Wolfheart" two of
the songs are a bit longer ("Vampiria" is one of them). I like their
    "transylvanian vampire" english accent ;-)
I think you have probably heard also The Gathering on the Identity CD.
