1167.0. "Screaming Trees" by WOTVAX::DAVIESG (Guy Davies) Tue Jul 02 1996 06:59

Can't believe there is nothing in here about this great band!

The main reason for starting this is that (at long last) some dates
    have been tentatively announced for Britain at the end of August;
however, they are all still to be confirmed.

Have the band got a new record out in the states?

Have they been touring since the last album, "Sweet Oblivion" from
1992, if so where and when?

This band have got to be number one in my list of "Bands I most want to
see before I die", their combination of swirlling psychedelia and
monstrously heavy guitar finally persuaded me that whatever my musical
ambitions the Screaming Trees would do it better than I ever could! :-)

Anyone else into "Uncle Anasthesia", "Buzz Factory" et al

Could even discuss the merits of their Small Faces cover on the CD
version of the "Nearly Lost You There" single!

    Regards

    Guy

Saw 'em on MTV this weekend....

I wasn't overly impressed. :-( I mean, they are good musicians and
all, but i don't like their kind of music.

"I Nearly Lost You" was 1 of the best songs of the year when
    	it came out, IMO.

I'd definately agree with the last :-)

Does this mean they are touring/got a new record out?

What did he do to be a complete idiot?

I think we should be told!

How recent was this, I take it that they didn't exactly play a full set
and the crowd was less than appreciative of what they had to offer?

Oh well, suppose I'll find out wether they're always like this in
August, if so I'll be demanding my money back!

1167.8Dust - The New AlbumWOTVAX::DAVIESGGuy DaviesMon Jul 29 1996 04:5240
Well the new album is finally out.

Was the inordinate wait of 4 years worth it!?!

The reviews for the record have been almost univerally excellent, this
is not always a good sign for the bands I tend to like :-)

Apart from Mark Laneghan's solo effort 3 years back, all has been quiet
since the release of the "Dollar Bill" single from the Sweet Oblivion
album which came out at the backend of 1992.

So it was with some trepedation that I put the CD on for the first
time. Further worries ensued when the photie of the band reveal that
Barret Martin now has short hair (!) and Mark Lanneghan looks like he's
dyed his even redder (?), the Connor Brothers are both in need of a
desperate diet (so no change there :-)).

First run through and I wasn't convinced. The Psychadelic edge seems to
have been lost and the frantic riffing of "buzz Factory" and "Uncle
Anasthesia" was gone! However, by the third listen the album takes on
    monstorous proportions, a real grower.

The album kicks off with "Halo of Ashes", which builds nicely for more
familiar styling of the opening single "All I Know" (very much in the
veign of "Nearly Lost You There"). This is followed by 3 numbers ("Look
at You", "Dying Days" and "Make My Mind") that all feature huge riffs
and swirlling atmospherics that still lend that defineing psych edge to
the bands music. Track 6 and the first slowie "Sworn and Broken", very
much like Lanneghan's solo stuff. Then on for the epic stuff, "Witness"
& "Traveller", both fluctuate through a number of styles and paces
before swelling to a rewarding climax :-), "Dime Western", the next
track doesn't fit too well here and should have gone nearer the
beginning of the record. Then the final track "Gospel Plow", the real
tour de force, starts off as a basic chant, gets hijacked into a psych
rock wig out before reverting to a delightful 3rd world sounding coda.

So the wait was worth it, the albums a cracker. Lets hope the gigs are
confirmed and they cann then deliver live!
