1137.0. "Therion" by SUBSYS::MSOUCY () Thu Mar 14 1996 06:41

    Ok, here's another new note from me! A band called Therion. I thought I
    read somewhere on the newsgroups that I think White Zombies old drummer
    left and went to this band? I am not sure of this though.

    Heavy band with female backing vocals on a couple of tracks. Track 4 is
    interesting in the sound of it, kind of hard to describe, I don't want
    to say opera-etic kinda? New word??! But the singer sort of reminds me
    of a cross between Prongs singer and Gene Simmons of Kiss in parts of
    the disc. He sings on the lower end, but not gutter-growly-death
    stuff. Just a deep voice. So far it isn't too bad. I have to give it
    some more spins.

         Let us know how it sounds once you here the entire CD. Does it
    have a White Zombie-like sound? Is it fast? I've never heard of them,
    but any group with a drummer who played in White Zombie can't be all
    bad.
1137.2Not really zombie-ish...but fairly heavy!SUBSYS::MSOUCYFri Mar 15 1996 05:3913

    It isn't bad, there are some faster parts, but nothing I would call
    speed metal. Heavy vocals. But there are a couple duets I guess you can
    call them with the female that is on two to three of the tracks that
    just make me want to laugh since it reminds me of opera! It's fairly
    heavy though all-around. I don't think the drummer on the disc is WZ's
    old drummer. That was something I saw on the net in a newsgroup. I
    can't remember with all the bandwidth in there....

    Hmm, WZ sound...err, not really. Give it a spin, if you don't like it,
    Shawn might buy it from you!

         Sounds cool. Maybe I'll look into it this weekend. Thanks for the
    info.
1137.4Try "Death is the beginning III"KAOFS::C_MENENDEZCARLOS, SOO ONT MCS (705)945-7862Fri May 24 1996 21:1414
    	Hey guys;

    	If you all feel like digging some of these bands, by all means get
    a double CD from Relapse Records called "Death is the beginning III".

    	Therion is among the 30 something bands on the collection, and to
    me this is a perfect intro to the kind of music Therion and others
    play.

    	Some songs are incredibly heavy and some are more doom. Some black
    metal and some industrial death. A bit for everyone, but like I said a
    perfect intro to this kind of stuff.

    Can you get that double CD anywere or do you have to go to a specific
    store just to find it? Of course we out here in CO probrobly won't be
    able to get it untill every other state has had it for like 3 months.

     p.s. Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone.
1137.6Relapse Records (800-303-0606)KAOFS::C_MENENDEZCARLOS, SOO ONT MCS (705)945-7862Mon May 27 1996 14:4247
    	RE .last

    	I ordered mine directly through Relapse (800-303-0606). That's
    their credit card hotline.

    	There are 2 versions of this compilation. The first one is an
    import digipak ($18) that has 36 bands on the 2 CDs. The NBA (Nuclear
    Blast America) version is a plastic case with 37 bands instead of 36.

    	Before I forget, you'll need the "part numbers" for the CDs. The
    import version is #4400, and the american version is #6879. Sometimes
    I get the CDs within a week, sometimes more, but never had a problem
    ordering through them.

    	As well, make sure to ask for a catalog ($2). It's well worth it
    because there are a ton of excellent bands that you just don't find in
    your regular record store, or that are just too expensive to risk.

    	With every order shipped they also enclose an update catalog with
    a hole bunch of goodies, so check it out.

    	One word of warning, though. Check the prices of the CDs before you
    decide on buying. For example, most of the CDs from Century Media are a
    bit more expensive than buying directly from CM. Bands like Tiamat,
    Comecon, Samael, Sodom, Unleashed are definitely cheaper thu Century Me
    dia. Also the same for Roadrunner records and stuff like that.

    	They have a pile of "compilations" that you can try, and in this
    kind of music what you hear on the compilation is pretty much what you
    get by buying full release CDs from the bands.

    	Also, before I let you go (I know you americans have a memorial
    day today...), check your Blockbuster music store if you have one
    around where you live. I live in the boonies, but every time I go down
    to Flint MI for whatever reason I check the BB store. They have a
    surprising number of Relapse/NBA releases at extremely reasonable
    prices. I have bought CDs that sell at Relapse for $18 at $11 or $12
    in BB, and these are Relapse's own releases!!

    	I haven't been at a TOWER in ages, so I don't know what they carry
    for death metal and stuff like that...

    	Good luck, I trust you will enjoy the compilation (and Therion of
    course).

1137.9Theli - Great CD !AXPLAB::VLASIUSorin Vlasiu - Brussels, BelgiumWed Mar 12 1997 09:4817
    Theli is certainly one of the best HM CDs of 1996 and a very original
    CD in general. Therion have used a classical choir and orchestra
    (although they have sampled most of the orchestral parts) and this,
    combined with the melodic songs, produced an outstanding album.
    The choir (especially the female singers) is present practically in all
    the songs. The choral interventions recall a bit parts of Carmina
    Burana and are very catchy.
    The singer from Therion sings in the mid/lower range (but no growl) and
    lets the choir take the lead most of the time. Quite much keyboards,
    samplers and synthesizers.
    The opera-like singing of the choir is well adapted to the rock rhythm
    and gives most of the impact to the music.
    If you are not disturbed by opera-like singing, get this CD because
    it's just *great*. I don't remeber something similar in rock music.
    Highly recommended !
