| I don't like em cause they're only 16 and they've already hit
it big :( I like their sound although have ya ever listened to
the lyrics ?? "the water's very hard to drink" well alrighty
why is it hard to drink ?? I don't get it. They're a good band
but just don't offer anything new to the music scene. Besides
as soon as that guy hits puberty his voice will probably change
and then there goes the band. :)

i figured this would happen...
> What happens when 3 aussie brats have nothing better to do than rip off
> Pearl Jam and Nirvana?
aw c'mon now... is that really fair? you a pearl jam fan? a nirvana
fan? ever read any of silverchairs interviews and their responses to
the above accusation? silverchair = musical ripoffs... maybe. but
even if they are they're certainly not the first band to be guilty of it.
> I don't even like the original Pearl Jam, never mind another one.
eesh, more of the same. surf the pearl jam web pages and listen to
what those fans have to say about silverchair sounding like pearl jam.
they might sound like a 'seattle' band, but that doesn't mean they
sound like pearl jam. pearl jam meets helmet maybe...;)
my friends that hate pearl jam hate silverchair too... so the responses
to suej's note didn't surprise me... in fact i figured as much, after
all this is 'heavy metal' and not 'radio radio' right...? ;)
i think they're a good new band. i love their sound and am a bit
amazed that a group of 16 year olds can break into heavy metal the
way they have. the album is excellent. it took me a few listens
to get into it. i bought it because someone told me 'they sound
like pearl jam'... and when i first listened to it, i just couldn't
hear it. still can't. maybe i'm just blocking it out...? the
tunes on the album sway from a mix of pj -> helmet -> candlebox ->
rage against the machine and even a little metallica sprinkled
here and there. i don't think they're out to rip anyone off...
give'em a chance...

That might be a good combination of sounds, as long as it's
light on the Pearl Jam and heavy on Helmet/Metallica/Rage
Against the Machine.

1100.8 | they don't sound the same in interview | SUBSYS::MSOUCY | | Wed Oct 04 1995 12:01 | 15 |

Have you heard them on an interview? Sounds NO WHERE NEAR the album,
and yes, why is it that most non-american bands sound american when
singing (for the most part) compared to them talking normally? Just
listen to Jagger for one! The kid sounded like a kid so they may have
done some enhancements in the recording studio? I liked the tune
"Tomorrow" until it started getting OVERPLAYED on BCN/AAF (not sure of
the latter of the two) and then hearing they were only 16 or younger in
age (doesn't mean much, but...) Will they become another
one-hit/two-hit wonder act? They gotta finish their school first! ;-)
Just some observations/opinions there.

Many vocalists sound quite different when they sing compared to
when they talk.
Not sure if it's an automatic thing, or whether they have to
consciously make an effort to do that.

There is no arguing the singer for SC has a vocal timbre VERY similar
to Eddie Vetter's (although he's NO EV!). The band, to me, LOOKS like
Nirvana ... but overall (and similarities aside), I think the
songwriting is really weak and I feel this is a flash in the pan band
riding the dying grunge wave.

Hello Iris!
I don't really hate PJ, it's just that from their first Ten CD I think
they should have done better. Yeah, they have some songs on the last
two that are ok, but they don't do anything for me. I am getting tired
of hearing the same old thing on the radio, especially IMO the
OVERPLAYING of SC's Tomorrow.....seems like it is on just about every
hour over here! Play something more obscure! Then again, I haven't had
my car for 3 weeks now (in autobody shop getting repaired) so I haven't
had my CD changer with 10 discs in it with the likes of Solitude
Aeturnus, Paradise Lost, Forbidden, Savatage, Rollins Band, etc....in
there to crank! ;-)

Hmmm....I wonder if SueJ was involved???
I just got a little article sent to me from an Aussie pen pal. I had
heard that when Silverchair singer Daniel Johns took a dive into the
audience recently they all moved back, rather than catch him, and he
was knocked unconscious. What I didn't hear was that someone stripped
his jeans right off of him while he was out cold!
The article further notes the company handling the publicity about the
incident is called: TKO.

weekend?
The drummer is a friggin' maniac, had his gig down...
In fact, the whole band reminded me of Nirvana. The guitar
player cuts his hair just like Cobain did.
And the drummer plays like he's watched every video Nirvana
ever made. Just like David Groll, I think that was the guy's
name.
Worth taping for Silverchair fans...

I didn't even know they would be on SNL, but when I flipped
the tube on, there was this maniac of a drummer trying to
kill every drum & cymbal within reach of his sticks...
Pretty interesting, looked like alot of fun...
But the guitarist cut his hair EXACTLY like Cobain, um,
when he was alive.
What an incredible business plan, do everything just like
Nirvana did, and we'll get signed. I'm wicked jealous...

I dunno...if David Grohol ?? is really talented then he hasn't been puttin
it into Nirvana's music much as far as drumming goes. I think he's
used that 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' beat in a number of songs. But
of course it does go well with that Nirvana Seatle sound I suppose.
He does put on a good hair flinging display and has a lot of energy
when he plays...I just listen more to what it is he's playing...
rather boring actually...he's no Alex VanHalen or Neil Peart ;)

hear a talented drummer

| I kind of liked the kid's style, if you know someone who records
live TV performances on a regular basis, check out their gig
from last weekend. I used to tape all Dave Letterman's and SNL's
musical guests, that's how I got Extreme performing 'You'll be
gone tomorrow'.
The kid from Silverchair knew exactly what he was doing, even
if he was taking lessons from Dave Grohl. He's no Neil Peart,
then again, no one else is.
You'd have to see the band, young describes it well.

This is just a little add on to the story about the lead singers
"leap of faith" into the crowd which were supposed to catch'em.
It seems that his Parents won't allow him to STAGE DIVE
anymore...or at least till he turns 18. Pretty embarassing when
you've got the #1 selling album of all time, from the land down under
and Mommy limits your stage performance.
IMO, I think they're a real kick a$$ band that will have a great
future ahead of them,(if they end up being the next "Stones" they've
still got about another century) and to those who complain about them
sounding like Pearl Jam or Nirvana.......WAKE UP!!!....there's only
so many sounds a screaming guitar can make.

Pretty good show.....Of course I felt WAY out of place with the
average age of the crowd much younger than the band, seeing how
the band is what 16 or 17yo?
But I thought they did a good job, sound was great and they
performed well. Well worth the 15bucks for the ticket.
