| Among the musicians who have been part of KC at different periods are:
Gregg Lake, John Wetton, Ian McDonald (later one of Foreigner founders),
Adrian Bellew (he was recently still in KC).
In the Court of the Crimson King is one of the best albums ever. In the Awake
of Poseidon sounds alike but is less impressive. The rest of the albums are
different each time depending on the period. Starless and Bible Black, Three
of a Perfect Pair are among those very interesting and which I had occasion
to listen.

...and that's not counting their two boxsets, and three or four
'best of' albums!
KC isn't very easy to describe. They're a 70s progressive rock group,
along the lines of ELP, Genesis, Yes, Camel, Gentle Giant, but with a
sound all their own. I can't say they sound _like_ any other artist,
except maybe solo-Fripp. If you want an in-depth description check
out: http://prog.ari.net/prog/GEPR/k.html#KINGCRIMSON on the WWW.
Other notable members are Bill Bruford and Tony Levin. KC varies a lot
depending on time period, but it all has the distinct KC sound. 'In
the Court of the Crimson King' is probably their best early-era album.
'Red' is the best of the mid-era Crimson (Larks Tongues, Red, Starless),
and 'Discipline' is the best of the 80's-era KC. IMHO, of course.
KC reformed last year as a double-trio: Robert Fripp & Adrian Belew
on guitars, Tony Levin & Trey Gunn on bass/Chapman Stick, and Bill
Bruford & Tony Mastelotto on drums. Their new release 'Thrak' is
excellent! Kind of combines elements of 'Red' and 'Discipline'.
See if a friend will loan you an album, or go buy one of them, but
remember, keep an open mind! KC is _usually_ an acquired taste,
but is definately worth the effort!

> Wow...that's quite a list! So...in under 10,000 words can you describe
> what/who they sound like??
Absolutely impossible.
"Discipline" is probably their crowning achievement, but it is a music
characterized by the 80's lineup, which is different than earlier
incarnations of the group.
"Lark's Tongue in Aspic" and "Starless and Bible Black" are probably
what you'd find if you could look up KC in the dictionary. Personally,
I find "Islands" to be the best of this period ("Ladies of the Road"
is a classic example of gritty leachery without resorting to the
obviousnes that many of today's inarticulate HM bands do).
"In the Court..." is their most accessible (leaving out "Moonchild")
in the sense that if you like ELP, Yes, early Moody Blues, this album
is not a huge leap. "In the Wake..." is a similar, but they are
starting to take more risks ("Cat Food").
KC == Fripp + whoever, and it changes every album. Fripp can wail when
he wants to, no question. For a real barn-burning example, get Brian
Eno's "Here Come The Warm Jets" (meaning left as an exercise for the
reader) and listen to "Baby's On Fire."

"Baby's on Fire"... I *LOVE* that frackin' tune. Check out the 801
version of it sometime. Man, I *LOVE* that frackin' tune... oh,
did I mention... I *LOVE* that frackin' tune...
ANYWAY... KC are wonderful. I'm not sure whether Karen is saying
that those of who listen to KC need to get out more often or those
who aren't aware of them need to... but just last night, my CD
player spun Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, Morphine, King Crimson,
an old Gentle Giant album (Octopus) and a Jaco Pastorius era
Weather Report album (Heavy Weather). I get out just fine, thanks...
:-)
Just a couple weeks ago, I saw King Crimson at the Orpheum in Boston.
Current KC members include Adrian Belew (check out his solo stuff
and his stuff with "The Bears") and Bill Bruford (Yes) -- who
is one of my favorite drummers on planet earth -- as well as Tony
Levin, who is both a friend and the single greatest influence on
my own bass/stick playing. Tony's other well-known gig is with
Peter Gabriel, although he's also played with the "sub-Yes"
(Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe), Pink Floyd (on the Momentary
Lapse of Reason album), Peter Frampton (!!), the Eggs, Robbie
Robertson (ex-The Band) and a host of others.
The new KC album wanders dangerously close to alternative rock,
and in my not-so-humble-opinion, they blow the shiite out of
any of the Pearl/Jizz reference poseurs out there... if you
ever want to see *real* players who can play something other
than 4/4 and rehashed blues scales, check these guys out...
especially live. It is mind boggling.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I *LOVE* Baby's on Fire...

Yeah, I have the 801 Live version of that... and that's not even the
best tune on that record!
Another great dangerously-close-to-alternative set of stuff was Fripp's
League of Gentlemen (*not* to be confused with his League of Crafty
Guitarists). Sara-Lee (Gang of Four, B-52's) ripps some mean bass,
but it's Fripp's guitar that kills me - he's downright *dancable*!
