1075.0. "alternatives to MTV" by WONDER::BOISSE () Mon May 01 1995 11:47

Well, I think I've finally given up on trying to record some decent
rock music videos off MTV. What a joke...

The last possibility was Headbanger's Ball, on Saturday nights at 11.

Now that's gone, and SuperRock has taken it's place. From the couple
times I've tuned in, it didn't appear to be all too super...

At 1 o'clock Saturday nights (Sunday morning) on WSBK TV 38 (Boston),
there's a half hour show called RAGE. In a half hour, I get more decent
videos than I can get from MTV in a month. I only wish it were on for
at least an hour or so.

Are there any other music video slots on other networks/cable stations
  that are worth tuning into?

There was another that I haven't seen for awhile (Worcester cable) called
Outrageous! Unfortunately, it would air over a non-stereo cable channel,
  and sounded like s___!

  Bob

You think you have it tough?

In Canada there is a MTV equivalent called "Much Music". I don't
know about MTV, but these guys are still stuck in the disco stuff,
as well as all the small canadian groups. After all they have to
    support their own "culture".

As far as heavy metal goes, they used to have a show called "Pepsi
power hour". This show aired only once or twice a week, and now has
been replaced by another 1/2 hour show. The host is really into it, but
she probably does what they tell her to do. The shows are pretty much
dismal, with a lot of industrial-new-age-semi-metal crap that low bud
get groups seem to sneak in for airing.

Very, very seldom you get a chance to listen to Carcass, Pantera or
something like that. Mostly is the mainstream pop-metal that drives the
    almighty "$".

If this station was really commited to heavy metal, there would be
many excellent bands in Canada that would benefit from the exposure.
Some of these bands are extremely heavy metal and that's something the
general audience is starting to miss.

I guess the main concern for the TV stations is the obscenity and
the religious content of some of this type of music. Unfortunately some
people are not able to discern between what a band tries to communicate
and the real-life implications. Some of the covers and lyrics are
pretty heavy, so kids would probably take it personally and more import
    ant, seriously.

These are IMO the 2 main reasons TV doesn't drive for stuff like
    the real heavy metal.

MuchMusic had what they call "80's Weekend"
All 80's groups and vid's. Man do I feel old! In between all of the
video's they were doing timelines and giving the news items of the
year, who was hot, who OD'ed, etc....

    Kinda neat to watch though!!!

And Paully if ya really wanna feel your age, match something (that
someone in one of those videos wore) to the stuff you've got buried
in the back of your closet or that ol'trunk in the basement. I'm sure
you'll find stuff that'll make a billy goat puke. Even worse if you've
    got crap from the '70's.

Well, as an 'alternative' to MTV, MTV is coming out with a new channel.
They say it is in response to complaints that they have strayed too far
from the music into game shows, etc.

The new channel, to be called MTV2, will be starting soon and
supposedly will concentrate more on the music videos, concerts, news,
    etc.

Oh...and their major concession is that MTV2 will target an OLDER
audience. That's right...target market is age 23! That is as opposed
to their target age of 21 for regular MTV.

14 IQ maybe...

how can they differentiate between 21 and 23. Come on...

Maybe MTV2 will be like ESPN2 showing some of the real sports when the
regular channel gets too busy with their regular programming (like showing
sportscenter over and over and over and ...)
