1044.0. "KYUSS" by TPLAB::VLASIU (Sorin Vlasiu - Brussels, Belgium) Mon Oct 17 1994 05:38

This topic is for the californian band named Kyuss.
As I have read some good reviews about their latest album, "Welcome to the Sky
Valley", I decided to give it a listen.
Last saturday, after abandonning the listening of Tesla's last, I put on my
CD reader Kyuss' album.
They are a 4 men band (no keyboards) and play heavy metal which recalls
early 70 bands (Black Sabbath, Grand Funk, Blind Faith for a song).
The bass is very heavy and to better listen all the instruments you should
hear it on headphones. Great riffs, excellent drummer, fine guitars and very
good singer. As the CD cover recommends, take the time to listen without
distraction. I've listened 3 times the CD the same evening. It grows on you.
Kyuss plays clearly progressive metal but much differently than a Queensrche
or Dream Theater. All the songs on the album are fine with the best being
"Demon cleaner" and "Whitewater" (which recalls in the middle Blind Faith).
They surely deserve a listen and they are a band to watch for.
Well recommended. I'll have a listen to their previous album too.

I remember listening to their first album (Blues for the Red Sky or something like
it..). I didnt come out very good when listening to it in the car. But I guess
its the kind you really need to get into. Very heavy, lots of early 70ies feeling.
I come to think of names like Cream, May Blitz, Mountain and Grand Funk Railroad.

Doesnt Jerry Garcias son play in Kyuss??

Re. tOM

When I first put the CD in the player, I thought it was recorded with 1970
equipment/technology/style. But on headphones it becomes more and more clear.
I've seen the previous CD which you have mentionned and I'll introduce more
information after listening.
I'll look if there is any link with Jerry Garcia.

I haven't seen any Garcia name in the band. I'll introduce next time the band
composition (lead vocalist, bass, guitar, drums).
I've listened again yesterday and it's really good stuff. The singer recalls
sometimes Glenn Danzig (and even the singer from Cure, in one song). The
general mood recalls also sometime Danzig's 'Lucifuge' album.
Although the sound is a bit 'special' I highly recommend to check their CD
if you have the occasion.

1044.5Blues for the red sunTPLAB::VLASIUSorin Vlasiu - Brussels, BelgiumMon Nov 07 1994 02:068
Well, this weekend I've listened 'Blues for the red sun' and it's excellent.
These guys have really much personality and look like a continuation of the
early '70ies trends. The album is practically as good as their latest. I have
also listened a bit from their first album 'Wretched' which was also very good.
Kyuss deserves more and more listening.

Sorin
PS. There is a John Garcia in the band and he's the lead vocalist.

These guys are produced by Chris Goss, formerly of Masters of
    	Reality.

I have "Welcome to Sky Valley" in the Duster's changer, but I
haven't listened to it yet. Maybe I'll skip the next few and
listen to that one next ... probably tomorrow.

They have 3 albums that I know of.
