| I think I'll try this again. I wasn't paying atention well enough last
time. I apologize to those of you I blinded or defened or whatever.
But since their are so many funny people in this note I will try to
restate what I said.
But first I want to know if every one in this conference dislikes
grunge, cause thats what it seems like. The main aspect of grunge is
that its relaxed. The style of music and dress is all individual.
As far as the music goes it is all not about Nirvana style hard
distorted rock with a screaming maniac at the mike. I know that
Nirvana is realy not that good and since it was the first mainstream
grunge band it has distorted the grunge image. Grunge is much broader
than Nirvana. The best place to start is Pearl Jam. the group has
managed to put more meaning into rock n' roll. Since the early
seventees rock has lost much of the style and meaning it once had. the
music of Led Zepplin, Lenard Skynard, CCR, the Doors and lots of
classic rock is very big in the grunge scene. On the heels of Pearl
Jam came Alice and Chains with a more heavy metal sound. Since then STP
(Stone Temple Pilot) has managed to come in some where between the two.
Softer styles of grunge rock has been brought out by Blind Melon and
Smashing Pumkins. Grunge has also taken off from the alternative scene
taking in much of its music. REM, 10,000 Maniacs. The suttle sounds of
the Samples and Big Head Todd have added another style to grunge. The
most recent big band to enter the scene is Tool with a heacy bass
guitar and incredible videos. The music that is part of the grunge
scene is not all rock, and that wich is can range from Metalica to
Smashing Pumkins.
As far as clothing goes that can be very diferent from person to
person. Shoes, sneakers, tevas, berk's, boots, steel toes, military
boots. What ever you want. The main requirements are comfort and earth
tones. Flannel t-shirt and jeans with a pair of tevas is a typical
outifit, and very comfortable. Bright colors like pink purple, royal
blue, fire engine red, are not seen. Because of the dark earthy colors
most people think of the clothes as dirty and old. If you go to a surf
or skate store you will see lots of new clothes that are very drab and
earthy. The most common clothes are made by stussy, Rusty, and
Bilabong. Some people do go far and shop at thrift and goodwil stores.
Only becuase they find comfortable clothes that have good earthy
colors. Grunge chooses comfort over tight jeans and leather mini
skirts.
As far as the movie singles goes I wouldn't consider it a bible for
grunge. It is just a good look into the life of a few people in the
grunge scene. Each has their own life style and style, but all are in
the grunge scene. The music shows the range that the grunge scene
encompases, ranging from Jimmy Hendrix to Paul Westerberg. It is more
of a Cliff Notes for the Grunge Bible. I am not saying that you should
make a strong point of watching the movie just so you are hip to what
grunge is all about. But if you are interested it is also a very good
movie. Bridgette Fonda is hot as usual.

| I would consider Smashing Pumkins somewhat alternative grunge. It is
based in grunge stylye but is much softer. I can't wait to see them at
lala. I am glad some one in here likes grunge. It seemed to me that
every one was in this note just to knock it.
AS far as groups like Sm Pum and Janes go i feel that they are not
realy grunge rock. I think the Grunge rock movement has led to the
popularization of more music. Examples would be Sm Pum, Big Head Todd,
The Samples, and unfortunately Beck. Since the grunge style has led to
the growth of many new styles of music that it would be easiest to
consider them grunge since grunge followers are often the main
listeners. Also if we considered each group diferently we would end up
with atleats 20 diferent styles.

I diddn't like grunge at the beginning. It had too much "Its not my
fault I'm so screwed up" kind of lyrics. (I believe you can overcome
anyhing as long as you really want to.) Lately My girlfriend has been
trying to coerce me into listening to more grunge. I really hated Pearl
Jam because they were seriously overplayed. Since they are easing up
on the number of Pearl Jam tunes they play, I'm starting to like them
more.
I do like the Pilots and A n'C. It's a little harder for me to get
into Smashing Pumpkins and some of the others because they are not
metal enough for me. I am still a Metallica (I'm playing Garage Days
right now), Pantera, White Zombie, Megadeth, ect.ect. kind of guy.
I still cant stand 10,000 Birkenstocks or Fuente. Gag. I am going to
go off if I hear that "The more you ignore me" song.
" She loves me she hates to be alone, She dont eat meat, but she sure
like the' bone! " -excellent tune.

1008.50 | Music Classification 101 - by Greg House | GOES11::HOUSE | Aren't you glad I asked? | Wed May 25 1994 13:30 | 20 |
| Personally, I tend to think of Pearl Jam as something akin to "Grunge
Lite", it has some slight resemblance to it, but it ain't it. STPs
fall into that same category for me. Tad, Mudhoney, or Bleach-era
Nirvana are what I'd call original "grunge", all that stuff that
Sub-Pop put out in late-80s/early-90s. I think of grunge as "modern
punk". Not quite hardcore, but close.
Nevermind wasn't all that much grunge in my mind either. It's pop
songs with a buncha distortion in every other song section and an
singer who's outta key most of the time.
Guess you could call bands like AiC or Tool "grunge", but my
description of groups like that would be "Alternative Metal", if I had
to put a label on it.
Personally, I tend to have two classifications of music. "What I
Like", and "What I Don't Like". If it falls into the former, I listen
to it.

| Sorry Led Zeppelin, & Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Personaly I don't like Skynyrd all to much, but i do love Zeppelin the
Doors, CCR and lots of other CLASSIC rock n' roll. I never said that
they were grunge. all I said was that they are liked in the grung
scene. As far as this group not being or being grunge, it all depends
on where you draw the line. To say that a band does sound like Nirvana
or Pearl Jam so it is grunge, or it doesn't so it isn't is very
acurate. Like I said if we try and label every style we will have at
least twenty labels. Alternative, alt grunge, grunge, grunge metal,
alt metal. We all consider G n' R, Aerosmith, and Metalica to be
metal, but I can easily pick each band out from the sound. They each
have their own sound, but they are all metal. As far as Tool and A n,
C they both have metal sounds, but are still "muddy". It is realy hard
to draw the line. It is a very individual thing, I think this is grunge
and you don't. As far as being relaxed, i didn't mean the music, all
though some of it is. (Smashing Pumkins, Big Head Todd) I just mean
that the style and the scene is relaxed. Just because every one likes
to go to concerts and have a good time and thrash around doesn't mean
it isn't relaxed. Everyone goes to have fun they relax let loose and
have a good time. Most people are very laid back(possibly because all
the bowls they smoke) and this is partly why the dress is so loose and
drab. Also styles can vary widely and no real set lines are drawn.

Ummm....actually I don't consider either Aerosmith or GnR to be
"metal". I'd call them "rock" or "hard rock". The better Aerosmith
stuff I'd be inclined to call "classic rock" these days. Those dudes

| That is what I have been trying to say. We can't classify all music
under definite types. One person may feel this is this and that is
that, but someone else may disagree. This has been hard though because
people keep throwing it back in my face saying that they think this is
that and that is this. I think the only good way to do it is I like it
or I hate it. The local classic rock station plays some U2, some of it
recent. I definetely don't consider it Classic rock but someone must.
They never play metalica or even much Aerosmith. If Aerosmith isn't
classic rock what is. I am not sure of exact numbers but haven't they
had like 13 records in the last 14 years, or something like that.

| Yes yes another COMET noter.... maybe its this place but I'd have to
agree that there are lots of different meaning to the word "grunge" and
to try and define it by giving examples of the types of songs in this
type of music is probably the most difficult way of defining it. It
seems to me that this is VERY subjective to whether the person likes
grunge and whether they like the artist. If a persone doesn't like
grunge then it is most likely that that music they don't like ends up
being put into this catigory. If they like it its "rock" or
"alternitive".
Grunge is the combination of different ideas and people. They don't
nessarily have to agree. all they have to do is talk. This "whole"
note is IN the grunge seen because it is the open expression of ideas
and information.

I think that Pearl Jam, Blind Melon, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice IN
Chains, Nirvana, Metallica, Soul Asylum, Lenny Kravitz, who I went
to see last November (and who was totally amazing!!) are probably some
of the best bands I've ever heard. I may be young and missed out on
the 60's and half of the 70's (although I did grow up with it, as my
dad was a DJ), but I think that people should give any kind of Rock and
Roll a listen, before describing it as rubbish, the kind of music with
synthesisers being punched at, at all times is crap, but at least the
bands that I like play guitars, play the drums the way they should be
played and have vocalists that sing without being dubbed.
So I totally agree with all "GRUNGERS"

| Well I'm around about not that old, I'm 18, 19 in about 2 weeks!
I'm from DECpark in Reading, England!
I never knew how cool it could be talking to all you "Rock and
Roll"ers out there, as there aren't that many near me!
By the way, Pearl Jam, Nirvana etc... never ever get played here
in Reading, as there are just too many Ravers and the tunes are always
charty/dancy. Not that I don't listen to that stuff, but I wish my
music could be played a bit more.

There are all kinds of music that you can be in to, Techno, Garage,
House, Dance, Swingbeat and Rave is worse than all of them!! Also
Rave has MC'ing and various records mixed in to the base tune,
techno is straight through music (ie Beeps and No singing).
I know this because my twin sister used to listen to it, but thank god
I managed to convert her into liking more soulful music such as Janet
Jackson, James Brown etc.. etc..
Hope it answered your question!!!!

| Reply:S
From what I here Pearl Jam got tired of the trouble they were having
during the tour and stopped to go back and make a new album.
While in Boulder Colorado they encountered alot of trouble. The
first night Security was very bad and rough with people in the pit.
The second night Eddie Veder stopped the show to bitch out security for
the treatment. The third show was canceled and rescudueled for a later
date and different location. Veder was back in town a month later for
a court date. from what I hear they had similar problems almost
everywhere and they canceled the rest of the tour.
It may be awhile before they tour again but when they do it is a
must see. They were great.
I can't wait for the new CD and I figure it will be great. I hope they
tour again soon and if I here anything I will let you know.

1008.84 | One theory floating around | DREGS::BLICKSTEIN | Light to dark, dark to light | Fri Jun 10 1994 08:53 | 13 |
| One of the theories I've heard as to why they were cancelled is that
they insisted on a capping the prices that promoters could charge
for the tickets (I heard $18).
The promoters took their business elsewhere and wouldn't book them.
Now before you go cheering PJ for trying to save you a few bucks and
jeering the promoters, you really have to find out whether the effort
to save you money included a reduction of THEIR take, or if they got
all the money they would normally get and the cap was too low for
promoters to make any money.

Tori Amos also did a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit a year or so ago.
Pretty interesting, but I liked the original version better. I haven't
heard this new version.
re: Pearl Jam
There have been several news clippings that people have posted on the
topic in the Radio_Radio conference. Bottom line is that Pearl Jam has
file an lawsuit against Ticketmaster. They claim that they insisted
that ticket prices be no higher then $18 each and service charges be no
more then $1.80 (if I remember correctly) and Ticketmaster said they
wouldn't list their tickets for that. Pearl Jam claims that
Ticketmaster conspired with major booking agencies to ban their shows
and nobody would book them because of that (gee, it wouldn't have
anything to do with them causing trouble and rather wantonly cancelling
shows or anything...now would it?)
Anyway, from what I've seen, Pearl Jam have gotten caught up in the
spoiled artist syndrome and think everyone should bow to their wishes,
no matter what they are. Now, I'm all in favor of lower concert prices
and I can't stand Ticketshafter, but I think there's more to the story
then what I've read about their lawsuit.

| Latest new on Peal Jam is that they will be filling the hole left by
Nirvana in this years La la palooza. Mtv reported this weekend that
they will be touring with the show.
As far as being in the spoiled artist syndrome that would be more like
G n' R. Pearl Jam still wants to play little halls where they can
still have a pit. Just because they have more fans doesn't mean they
should play Madison Square Garden. Why can't they play smaller places
and do more shows.

Now before you go cheering the promoters for *not* trying to save you a few
bucks, you really have to find out whether you feel the promoters
percentage of the take has already been too high for too long. That
question is technically equivalent (put another way, what makes the
status quo "correct?").
Or maybe, as a consumer in market-driven system :^), you just care that
your costs could be lower. Heck, maybe the product even increases in value
to you if you find out PJ takes more of the till. :^)
I find it interesting that PJ might be suffering from spoiled-artist
syndrome, but the promoters are just being businessmen. Do we apply
a double standard to PJ, like they should be above playing hardball in
this market game? (It takes hardball to fight a monopoly - so don't forget
to check that out accusation, too, while you are checking out if PJ are
increasing their % of the take).

| According to the article you posted in MUSIC, Pearl Jam insisted
that the fees and charges be limited to $1.80 per ticket.
I guess we each have to decide whether or not we think that's
reasonable (i.e. allows them a reasonable profit).

$1.80 is fair to me.. I remember when service charges were $1.50.. They
know Pearl Jam will sell out any place they book them at and they'll
probably make a couple hundred thousand per show on just service
charges.. Whats there to bitch about??

| I went back and read my last reply and found that I didn't really state
my opinion on this topic very well. My reply made it sound like I
didn't support what Pearl Jam were trying to do with this lawsuit,
mostly because I called them "spoiled artists". I *fully* support what
they're trying to do, but I don't think it will be very successful
because of the the fact that they have a history of being difficult for
promoters and venues to work with.
I've considered the prices charged for concerts to be usery for well
over 10 years now, and the "service charges" that Ticketmaster sticks
you with are ridiculous.
> I find it interesting that PJ might be suffering from spoiled-artist
> syndrome, but the promoters are just being businessmen.
I only said half of that. The promoters are and have been profiteers
of the worst sort for a long time. I still maintain that Pearl Jam
are spoiled artists, less then professional about their business.

Add GOES11::RADIO_RADIO to your notebook, then check out note number

many people that frequent that conference think they're too commercial
