988.0. "the Macc Lads" by RAYON::CONNORR (All the lads are cheering, get the f* beers in) Fri Dec 24 1993 02:57

Anyone heard of The Macc Lads?????

Generally, they're just a bunch of lads from Macclesfield (Northern
England) who sing about going out with the lads on a Friday night for a
few beers and then off to pull some lass. A lot of their material is
original, but sometimes they may use a tune and put their own lyrics to
it, ie christmas songs, Jingle Bells etc

    Albums so far:
    	The Beer Necessities
    	From Beer to Eternity
    	Beer, Sex, Chips and Gravy
    	Live at Leeds
    	Bitter, Fit, Crack
20 Golden Crates (Greatest hits album)

    Song titles include:

    	Sweaty Betty
    	2 Stroke Eddy
        Lady Muck
    	Uncle Knobby
    	Dan's underpants
    	Alcohol
    	Barrels Round
Beer, Sex, Chips and Gravy (My fave)
    	and many, many more...
I've also seen them in concert a couple of times. They're usually a
riot. Basically anything goes. when your pint gets near the bottom,
just lob it at the lads. They get gobbed on as well and he even tastes
it sometimes. Disgusting or what! Theres usually a good couple of punch
ups as well to get everyone going.
You guys stateside have probably never heard of them so to give you a
little taste heres a verse out of one of their songs:

`Cleaned me teeth, put on me best clobber
The nights the night I'm going to knob her
Vauxhall Viva's covered in rust, but you can't f* your bird on 29
bus, 1, 2, 1 2 3 4 Beer and sex and chips and gravy, is all a macc
    	lad wants'

Clobber means clothes, Vauxhall Viva is an old English car from the
    	70's.

I got as loan of one of their cd's from a guy here in
SQF.Basically, they're sexist, racist and purile and then again some of
it's really funny too! 8)On one of their songs "lady muck" they steal
the riff to "a whole lotta love".

The Macc Lads were funny on their first album Beer & Sex & Chips and
Gravy and the "Ehh Up! Macc Lads" 12" (where they did a cover of The
Monkees "Hey Hey We're The Monkees" and a brilliant version of Beer &
Sex.... using kazoos!) but since then they've just been rehashing the same
    old stuff.

Admitedly they have had their moments since the first album - Uncle Knobby,
Fat B@stard, Ben Nevis, Apprentice Dentist and Gordon's Revenge spring
readily to mind but there's only so many times you can hear the same
joke and still find it funny.

Saw them at that sweat pit called the Edinburgh Venue on the Live at
Leeds tour and they attracted quite a variety of people - metalheads,
punks, skins, goths and trendies and there were the inevitable fights
    between them.

I thought the funniest thing about the Macc Lads was that their first
album was funded by a government grant scheme that was around at the
time to set-up people in their own businesses. As they say "questions
were asked in the house" and various tory MPs demanded that the money
    be repaid!

I can just see the grant application form - We want money from you
southern p*ofs so we can make a sexist, racist, anti-gay, and
    everything-else-ist record. Thank You.

Another album released last year, about march - april, called An
Orifice and a Genital. Basically contains a few oldies and other
previously unreleased on album, although they were released on EP.
songs like Baggy Anne, Knutsford and a few others. Not bad. Knutsford
is a cover of Tina Turner's Nutbush City Limits.
Anybody know if they are still going? I've not heard anything from them
    for ages.

The Lads are one of my fave bands, but unfortunately they're no
more. They split up a couple of years ago, though Mutley and Al O'Peesha
continued gigging as `The Macc Lad' until Mutley got bottled at a gig
in Wales (claiming to be brain damaged, but this may be a typical
exaggeration)

They have another LP waiting to come out sometime, `Ale House Rock',
and their back catalogue is being released on CD by Dojo Records,
so that'll keep me going for a while, but there'll be no more tours :(

One of them recently got married to a fairly famous actress...whose
    name totally escapes me know.

So I would guess that`s the end of that. Your street wise cred probably
goes a bit, singing about shagging birds and drinking 20 pints of
Newcastle Brown when you have to stay in with the missus and pay the
    mortgage.
