946.1 | Heard | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Son of Spam | Tue Apr 27 1993 13:57 | 8 |
| I heard a song by this band on the radio a week or so ago and thought
it was pretty interesting. Sounded a *lot* like Jane's to me,
especially in the production style.
Don't know if I'll get into the band as much though 'cause a big part
of what I liked J's_A for was Dave Navarro's guitar playing.

like Jane's...a friend saw it on MTV's Alternative Nation last week...I
missed it :(.....I can't wait to get the CD...

| I can't see that PfP's new guitarist wouldn't be really good... why
scrap Navarro for someone that isn't at least as good?
Can't wait to hear the new stuff... Brian... buy it, will ya?
|
946.4 | | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Son of Spam | Tue Apr 27 1993 14:43 | 13 |
| I don't think it was a question of scrappin Navarro, he and Perry
apparently had a big falling out. See the Jane's topic, someone posted
a rumor about what caused it. Plus Navarro supposedly went into rehab
after the last Lollapalooza tour they did, that could have had
something to do with it too.
There's a little short article on the new PfP guitarist in the most
recent (June) issue of Guitar Player. He sounded real humble. Said
he'd rather the band had proven themselves before getting onto the
Lollapalooza tour this year instead of being there by default 'cause
Perry had started the thing.

This months Spin covers PfP. Quite interesting in a few ways.
The bassist Martin LeNoble is from the Netherlands (or something),
the guitarist is Italian and the drummer is Steven Perkins (Ex-Janes).
I was disturbed (I don't know why) by the fact that Perry drives a
LEXUS!!! Yech!
The cover art (as usual, from a Perry led group) is controversial.
It's a Star of David with a Swastika inside??? Some sort of Indian
or Buddist symbol or...
I'm sure they can be the life of a party, but then again, so can't I.

well... this is my .02 worth on the band so far... i didn't buy
the album yet, but i will pick it up tomorrow whilst at the rmv
in framingham... i went in to see PfP at the avalon about three
weeks ago. they were one of the headlining acts for the aids
benefit/block party that was held on landsdown st...
all i could say was.... MORE!!!! the early statement from perry
that PfP was not gonna sound like JA is a very big fat lie...
aside from a little less notchy guitar and a smoother bass these
guys are JA (imho)... not much has changed... the music is still
very moody/funky/metal/slicing/dramatic/mysterious, and as always
the lyrics make you look at perry and say... "man, he is a strange
bird but his words really make you ponder about life..."
i see no fault with the current string pluckers... except that
the bassist, martyn le noble, could use some dental work. his
stature kind of bugged me too while thinking of eric a... eric
would loom over the bass and really control/beat the hell out
of it... martyn kinda just leans back with a cigarette in his
mouth and slaps/plucks away... kinda looked like he belonged in
the stray cats or something... but once i got over that he was okay.
pete distephano is no dave navarro... but then again, why should
he be. he fits perry's music fine with his own surf band sound.
once i got into his playing it was all fine to me.
i must admit one thing... and i think it's gonna be a tag that
will follow this band... at times during the set i did pretty much
block out the guitars on either side and focus on perry and
stephen perkins and say to myself... "ahh... finally some new JA"
but i have a feeling i won't be the only person doing that.
as a side note... to me... perry is to lyrics as george carlin
is to jokes... carlin has my sides splitting while i am laughing
my ass off, almost all of his jokes are magnificent... reason
being most of them are of real life... as are perry's lyrics.
the boy has seen some strange ways on the streets of l.a.
anyway... the set that i saw PfP play was awesome... i can't give
any song titles cuz i didn't know any of the material going into
the show... (talk about a blind date from hell....) but they
played a short (~35 min) set with no JA material. crowd was
total-nutso and enjoying the new material.
biggest highlight/downer was stephen perkins warming up on drums
and pounding out some of the intro to 'ted... just admit it'.
he did just enough for the crowd to notice, then with a big
smile on his face he stopped.... :(
i can't wait to get the lp tomorrow... if no one else does so
first i will post a review...
/b
ps - yes master minardi... i will make you a tape...

Well I bought the disc last night and after one listen I have
no regrets. The bass is a little heavy/muddy but that's no
problem. Short disc (~39 min), hard to decipher the meaning of a
few songs but easy to decipher others. Perry's voice makes the
disc. I personally like the idea that the group doesn't think its
a supergroup and I get the feeling they don't want to be. That
feeling comes from the performance at Avalon and the general
promotion (or non-promotion) of the group/disc.
Note - I mentioned earlier that there is a symbol called a Yantra
that is a Star of David with a Swastika inside. I can't seem
to find it on the cover, but they say it's there.

P.S. You can tell Farrel/Perkins have worked together before.

I heard two tracks off it on the radio last night and enjoyed them a
lot. Drag that the disc is so short though...

| I have to agree exactly about Perry's voice.
He doesn't have a great voice, but it's got a
strange vibrato, I think that's the correct word
to describe it, anyway, whatever-the-**** it is,
his voice on this disc is extremely cool, just
like on Mountain Song.
I think he had some fun naming the songs.. a little
double entendre to intrigue/anger people, such as
Blood Rag, Packin', Cursed Female, Orgasm, Black Girlfriend, etc.
My only complaint is there ain't enough music on the
disc.
For the person that was pissed because Perry drives
a Lexus, check out the song Cursed Male, which says that
OLD guys don't have fun with their money, to drive fast
cars fast, and turn on women, etc.
It's easy to think of Perry as selling out, but actually,
if he was, that would just add to the art of his whole existence as
a celebrity. What could he drive that would seem to fit
his image better?

Does that mean that he's one of the cursed males or not?
A mint VW bus, that's what I picture him in.
Also for those interested Perry and his ex-girlfriend co-directed
a picture called "The Gift" that's basically an autobiographical
tale of life on the streets in LA or something like that...due out
the end of this year...done on a 350K budget...sounds interesting.

yeah... gift was suppossed to be out last spring... after some
footage from the first lollapalooza was to be added. perry has
had trouble with bringing 'gift' out of the vault because there
are some appearances by ice-t in the film and perry was working
with time-warner at the time and they were giving him a bunch
of shite because of there own falling out with ice-t... other
'legal' things made it tough too because part of the film is
a JA segment... and we all know how they get along now... and
the fact that perry down plays JA whenever he can so PfP can
emerge from the shadows... i read in either rollingrock or
spit that the film would be show first at festivals (lolla 93?)
and then meybe some exposure at theaters (b-film...).
should be interesting... kinda hope it hits VHS as well...

RE - "The Gift"
Now I remember! Wasn't Perry locked in a hotel room for days
after Lolla 91 editing footage when a housekeeper got a peek in
and saw the camera equipment? She proceeded to tell the proper
authorities that she thought there was some porn being shot or
something like that!

| I saw the PFP 'Cursed Female' video on Alternative Nation last night..
I only caught the last half, but it's pretty interesting...all I saw
was some dude going around smoking cigarettes giving prostitutes (both
men and women) money...he meets up with other guys holding out bills in
front of their crotch and undoing their zippers......hmmmmm...I had
the song in my head the rest of the night and all morning......

It's about this young guy, in his early 20s, who goes out at
