922.0. "The next generation (and I don't mean Star Trek)" by NEWOA::DALLISON () Fri Feb 05 1993 03:05

Been thinking about this... the next generation of music.

In the 60's young people were listening to The Rolling Stones, The
Beatles, Hendrix etc.. and their parents were sitting there on the fence
telling the young people off and basically saying how bad that awful
loud music was and that it was offensive and led the youth astray...

Most of the music from what I've heard was pretty harmless stuff (most
of the Beatles songs up to the Seagent Peppers days were pure pop
songs) and the only really issue was the sexual innuendo's which
weren't exactly explicit and the drug experimentation thing, which
again, was only implied indirectly. Also I guess worth considering is
the peace related stuff, but they were all to f***ed out of their head
on blow to really get up and fight anyway ;^)

Those same youths from the 60's are now the parents of todays
generation and THEIR children (ie, me) are now listening to todays
popular music and the whole thing has continued. My parants used to bitch
at me about playing my music too loud and that I should get my hair cut
just as their parants did in the 60's (if I still lived with them then
they would still be doing it to this day).

Now, my point is this :-

Todays music is so much more explicit than the 60s. Axl Rose is saying
f*ck every other minute, Slayer are singing about satanism (not
implied, just wam bam thankyou mam good old wholesome devil worship),
Ice T is advocating killing Police and WASP's album cover shows a woman
being raped by a large dog.

Given that I'm very likely to listen to my music when I am a father ( if
I'm not already ;) ) of a teenager, what on earth can the music of the
NEXT generation do to be even more offensive than the CURRENT generation ?
I know music doesn't (shouldn't) have to be offensive but it seems to be
a trend that parants always find something to bitch about their kids
music and I dare sare in x years time my music of my children, in time
honered tradition, will p*ss me off too !!

Can you imagine being sat there with your pipe and slippers on
listening to "I used to love her, but I had to kill her" or "F*ck like
a beast" etc.. telling your child to turn their music down and do their
    homework!

Your concerns are legitimate, Tony. I said the same thing in here a
few months ago (during a similar thread). Art follows life and life
    isn't improving.

I think the things that we will see in the future (if we last that long)
are: totally uncensored concerts. The language, nudity, and even
satanic rituals and healings on stage.

Actually, a lot of younger kids that I know listen to rap, which just
grills their parent's buns. I hear parents going on and on about how
    "it isn't music".

Gee...and I remember my parents saying exactly that about the hard rock
    music I listened to.

I think rebellion is the thing, it doesn't necessarily have to be more
    outrageous, just significantly different.

My prediction? It's beyond me, we'll see how it goes...

Are you people too old to remember what being a teenager was like (ok
except Chris who's still waiting for puberty to hit :) )! It *has* and
will *always* be part of the cycle of life to go through a rebellious
stage!! I don't care how strict or lenient your parents were, once you
hit a certain age and are *naturally* trying to break free and show
some independence, you want to *do*, *listen*, *believe* in things that
will totaly irritate or repulse your parents.... it is just simply a
way of showing them and the rest of the world that you're your own
person! Consequently the things we have loved and enjoyed through our
growing process (that our parents didn't approve of) our children have
to 'one up' so to speak!
                            Rat

Too old ? Naa, I'm 22 and despite my note in .0 am not a fuddy duddy
prude and am as rebelious as the next guy but music does seem to be
getting progressivley (sp?) more offensive and I just wonder where its
    gonna go next.

15 years ago the word 'bollocks' was considered outrageous but nowadays
even the likes of Paul "my wife can't sing" MaCartney is getting his
wrists slapped for saying 'f**k' seven times in a song !!

I didn't think my note sounded like that. Rebellion is definitatly the
teenage thing. My parents still hate the music I listen to, now more
then ever, most likely (except that they never have to hear what I
    listen to now).

She's gotcha pegged there, Chris. Don't worry, your secret is safe
