Sell-Out: Directing, or making compromises towards, mass acceptance
and appeal.
This can go for music or anything. One can "sell out" their moral
values imho.

artist personally (like Chris and Nuno). Many artists unknowingly are
influenced by the popular music of the day.

Yet, Metallica WANTED to do this album. It wasn't Bob Rock's idea.
It wasn't the record company;s idea. They felt the direction they
were going in was getting repetitive. So they slow down their music
for a heavier groove.
You're contradicting yourself, Greg.

You sure about that? It sure seems to be massive departure from their
previous stuff, doesn't make a lot of logical sense to believe that
they really *wanted* to do it that way. Sure, that's what someone like
that two-faced Lars Ulrich will CLAIM to the media, but I'm not sure I
believe it.
...and I probably should have added something to that definition about
abusing fans to make a quick buck (like with massively overpriced
special edition box sets and what have you).

Why is it so hard to believe they wanted to change directions?
I've heard all the demo tapes from the first time Lars and
James sat down to first record these songs, and they sound
relatively the same.
But it really doesn't matter. Sell out or not. Still the best
band in America. (In My Opinion)

| WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING
This may get a bit too serious and "deep".....
I've been thinking about this 'definition' of sellin out that we've
been arguing about and all the other arguments that get started by it
(i.e. changing of stwho roolz, ect.). Music like art are meant to be
personal interpetations both by the artist and reciever of feelings
(love, hate, melencholoney, fear, ect.) and come from or reach one's
soul. So agreeing that none of us really know wether an artist/band is
thinking/feeling we can't say if they've sold out or not. But our
perception of them may feel somehow 'betrayed' if they've changed
they're style, took a personal favorite song and sold it for a
commercial product, or now too many people like them and you can no
longer call them your own.
Just something to think about!

| Does anyone in here think the tune "Stick it out" from "RUSH" (off the
Counterparts Disc) was a sell out tune??? It was the first tune they
made in a long time with out synths' (or very little) and many people
convicted them of selling out because it was during the "grungy" era of
rock.
I think the tune is cool and it sounded like their old stuff so I don't
think it was a sell out! IMO
J, Just curious!!!

I don't think they sold out then, but awhile back. Trust me, I still
love this band, been listening to them since mid/late 70's! Seen em 3
times in concert (best for me was '79 in Boston and '80 in Milwaukee).
I really don't think they "sold out" BUT it could be construed with
their musical changes from awhile back....probably after Hemispheres
timeframe. Especially since they certainly started getting a LOT more
airplay back in those days (though not near as much nowadays, single
here, single there....). If you like them, you like them no matter
what they do (unless it was a really drastic change).

| "Sell Out" is a term used by frustrated fans who are upset that their
idols have moved on musically and are not doing the same old thing. It
means nothing to the artists, who are probably sick of the same old
thing anyway.
