There a band that reminds me of a cross between sanctuary and
fobiden.
I like um.I dont think there to popular though which is good
because when a band gets to popular there focus and influences change.
Though there are some exceptions, few but some...

I just got Burnt Offerings by them. Kind of Epic Doom metal. Heavy
guitar and drums, Shane may like the double-bass work....but then
again, he is a van halen-weenie! ;-)
So far this sounds ok, I just haven't had time to give it a undisturbed
listening at a decent volume!
How many cd's do they have out? Anyone have a discography on them?

Been spinning this one at home/in the car since the changer is fixed
and back in action. I like this disc (note 904.3). Some serious
double-bass on the drums. I think they have the main singer and a
background singer. Very heavy and they have I think 3 releases out.
Some faster stuff, some slower stuff, a little classical guitar (I
think its a classical one he plays). Not a bad choice and it is growing
on me. I like the first track of it, which I believe is the title track
to that release, Burnt Offerings.

904.5 | The Dark Saga, VERY good concept of "The Spawn" | SUBSYS::MSOUCY | | Mon Aug 12 1996 08:32 | 26 |
|
Been listening to their latest release now for a few days. Title is
"The Dark Saga" and is about the comic book character "The Spawn" which
is a very good comic (I stopped reading this a while back for other
reasons), very dark storyline. The CD seems to follow it pretty well
from what I can remember of the storyline of Spawn. Cool cover artwork
of The Spawn too! I don't know what has happened to The Spawn since my
last reading of it (issue 14 was my last in collection which I sold).
They have for releases:
Iced Earth
Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider
Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings (excellent, Dante's Inferno 16mins long!)
Iced Earth - The Dark Saga
Different bassist in band and I think a different drummer from last
release. They seem to change some musicians with every release. No idea
why (nothing mentioned in a.r-n-r.metal.heavy in the newsgroups). I
hope they can continue with this line of music and style! Good stuff if
you like your music on the heavier side (not black/death metal).
Worth a listen anyways! Production is very good, not as heavy sounding
as Burnt Offerings, but at least as good quality-wide. YMMV.

Yup, that is the one, and only! I would've liked a better layout, more
of him, but it is cool enough though! That would be a wicked tatoo! I
was thinking about that awhile ago, but then got to thinking about all
the red in his cape!....so I decided not to get a spawn tat...yet! Cool
story line though! And Violator was pretty bizarre!

One word for "The Dark Saga" by this band...
EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!
I've been spinning this for awhile now in the car and it does follow
the story line of "The Spawn" quite a bit. Good emotions throughout the
songs, good structure, good riffs, etc...I like it as much as their
last release "Burnt Offerings". I may try and get "Night of the
Stormrider" to see how much they have progressed.

| Shaun, get "The Dark Saga", their latest (and which contains "I died
for you"). I think you should like it. It's one single story
through all the album songs. Melodic, powerful and emotional.
"Burnt Offerings" is equally excellent. Same singer, a little bit
heavier, no weakness (BO contains also the 15+ mins "Dante's Inferno",
a great track). Both albums deserve high recommendations.
"Night of the Stormrider" is also very good but overall I still prefer
TDS and BO.

PS. You who like QR, Savatage etc., should also check for Stratovarius
(Episode is their latest and probably their best to date) and Conception.

There really isn't a bad song on the album and it moves through

904.25 | Days Of Purgatory | AXPLAB::VLASIU | Sorin Vlasiu - Brussels, Belgium | Fri May 16 1997 10:07 | 17 |
| Great initiative from Iced Earth ! As they currently have one of the
best heavy rock singers around (Mathew Barlow) and based on the success
of the last two albums (The Dark Saga and Burnt Offerings both with
Barlow) they released a double CD containing most of their two initial
CDs. All songs are remixed and the vocals are done this time by Barlow.
So you get almost all of Iced Earth (first album) and Night Of The
Stormrider plus few different versions of songs contained on Burnt
Offerings (the title track and Dante's Inferno, their most complex
song). 21 great metal songs (one CD has 46+ minutes and the other
around 70 mins, I think). All in a double digipack good for collector's
items (the artwork is also inspired from some comics series).
I know Night Of The Stormrider (very good) already but the versions on
this CD sound much better for me.
If you enjoyed one of their two last CDs, then grab this one without
hesitation. Highly recommended !

Sorin,
From your comments I assume this double CD is awesome? Are there
any songs from The Dark Saga on it? I already have that and wouldn't
want to end up with 7 or 8 songs repeated on this new album?
If all the songs on the double CD are from their debut album and
Night of the Stormrider this sounds like something I will buy. As
it stands right now I've never heard any of their songs/records besides
TDS and I'd like to get some exposure to their earlier stuff.
Especially with the singer from TDS doing the vocals....I like him
as a very heavy rock singer.

No, there are no songs from TDS on Days of Purgatory. There are only
two or three versions of songs from Burnt Offerings. And .. the price
of the double CD was that of a normal full priced CD !! 39.99 DM in
Germany and 795 belgian francs here (promotional price). I had to wait
a bit to have mine as it had sold out very quickly each time.
It was released by Century Media.

Looking forward VERY MUCH to hearing Winter's stuff as I hear it is

maybe Ceremonium or Mythological Cold Towers (heard good things about
the latter).....Check out Dark Symphonies at:

| The remixes are excellent. I have compared the original "Night of the
stormrider" with the new remixes and the latter are better. It may
depend if you have heard first TDS or earlier works (which I think it's
the case with the guy which had some reserve on the new remixes). If
you like TDS and BO, then you will surely *love* this one.
They have taken care that vocals fit with the old interpretations and
as I've said already, Mathew Barlow is one of the best singers today.
The 2nd CD includes 4 songs (different versions) from BO. There are
also on the two CDs few unreleased songs (also excellent).
One of the best buys for me !

Re: Days of Purgatory
I have a feeling that this is not available on this side
of the pond yet. I checked Newbury Comics in Nashua and
in Framingham and they had not heard of it....the Iced
Earth bin at both stores was also empty :-( I also talked
to this guy I know at Strawberries in Milford and when I
asked him if they carried the new IE disc he said they did not
have any copies of "The Dark Saga" in. So he was not aware this
album existed (and it wasn't on his special order list either).
Anyone know of a place where I might be able to order it on-line???
I've been listening to TDS an awful lot lately and it's really growing
on me...."Violate" being my favorite song. Nice & heavy!

Yo CF,
I just checked at CDNow and CD Connection and neither are showing it as
of yet. Maybe directly from Century Media (WWW.CenturyMedia.Com)? I
*hope* I come home today to my 2 discs from CDNow, Anathema "Pentecost
III" and Edge of Sanity "Infernal". I just found out the Winter disc
"Into Darkness" is out of stock, so that's one I won't be seeing
anytime soon, unless I order it elsewhere if I can find it on another
label/store.
Best bet would be to try Century Media's web page and see what they
have to say, they will have it cheaper if they do also! But keep in
mind to use Money Orders with them, personal checks they sit on for 3
weeks then process it, then 4-6 weeks for shipping! I know, I went
through that last year! No online ordering, yet.

I think I've seen somewhere in a news group that DoP was to be released

Days of Purgatory is currently available *only* in Europe
and is scheduled for release in the US sometime in July.
There website is pretty cool, and I definatly like the album
cover for D of P!!! Check it out.
Also, FWIW, they just ended (May 18th) a European tour and will
be in the US on June 26-29th playing at Atlanta's Sci-Fi Expo
called DragonCon.

May 20th was the release date according to whom? The Metal Release List
is seldom correct, as release dates change all the time. Anyway, the
U.S. will most likely not get the same double disc set that Europe got,
but that same set will still be available directly from Century Media for
only $20. However, that won't be available yet for several weeks.
But to keep all the great American fans sated, Iced Earth will soon be
performing live in their own country! There will most likely be a show
in Milwaukee on June 20th, and possibly one in Chicago the next night.
Then they're playing DragonCon in Atlanta the weekend after that. The
midwest shows aren't cast in stone yet, but I should have some definite
information in a couple days, which I'll post here.
Stay tuned to http://www.icedearth.com for all the latest...
