   	Band History:

	Mystic Powers is comprised of seasoned veterans who have been 
	active in the New England music scene for the past four years. 
	The four peice band is based out of Worcester MA. Mystic Powers 
	writes and performs all  original  material.  The  music  has
	many influences such as very early Metallica, WASP, and Motor
    	head, combined with progressive influences such as Iron Maiden.  
    	The band plays their music fast and heavy and has a contantly  
    	growing list of original material as well as selected cover 
    	material.



   The Cr�e:

	Steve Garry - Bass guitar. 
	Steve's a veteran of the Massachusetts music scene.  Formerly 
	of Valraven,  he's played numerous clubs throughout Worcester
	& Boston including Sir Morgan's Cove, the Channel, Bunratty's
	and others. He's had recording experience with  Valraven  and
	Mystic Powers.  Steve write the majority of the material.  He	
	was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts.  Steve  uses
	Marshall amplification and BC Rich bass guitars.

	Peter Cook - Drums
	Peter's a veteran of the New England music scene  and beyond.
	Formerly of the Gorehounds and Golgotha,  he's played through
	out  Massachusetts,  Maine,  Vermont,  New York,  and Canada.
	He's  had  studio experience  with  the Gorehounds and Mystic 
	Powers.  He's done interviews and simulcasts on  WERS,  WJUL, 
	and WFNX. Peter contributes to lyrics and  music arrangement. 
	Peter was born in  Los Angeles, California and has a Bachelor
	of Sciene degree. He uses Tama drums and Paiste cymbals.

	Keith Poulin - Vocals
	Keith has four years experience as a vocalist, and has played
	numerous smaller venues around the  Massachusetts area.  He's
	had  recording experience  and contributes  to  the lyrics of
	Mystic Powers' songs.  Keith was born  and raised in  Clinton
	Massachusetts. He uses Shure microphones and Peavey equipment.

	John Lally - Guitar
	John has played  throughout  New England for many years since 
	the age of 16. Some of the bands he's been in include Origins,
	Devastation,  and Under the Influence.  John has played every
	thing  from  weddings  to  thrash metal shows.  He's  a  very 
	versatile musician.  John was the final  musician to complete
	Mystic Powers. He was raised in Hudson Massachusetts. He uses 
	Marshall amplification and Jackson and Hamer guitars.

    I'm going to listen to it tonight, and if it's good, Chris will help
    me with the tape duplication. I'm just going to do some fast copies
    for H_M, and then the demo will be duplicated onto pro quality

    Mystic Powers is now accepting auditions for vocalists. We have all the
    equipment and we have ALOT of fast and heavy original material. Song 
    writing ability is not needed, the bassist and I write all the lyrics 
    and music but the ability would help obviously. We have alot of gigs 
    coming up!!!!!!!!!!!

    Well, I've got some ancient JamVac tapes ... I would dare to say that

    BTW, as if you didn't know, all songs � 1991 by Mystic Powers.
    
    I'm personally psyched about this demo because never in my musical
    history have I had so much to do with the material. Besides the
    lyrics to four out of the 7 songs, my first contribution to the
    music side of things is in the song "Invasion" which is a wicked
    thrasher of a tune. 
    
    The demo was done on a Tascam 8 track. This particular mix down
    is not the final one, so keep that in mind.
    
    On other notes, Steve has decided to keep Keith. I had someone else
    in there, and he's still interested. I want Pat (Burns) and Steve
    wants Keith. We'll see what happens.
    
    We have another tune worked out, another set of my lyrics and
    John Lally's first contribution to the music. It's the first
    love song I've ever written but it's not your typical one
    for sure! It thrashes well, and the dynamics and timing changes
    in the tune are death! 
    

    Congratulations Pete, and Buck of course.  I hope that this is the

    I istened to the tape last night.  Good work.  The recording though
    isn't the greatest.  I hope it's the stereo you used for dubbing and
    not the studio equipment's fault.  Mostly it was the volume level that
    kept changing that was the problem.

    on.

    Well, can I borrow the original to dub a good copy of for that place I
    was telling you about?  Or are you planning on doing more on a
    different machine.  I think the quality of the copy I have may give a

    Well, the gig was a total success last night. We got an incredible 
    audience response. I was amazed!! We didn't win the door money,
    but personally I'd rather be playing weekends than defending on
    Wednesday nights!
    
    Watch this space, we'll definitely be playing there again. Danimal's
    sister (who books the gigs) said we smoked!
    

    
    	Another thing...One of our friends, a wicked fan of the band
    	has come into some serious money and wants to invest some
    	serious $$$$ into the band. This could mean some sessions

    He's flexible, and extremely cool. I've been in this situation
    before when I was in Challenger and we turned that guy down 
    'cause me and Steve didn't trust him. This guy is a totally 
    different story.
    
    We definitely won't get something for nothing. He would want
    a return on his investment. 10%? 15? 20?

I never dealt directly with any financial backing stuff, but just some (maybe 
obvious guidelines):

1. Rule #1, and I'm sure you know it - never sign ANYTHING (or even agree 
   verbally to anything!) without talking to a lawyer about it. It can cost
   you $$$ now, but save you a lot more in the long run!

2. Suggestion - try to set up a pay-back of his exact investment (and have him
   carefullly document all monies spent), with an appropriate percentage 
   profit going to him. In other words, I'd rather use him as a bank and pay 
   it back at 20% interest, as opposed to signing away copyrights and stuff 
   like that (which could be worth a lot more in the long run). But then 
   again, if the band folds, you still owe money (whereas if you trade the
   copyrights for $$$, you won't lose any cash if the band folds).

3. See what he wants a percentage of - is it sales royalties? Merchandising?
   (May no be much now, but most metal bands make more from merchandising
   than from touring or album sales!) Tour/gig money? Rights to use the band 
   name? Rights to the recordings? Rights to the songwriting? In other words, 
   find out exactly and specifically what he can and cannot do, in return for 
   his investment.

   (On the same note, make sure any signing deals are exclusive to the US,
    not worldwide. You never know.....better to be safe than sorry....)

4. Is it a one-time deal, or will there be continous financial support? You'd
   hate to get cash now, then run out, and have to sign another deal for more
   cash and give up more than you already have! (Or conversely, plan on that - 
   say you don't mind giving up 50% of the roylaties in trade for finance, I'd
   say give up 25% now, and hold back 25% for future financial support.)

Just a couple points off the top of my head that I can think of. If I come up
with any more, I'll send ya mail or post them here....

    The tapes scheduled to go out were confiscated by Steve and sent 
    to clubs. This weekend I'm going to do about 20 of them. I'm picking
    them up today after work and will be doing the dubbing either
    tommorrow night or Saturday and then send 'em out. I've got
    a bunch to send out to colleges from UCLA to Nebraska to MIT
    also.
    
    It'll be a four song demo with Armageddon, Invasion, Missing You,

    Are they still doing the all ages show at the teen center in
    Burlington?

        I'll have  to  check  on  `242 Main', but there's a new place
        that just opened  up,  dedicated to REAL bands that play Rock
        (not sure if it's  18+  or  not).  The music scene started to
        get so depleted up here  that  most  bands  don't bother with
        bars anymore.  This place is  called  `KD  Churchills' and is
        where the old `Texas' bar  was.   (Was `The Red Dog' prior to
        being  `Texas'.) Their number isn't listed in the phone  book
        yet, but I'll get that one for you as well.   Apparently from
        what  the  paper  said, they're doing well for being opened a
        little less than two months.

    	Well, Pete called me Saturday morning [it's a DAMN good thing I
    	had already gotten up!!  8^)]  to tell me they had been booked
    	at the last minute for Saturday, so I kept half of my promise
    	and went to see them.  Of course, I wanted to see them anyways,
    	so it's not like I had to force myself to go.
    
    	They went on at about 9:30 or so, and started with a very Iron-
    	Maiden sounding instrumental [what was that?].  It was a very
    	good intro to a very good set.  Included were:
    
    	"Speak English or Die" - SOD
    	"Wrathchild" - Iron Maiden
    	"Armageddon"
    	"Time to Die"
    	"Uncongressional Mosh"
    
    	and others which I can't remember.  The lead singer [to me] was
    	very similar to Testament's lead singer, but I could hear a good
    	portion of the words from this guy.  The bassist was very good,
    	and seemed to hold up well even to Steve Harris' bass lines.  The
    	guitarist smoked ... his fingering was even better than Tony Cam-
    	uso's, who I used to love to watch.  And Pete did a darn good job
    	on drums.
    
    	The set was a very thrashy collection of songs.  But even though
    	it was extremely heavy, alot of the vocals could be heard, and
    	you all know how much I value that.  [And if you don't, I like
    	that very much ... it's useless to have vocals if they can't be
    	heard through the rhythm section.]
    
    	In short, go see these guys if you can.  A good collection of
    	musicians all playing together to produce enjoyable music.

    Bad Brains and Grim Reaper did albums there! The place is incredible!

    Carlisle, MA!!!
    
    IMveryHO they blow Long View totally out of the water!!  They have ALL
    the top notch equipment and good engineers to boot.  They have done
    several metal albums there, and know how to get a heavy sound.  Check
    it out, I know they price comparitvely to Long View as well.  Less $$$
    too if you do session from midnight til 6am.

    I believe they have "package rates" for extended sessions (ie,
    album projects, etc.), but one thing they don't have like Longview
    are places to crash (aka hotel rooms).  Longview is like a hotel with a
    recording studio...Blue Jay is just one serious f'in recording studio.
    BUT, since it's right on Rt. 225 in Carlisle, it's easy to come and go
    from there (a 5 minute drive from 495/110/62/and rt 27!).

    
    Oh yeah, the other cool thing about LVF is they don't charge any
    different between 16 and 24 track so we can go 24 track without
    spending more money.
    
    I'll give BJS a call and see what they charge.

    Well, fwiw I don't think Blue Jay carges any more to go from 24 to 48
    tracks!!  They have the equipment, I guess you supply the 2" tape.

    I will give my un-biased, objective, honest opinion.

    
    	I already gave you an overall review yesterday, but I'll repeat it
    	here, and add a couple comments.  After 1 listen through, the music
    	sounds good.  That is, the mix is good, the instruments sound good,
    	and you guys know how to play them.
    
    	BUT, the sound quality of my copy [and probably the rest too] is
    	not great.  Dropouts in a couple places, volume difference bet-
    	ween sides [which you explained to be caused by different record-
    	ing mechanisms].  You don't want to give a copy of this one to a
    	person who could possibly give you some exposure, because I don't
    	think you'd appreciate the publicity you'd garner from this.  [And
    	this is one of the only places where bad publicity IS bad public-
    	ity ... when you're trying to get started.  8^)]
    
    
    	And BTW - is "Missing You" on there so that you can get on the MTV
    	playlist and get all the ballad-loving teeny-boppers to buy your
    	albums?  8^)

    I thought the recording was much better than the 1st attempt.  I
    couldn't pay much attention to the songs on the 1st tape 'cause the
    poor recording was too distracting.  This time around, I've listened
    about 20 times so far.  Like I said in the mail message, I was
    impressed.  There was only one part of one song that I didn't care for
    too much.  That was when the guitarist started his lead a few seconds
    into Uncongressional Mosh (was that the name?).  The beat suddenly
    dropped off to a "drag".  My wife thought there was something wrong
    with the tape.  That may have been an intensional effect.

    Yep, it was intentional. It was my idea. It's supposed to throw ya off
    so I guess it worked. 8-)

    Overall I was impressed...I've only listened to it twice and it sorta
    grows on ya...of course Demo's NEVER do any band justice if you asked
    me.
    
    IMVVHO the only thing that really needs improvement is the vocals.  The
    drums were tight as he11 and the guitar sounded really good despite the
    quality of the recording.  I freaked on how thrashy it was...knew it
    wouldn't be poseur, but MAN!  I really like Invasion...so far it's my
    favorite tune on the tape.
    
    Ya'll will definitely benefit from writing more material...

    I think someone else already mentioned the fact that most demos never
    do the band justice, and I think that hits the nail DEAD on the head
    here.  I like the songs, but there's some serious gaps - not because
    the music/talent isn't there, it's just that it didn't make it to the
    tape.  Side 1 (with the Buckmeister) is my favorite.  The quality is
    better and Buck's style fills up a lotta holes.

    My tape arrived (thanks Pete!) yesterday and I've been listening to it
    since lunch yesterday (few times thru).  I agree with most as far as
    the tape quality and talent representation go.  I still enjoyed it
    though.  I'm not a real thrasher type, but I think I liked "Invasion"
    the best.  I got a chuckle out of "Uncongressional Mosh" too (not sure
    if that's the reaction you're looking for ;-)).  
    
    Buck sounded a little tame compared to "Fallen Angel" ;-)
    
    just kidding dude, you were playing to suit the music.

    Ok, I got my tape today, so I'll post my review...

    Overall:  Good!  Much better quality then the last tape you sent me,
    Pete.  I like the first side better then the second, but this may be
    due in a large part to the fact that the sound quality is better, but I
    also think I like the songs better.  In any case, this one is
    definitely worth quite a few listens!  
    
    I think that all the songs on side 2 should be longer, they were too
    short for me to get into 'em.  

    I think Buck's guitar sound fits the band sound better then John's.  He
    leaves more space then John and it keeps the instruments from getting
    too muddy and mushed out sounding.  

    Tell John to get a Marshall and fix his EQ.  It sounds like he's using
    nasty stomp boxes for distortion it's bassy and muddy sounding with
    kind of a smooth buzz rather then a crunch, more of a solid state kind
    of sound in my mind.  I don't mind his lead sound (except that it's not
    loud enough) but his rhythm sound needs some work IMHO.  I think he's
    got too much low freq in his sound, it's tromping on the bass.  This
    could also be helped if Steve would use a punchier sound (which I
    personally think would help on all the songs).  Steve's got an
    interesting style, it's too bad you can't hear him most of the time...

    Whatever you did to Keith's voice on "Armageddon", DO IT AGAIN!  That's
    the song he sounds best on.  He's lost in the muddy mix on side 2.  I
    think a big part of this may be John's overwhelming guitar sound.  I
    don't particularly care for his ballad singing though, he's better as a
    screamer. 
     
    Pete's drum sound was pretty well captured on all the songs, good work.

    On listening to the tape some more, the guys voice doesn't really sound
    that bad on the ballad.  I could live with it. 
    
    This tape grows on ya, I'm starting to like it more and more.  It'll be
    cool to hear this material done in a better studio with a good mix!

    It's my opinoin that a 2nd cab helps with definition!
    
    Also, the EQ thing is cool for dialing in your own lil niche in the
    harmonic spectrum.  You can also get a real heavy sound with it.

        I finally got my copy of the tape. . .my review follows. . .
        
        The first  song,  to  me,  sounded  good.   It was tight, and
        fairly clean for a four track.  I can't wait to hear what the
        24-track will do for you.
        
        `Missing You' - this song, for  some reason didn't sound very
        good.  If one is going to play harmonics on a guitar then one
        should make very sure it's in tune.   (Either  that or it was
        the  level  of  distortion  that  the  guitarist  used  while
        playing.)  Same  with  the bass, cause something didn't sound
        `in tune'.   Vocals were a little sharp and a little flat and
        right on, all at the same time.  
        
        The  other  three  songs  weren't  that  bad.     Although  I
        definitely  have to give it a few more listens  through.    I
        mean, there are things that a stock, car stereo can  lose  in
        the  EQ  that  a  home  stereo  won't.   (As well as  through
        headphones for  that  matter.)  This  is only my first review
        after three times through the tape.  
        
        Over all, I  like  it.   You guys sound good and one of these
        millenia, I want to  see  you play live.  (Which may become a
        reality if things work out ! :^))

    For some reason, the tape dropped an octave or something. Hard to

    When I went in to do the guitar OD's, I tunes to the tape in the
    studio control room.  When I got out in the studio to OD, the
    PLAYBACK was very sharp!!!  I had to re-tune, which is not a good
    thing on an Ibanez with a floyd rose!!!  Needless to say, I could not
    quite get my guitar in tune with the playback tape (too sharp), and
    my action was about an inch off the fretboard, which made trying to
    play almost impossible!!  I was not a happy camper, but sometimes that
    sh*t happens!

        You mean  that  was  BUCK-E-LEE  playing  those  harmonics  ?

    Actually I love the whole song. Especially how fluidly you did the

    This statement will sound very foot-in-mouth, but playing Iron Maiden
    songs for 10 years helped me assimilate to playing that with such ease.

    a brand-spankin-new 24tk studio.  Was there recently, tying up some
    business stuff for a project I'll be doing there.  Very competitive
    rates, excellent equipment, and they have Bob St. John working there
    (Extreme's engineer)!  I know I can't wait to get the NUNO guitar
    sound!!  ;^)

    WHEN there are no excises for a poor tape deck dub or audio
    engineer.... when you are completely happy with this demo and void of
    any  excuses as to why it might sound bad.... I wish a copy.

    just that when I head something, that's it... that's my impression and

    I'd like to thank Mark and Chris for coming down to Edible Rex last
    night. We got a realy good video taping out of it and I'm glad Mark
    and Chris got to see us [What did you think?]. I'll be checking out
    the tape tonight. We also debuted another song I co-wrote called
    Slave to Insanity. That seemed to go well.

    Had a good time!

    I thought all the songs sounded very tight, even the new one.  My wife,
    who doesn't really care for this music, liked 3 of the songs very much.
    They were that new one you did, the one about war (can't remember the
    name) and Missing you.  THat song, Missing you, I can't get out of my
    mind.  Ever since I heard it on the demo I keep finding myself humming
    it.
    The band played and looked very good last night.  I didn't care for
    some of the things the sound man was doing with the singer, but that's
    not your fault.  There were a few things I didn't like that had nothing
    to do with the songs, but had to do with the song intro's.  That bit
    about the "a lot of controversy" has to go (IMO).  People sorta
    chuckled an "Oh Brother!" type of chuckle when Kieth said that.  Also,
    the intro for the song for the troups is passe.  Everyones already done 
    it.  The song is great, forget that intro.  One more thing, let the
    singer introduce himself.  All this is just my opinion.  I have no
    negative comments about the songs.  There was a lot of precision
    between the members.  
    Like I said last night, if this was an all-ages show, we could have
    really packed the house.

    I was watching the video from Edible Rex last night. It's the first
    video where I can hear my double bass clearly. I couldn't believe it!
    Wow! It's really weird to hear something you've done. When you're
    doing it at the time everything seems in slow motion. When I saw/heard
    the tape I was happy! 8-)

    The videos that were done at Sir Morgan's Cove were done with the
    house cameras. It's mounted on the ceiling and the audio is done
    with two piezo mic's. The sound was terrible.
    
    This was done with a friends video camera. Sound was MUCH better.

    I think the cover art should be a glad bag full of reefer (about 2 oz
    worth), with a piece of masking tape on the side of the bag which reads
    MYSTIC POWERS.  You can have pipes, papers, bongs, and other assorted

    night at Ralph's in Worcester. I was talking to Mike Cramer last
    night who books the place. He loves our tape but don't have no other
    metal bands to do a metal night (it would be a Thursday). So he told
    me to find two other bands and we'll do it.
    
    SO...I need two other metal bands to do this. We could have H_M night
    at Ralph's! Jim? Mark? Anyone? What do ya say? All I need is to get
    your tapes to Mike. We can figure who wants to go on first, second, and

    Like I was saying in 99.*, I'm doing a song that is based on classical
    concepts, as far as arrangement and composition. It could, in a way
    be classified as a heavy metal symphony and I will be calling it
    Symphony #1. Instead of making it into several songs or a whole
    album, I'm going to compress it down to a 15 to 20 minute song. So
    far it has 10 to 12 different parts, and I'm only half way through 
    it. There are several themes, one for each character or certain event
    in the story that will reoccur through out the song.
    
    What do you folks think about applying metal to semi-classical structure?
    My intention is to bring metal a step forward. I want to stop writing
    all my material the conventional way (blues based arrangement-wise) and
    start basing things on a different form.

    They don't book "metal" bands, because, frankly, metal really isn't
    "in" on the boston scene.  There are very few Boston metal bands that
    even get play-time at any of the major clubs.
    
    I've seen major thrashy, punkish, grungy grinding music at TT's.  I've
    seen some pits there that would tear people apart. They aren't "pussys" 
    or wimps about their music.  
    
    They do, however, have a good handle on what kinds of music bring in
    the big $$$$, and metal isn't one of them.
    
    One thing you need to realize, Pete, is that the Boston music scene is
    very tightly woven.  Bands are booking gigs as a unit now in a lot of
    places (you'll see bands forming liasons together and playing together
    a lot), if you don't know the other bands on the scene, you don't get
    out to play very often, that's how it works.  
    
    If you want to get into the scene, you have to be IN the scene.  Who
    ARE the metal bands in Boston, where do they play, what are their
    names, do you know them, would the be willing to back you for a gig?
    
    If you expect to jump feet first into the Boston music scene with big
    gigs handed to you (like the Channel, Axis, Citi, The Paradise, etc)
    you've got a large, raw dose of reality coming your way FAIRLY fast.
    
    
    Many bands spend months and even YEARS playing the Worcester scene
    and tiny, hole-in-the-wall, no-pay-for-musicians dives before they ever
    have the backing to make it "onto" the scene to even have a chance to
    make it "big."  Don't think Mystic Powers is any different than any of
    them, Pete, because you're not.  
    
    Talent and attitude isn't going to get you the gigs, connections are. 
    
    Telling it like it is on the Boston scene..........

    BTW, now that I went into that tirade, I really should emphasize that I
    went into a tirade like that because, basically to be a strict metal
    band, and to try and get onto the Boston Scene is nigh to impossible. 
    About the only gigs you get are when major metal acts come through and
    they need an opening act to go on at 9pm when no ones even there
    anyway.
    
    Metal does NOT bring money into the clubs, on a metal night you'll find
    that most of the clubs aren't filled at all, and I rarely see strict
    metal shows even listed (the Channel is about the only place that lists
    any).
    
    TT's, Middle East, Paradise, Axis, Citi, ManRay, etc are all
    alternative, grungy, industrial, rock, ska, etc establishments because
    that's where the money comes from. 
    
    Lots of thrashy grungy groups are on the scene:  Kudgel, Red Bliss
    (sort of), Chloe, Kildren (local?), etc........  They're fast, hard and
    driving (to the point you get yourself mangled in the mosh pit), but 
    they are NOT metal.
    
    
    I'm just telling you like it is on the Boston scene.........if you're
    Metal, you've got a LONG HARD ROAD ahead of you....Metal is just NOT

    Well, I finally caught Mystic Powers at the Cove last night.  You guys
    played pretty good Pete!  Especially your drumming.  Definately the
    strongest link in the band I'd say.  The bass player was pretty tight
    too.  I can't figure out if he looks more like Noel Redding, or Eric
    Clapton from the Cream days!
    
    Your guitarist really does need to turn down the treble a bit as has
    been previously said.  It might be his distortion pedal that's causing
    that tinny sound.  I don't know what kind it was, but when he clicked
    it off it sounded more natural.
    
    The singer sounded alright.  Maybe could have used a little delay on
    his voice though.  All in all it was it was a good show I thought.

    Pete, I thought you guys sounded real good!  The guitarist's playing
    reminded me of the Ramones though - I'm not sure if thats what you
    intended?  Everytime a song began, I'm thinking, this sounds just like
    the Ramones!!  (not throughout the entire tune, of course! just
    beginnings)

    cool. we played in front of a bunch of beer guzzling bikers and such.
    The rest of the bands played Blues. We got a better response than I
    though we would from a non-metal crowd. and of course goddess of
    fdotedness was there to cheer us on!

    
    
    
    By the by..  I don't know if I mentioned this but Mystic Powers has
    some wicked jammin tunes!!  Fast and funky stuff!!  You can't even get
    a glimmer of it from the demo tape.

    were working on their new album at that time.  But, Dan Lilker left
    that band.  Now he is in Brutal Truth, I just saw B.T at Death Fest.

    I forgot to mention, we're having t-shirts made up next week or the
    week after that. John is taking care of it so I'm not sure exactly
    when.

    Well, if anyone's interested, I'll tell you about Friday night at the
    Escape Club.  The first band that went on was called SanSarra(sp).
    They were a late-teens band.  They weren't really TOO bad, but the poor
    singer had osteosperosis(sp).  It was a riot.  He kept hunching over
    and looking up in the air and moving his head around.  He looked just
    like someone pretending to be on an acid trip!  LIKE WOW MAN!!!
    
    2nd band was Mystic Powers.  They sounded just as good as the last time
    I saw them  Everything was tight and working well.  The one funny part
    was when the singer was walking around the stage, grooving to the music
    during a lead, and he stopped while standing infront of the base
    player's Marshall.  What he didn't realize was he had his microphone
    right in front of the amp speaker.  So, suddenly you heard this LOUD
    DEEP TONE blasting out from the stage!!  :^)
    
    3rd band, well, it's really too bad.  They were good, and "could" have
    been very good.  But, when they were warming up and the guitar players
    were farting around, I just knew they were going to over-power that
    place, and sure enough, they did.  They were blasting with so much
    power that there was no clarity in what they were playing.  And like I
    said, it's too bad because they seemed real good.  They were called
    Dark Ages.  They played Enter Sandman, which I really like.  Only wish
    they had "toned down" for that one.

    Last night at the Channel was an incredible success! We brought in the
    most tix of any band there, and I'm sure we'll be back. We went on
    at 9:00 and got an incredible audience response from start to finish.
    I was truly amazed! High Voltage also played (and we kicked their
    butts!)
    
    The Tocatta and Fugue in Dm intro over the PA went wicked cool too!

    I'm glad you came to a decision on Long View.  Long View is great,
    but to REALLY take advantage of it's greatness, you have to spend a
    siginificant amount of time and money there, and at a place of that

	In regards to the tickets you may want to consider handing out
	a couple of extra ones to anyone that requests them so that they 
	can either pass them on to more friends or hand them to someone 
	who might happen to be in heading in without one.

	This will further help your obviously good crowd showing count.

	As I told you in part since I had planned on going anyhow I didn't 
	want to go in without a ticket so I tried at about 8:15 to meet up 
	with you by the back door. 

	As it turned out I was talking to a friend of your guitarist who
	said he would ask someone to see if there were any more tickets.

	He was able to get some but after closer examination we found that
	we helped out another band's headcount!  Your singer, who I might
	add I wouldn't want to tangle with was jokingly calling us traders.

	It was evident by the crowd reaction that you did very well and
	as you pointed out the numbers were up there.  That's really
	good considering a relatively early start time.

	Even though I like seeing support acts it's not often that you catch 
	me at the Channel before 9:00.

	It's very good to see a live band that you're not familiar with
	who you instantly like but in your case something all along told
	me I would like your band and I did so it wasn't unexpected.
	
	I could have ribbed you but although I never got the demo I asked 
	for some time ago hearing you for the first time I really did enjoy it.

	A few replies back someone commented on how the bass player looked 
	like Eric Clapton in his early days, I was thinking along the same 
	lines, he definitely was UK rocker-like.

	I liked the guitarist, your drums sounded great but more importantly
	than individual band members is the overall sound.  The few people
	who I saw (and I stress few) I can't see how you can sit like a
	bump on a log (I hate that expression but it's best I can do right
	now) show barely any signs of life.  In the words of many performers 
	'please either hate us or love us but give some feedback'.  But then 
	again I'm the one who suggest the Orpheum rip out the first 20 rows
	of seats.

	Also as we spoke there's already enough bands who sound so much
	a like that it's nice to hear a band not in in the words of TT's 
	who called you "Scary" which still makes me laugh who were not
	just another this, that, or -what-you-call-it-type band. (fill in
	your own types.)

	I would say it's likely that not all of the crowd was there to
	see you but you and certainly not one they may have expected but 
	again apparently some of them to liked you.  I don't think you
	guess can pay of people for audience reaction.

	As for press kits and such I think you can do yourselves more justice
	by including a more adjective type description than relating yourself
	to any particular sound or another band.  Something I'm not terribly 
	good at but I think it's especially relevant when considering the 
	creative process that goes into song writing it only makes sense to 
	describe it in terms of something anyone can understand.  For bands
	who's goal it is to sound/mimic someone else it's probably deserves
	less consideration.

	I am looking forward to your next show preferably when you are 
	headlining.

    to switch slots. It's open for discussion.
    
    As I said somewhere else, Symphony #1 is nearly complete. It stands
    at 15 minutes 24 seconds right now. Longest metal tune I know of.
    John did all the writing, I wrote the opening sinister death riff
    and arranged the whole thing. Lyrics are in the works. I want to add

	Keith Poulin - Vocals
	Keith has four years experience as a vocalist, and has played

	Mystic Powers' songs.  Keith was born  and raised in  Clinton
	Massachusetts. He uses Shure microphones and Peavey equipment.

	John Lally - Guitar
	John has played  throughout  New England for many years since

    That drum set was terrible! I was expecting four toms!
    

    Yeah I thought the pedals sucked. They were really bouncy. I thought
    the overall show went really good. There were so many people.. Last
    time I played the No Bozos there, it was a full house. The Antrax tune
    seemed to go over well, but it was hard pulling it off with that drum
    set. I like playing at Derringers,because we practice right upstairs
    from the club. You guys should try and book another show there.

    I've been thinking about that. I don't think it would be a problem
    since we're not making any money at this show, so no royalties. He'd
    probably get a kick out of it. I don't know though, we'll probably
    wind up doing all originals that day.

    Pete, I think you were asking about covering a song from a band that
    you will be opening for.  I say NO!!  I doubt if the other band will
    like it, and I would AT LEAST make sure that the song you plan on doing
    isn't in their intended set.  But I still think it shouldn't be played
    at all.

    Three reasons why :-
    
    1) If you cover the song and do it badly, the band may be offended and
       you'll look like a bunch of amatuers.
    2) If you cover the song and do it really well, the band are gonna be
       pi$$ed at you for making a better job of it than them.
    3) Why would the audience want to hear the same song twice in one
       evening, live ?

    Good news about the first release. We're going into the studio, 24
    track, on December 13, 14, and 15. Gonna be living there while we
    record. Doing at at Barking Spider Studios in Sudbury which is
    a most triumphant place! We'll be doing 4-5 tunes. Cassettes are
    a definite, CD's will be pressed if we can get them in lots of
    less than 500 at a time.

    It went good. We went on early so there were more band people there
    than audience. We were easily the heaviest band there except for
    Wargasm.
    
    We went over time so they had to cut us off, except they just did it
    without telling us or signalling us. I whipped my drum sticks
    some where, never did find them. 8-)

    Well, I happen to REALLY like the MOSH...it's different...I like the
    lyrics, and the groove is very original.  
    
    I would also try and put forth a more cohesive set of songs for your
    demo.  That is why I picked the tunes I did.  I would leave the ballard
    (missing you) off...it just doesn't really fit with the others...not
    that it;s bad...it's cool when you do it live, but for shopping a demo,
    I'd use the time to record something on a tune that was more reflective 
    of what the band is REALLY about musically.

    goes out the door quality-wise is a lot more important than, say,
    Longview who already has a good rep, and doesn't really care if your
    project ends up sounding like crap, you know?
    
    Also, Rob and Steve are WAY cool, and are a lot easier to work with

    I wanted to squeeze in 5 songs, but we're using 2" tape and the max
    is 2500 feet which is like 16 minutes, and I really don't want to
    push it. I'd rather have some footage to play with if we need it.

    Well, I have HEARD the new Wilson Philips, er, Mystic Powers tape!!!
    
    Here's a brief review:
    
    Armeggedon - A tad fast on the tempo side, although the song went well
    to tape.  For this type of song, I would have preferred a rhythm guitar
    part in support of the guitar solo, but I guess the author wanted that
    sort of empty feeling in that section.  The mix is *ok*...the lead
    vocals are a little too loud, as is the bass guitar.  Overall, the
    guitar was down in the mix, and the bass guitar much louder.  I think
    if Pete's band decides to re-mix, the guitar should be stoked and the
    ld vox come down a bit.
    
    Life in the Fast Lane -- Nice version to tape...but would have been
    better with more guitar and background vocals.
    
    Uncongretional Mosh -- Yet another song that sounds good to tape, but
    here Steve's roolin background vocals really need to come up in the mix!
    I didn't think the guitar sound fit this type of song, but hey, *I*
    wasn't playing producer on the session!  Also, this song's tempo was a
    tad to fast...for it to be REALLY moshy, it would need to be slower and
    more deliberate.
    
    Invasion -- A new tune to my ears...probably the thrashiest tun on the
    tape.  Again, I didn't think the chorused guitar sound fit the style of 
    music.  The guitarist (John) definitely has roots in Iron Maiden and 
    Black Sabbath, and when he goes for this type of guitar sound, it only
    serves to help the music sound more like Iron Maiden, than, say, S.O.D.!
    
    F.D.D. -- Another new tune, and this was my favorite on the tape!! 
    This IMVHO was the best mixed and recorded song, and should go first on
    demo pressings.  If the other 4 songs were mixed as well as this one
    was, the MP demo would be pretty killer...as is the tape is good, but
    the unbalanced mix tends to overshadow the bands intentions a tad to much.
    
    
    BOTTOM LINE COMMENTS:  I think a re-mix is nec.  I feel the guitar
    sound doesn't fit the style of music a lot of times (it's *very* 80s
    metal guitar sound...not the raunchy Seattle-based guitar sound of the
    90s which is popular with so many thrash bands).  I guess MP has to
    decide wether they want to be a thrash band or more of an Iron Maiden
    kind of band, and adjust the guitar sound accordingly.  Also, the
    tempos on some of the songs could have been better...*I* would suggest
    playing some to a metronome next time you record (like the MOSH would
    have been much better is the tempo was more solid).  That's also one
    aspect that recoerd people pick up on...a band's ability to hold a
    constant tempo (fyi).  Keith sounds good voally on this tape, but I
    would have tried some different types of fx processing on his voice.
    It, too, tended to sometimes sound too OZZYish, in the sense of that
    chorused vocal sound.  Chorus is cool, but you gotta know how to use it
    effectively. 
    
    ...and that's it.  Overall, I think it's a good tape, and a big step up
    from the last one.

    We're definitely going more towards an Iron Maiden type of sound than
    thrash. I really don't classify our material as thrash, that's only one
    part of the whole picture.
    
    As far as the metronome stuff, Uncongressional Mosh wasn't played to a 
    click track because there are very subtle timing changes in parts of the 
    song and it would waste of time (i.e. $$) to program it.
    
    The remix has been set up. I agree, the vocals down, the guitar up, the
    bass down a hair, and I want my bass drums punchier and up a bit. I like 
    what's on tape, it's just getting all the levels perfect.

    The remix is done, and sounds *excellent*!

    The guitar level is much better, the vocals are mixed in better,
    the highs are there much more than the last mix, the bass drums
    sound much better, the cymbals and the toms sound better, and the
    over all bass level isn't so high.

    Great!...I want my own copy, or something to hear...because the PA
    didn't do it as much justice as it should.
    
    It could have been the PA but Mister_Testament_Vocalist :-)....his
    vocals stood out a little bit more than the rest. Nothing bad though.
    
    And like Steve said the cymbals could have used a little work.
    
    Other than that..I enjoyed it a lot.

    	The vocals did stand out, but they should. We brought them
    	down compared to the first mix and I think they're perfect.
    
    	As far as the cymbal levels needing work, not really. I'm happy
    	with it. They're up loud enough but not over-bearing. I wouldn't
    	have minded seeing the hihats up a bit more but like I said, I'm
    	still more then happy with it.
    
    	The setup you heard it on wasn't the best. 8-)
    
    	Unlike the first mix, this sounds good even on a chincy boombox.
    	On a home stereo with crappy speakers it sounds real good. On
    	a home stereo with good speakers it sounds great! [especially
    	F.D.D. 8-)]

    
    Apparently we just found out that Mystic Powers is being played over
    the local Worcester cable TV station. I believe it's a gig from the
    cove.
    
    We didn't even know! I truck driver that was staying in Worcester
    was talking to Steve at work and said he saw one of ours shows
    on tv. I nearly *&$#!

If this is true, you should sue the sh*t outta The Cove and the station.
Did you sign a release ??  Our contracts all say "No video taping unless
accompanied by a seperate contract".  This way you get royalties.  :)

    years, blaming the delay on those blasted j-cards, but if you'd
    bothered to pull your finger out a short while back we could have
    been playing the demo on our own stereos by now.  Just remember what
    happened to GNR, if they'd been a bit quicker with the illusion albums

    	My initial listen was on a portable cassette palyer of mine that 
    	is in about as good a shape of me at the moment, it has a bad
    	connection that causes one channel to fade in and out from time 
    	to time so I'll just give a quick & short reply for now.
    
    	Overall the package was real nice, the inserts as already mentioned
    	and the mix in sounded really good excoept for somethings I'm still
    	not sure are the result of the tape or not.  I did find the title 
    	track "Life in the Fast Lane" to have everyone coming though nice 
    	and clear excpet for you!  The drums seemed to be lost in the mix
    	but that may be the result of my tape player.  I will give it more
    	than another listen though, I like the energy that comes across
    	from all the songs and the guitar work is fine, bass too.
    
    	And like yourself, if I remember right, I enjoyed your first gig
    	at the Channel too.  It's not so much my relating the tape to your
    	live sound in which I thought all instruments and vocals came through
    	very good but again from my first listen the tape didn't appear to 
    	do your playing justice primarily on the title track but I'll have 
    	to go back for more listens and on another player for sure.

    I got my tape yesterday (thanks Pete!!).
    
    Here is a very brief review...
    
    I've only listend to this on my boom box...the cymbols are there,
    but I can bring them up with my lil 5 band eq, so they must be on
    a freq I don't have.  Overall I don't think the mix is bad at all
    ...much better than the first pass I heard.
    
    The only negative comments I have are 1) the guitar sound, and 2)
    the solos.  I'm just personally sick of that chorused guitar sound,
    and would have liked to have heard something more in the death vien,
    you know, burning mega distortion, minus fx (cept a little verb).
    
    Most of the solos leave me a little cold.  They seem, to me, to be 
    just sort of fast noodling.  Again, I personally would have liked to
    have had more themeatic solos that fit the songs better, but that is
    just me, another guitar player speaking.
    
    I don't particulally like that vocal delay thing on the first two lines
    of Invasion...it's like, it's there, then it never is heard again for
    therest of the song...any reason you guys did that??
    
    God, all these negative comments...overall, I like the tape...the
    J cards came out really nice, and the tape copy sounds good, so it's
    a nice package.  I hope it get's you lots of gigs.

    Life In THe Fast Lane:

    	See I'm a huge Testament fan, and this song reminds me SO much of
    them. The vocal technique is just like Chuck Billy's [Testament].
    That's probably the reason I like the song so much. The rest of the
    instruments are there. They don't strike me as much as the vocals
    though.
    
    Uncongressional Mosh:
    ---------------------
    The only two things I don't like about the song is 1) it's too short,
    2) the 'bagged by cia a line'. The second one doesn't bother me that
    much, I just wish the chorus was a little longer so it doesn't seem to
    be repeated as much. I do like (again) the way it's sung. The bass and
    drums stand out a little more in this song.
    
    F.D.D:
    ------
    
    	I'm a fantatic double bass fan, so that's my favorite part of the
    song. The guitars sound a little ordinary in this song. The bass is
    pretty good. The only thing I don't like is the way it's sung.

    	I have to agree with Buck. The part where 'agony' is repeated, I
    don't really like it. The rest of the singing isn't bad. The guitars
    stand out a little more in this song than the rest.
    
    Armageddon:

    	My favorite MP tune. I like everything on it. The drums, bass,
    guitar and singing. I can't find anything I don't like.

    	Keith Poulin = Chuck Billy. IMO. So I pretty much like his style.

    	Steve is really good. Keeps the beat and never strays. Plus

    	The rythm is great, but I agree with Buck that the solos weren't
    too awe inspiring. I did like some of them, but most didn't jump out.

    	I dunno about this drummer guy... he's real good, but doesn't show off
    his talent as much as he should. Should relax off the ride just a l'il
    bit. 
    
    
    All-in-all  I liked it a lot. J-cards came out great. even though my

    I think that Invasion is the best sounding tune on the tape, even with
    the weido echo thing.  Also, on the tag ending, curious why you
    sustained the last chord?  I think it might have been a tad more
    effective stacatto?
    
    Also, a slight nit, I don't know if I think the "A special f... off to
    the <insert several police dept. names here>"  Read sort of sophomoric,
    and I think some people (potential employees) might be put off by it.
    Also, the plural of "life" is "Lives".

    Ok, ok, I've listened to it a few times.  Just wanted to pop in here
    and do my review while it's fresh in my mind.
    
    Overall: good recording!  The songs are strong and the quality is very
    good.
    
    Comments:  
    
    I don't particularly care for Keith's voice that much.  I've never
    liked that particular vocal style (Testament, etc.) and that still
    holds true.  It's not *bad*, just not to my taste.  Plus, the range his
    sings in makes you adjust the EQ of the other instruments to fit around
    it and I think it kills some of the frequencies of those instruments
    that I like to hear.
    
    I didn't like the delay on the vocals on the first few lines of
    Invasion and Armageddon.  On Invasion, it seemed like the delayed
    signal had to come in too fast to get out of the way, so it was choppy
    sounding.  I think a second voice singing the line, but slightly
    overlapping with the lead line would be more effective.  The delay on
    Armageddon was too fast, almost sounded like a tremelo effect or
    something.  It might work if you doubled the delay time.
    
    The words in the title track blaze by so fast that there's no way I'd
    ever get 'em without the lyric sheet.  Whatever, that's just a style. 
    I don't particularly like or dislike it, just noticed it.  There were a
    few words or phrases in some of the other songs (F.D.D. comes to mind)
    that didn't seem to fit very well, but were still kind of jammed in
    there.  No biggie, I'll probably get used to it.
    
    I have to agree with what someone said earlier about the guitar sound. 
    I think it's too processed for this kind of music, especially during
    the solos, when the flanger (chorus, whatever it is) makes it sound out
    of tune sometimes.  Small duration time based effects (chorus, flange)
    get on my nerve if they're used too much and I think they are on this
    tape.  I think a dryer, punchier guitar sound would work better.
    
    High points:  Killer snare sound (too bad most of the rest of the drums
    are buried most of the time), Excellent bass sound, solid performances
    all around.  My favorite songs are Uncongressional Mosh and Armageddon
    (although I have to admit that I prefer the performances and feel of
    the version of the latter on the first demo tape you sent me to this
    one).
    
    Mix:  If I were mixing this, I'd have pulled the drums up just a hair
    and the vocals down a little.  I know that songs are built around
    vocals, but I thought these were still a little heavy.  I like drums in
    your face and these were kind of sitting in the background more.  This
    could be a result of what my stereo augments, I'll give it a listen in
    the Walkman tomorrow and see if I have the same opinion.
    
    Don't let these little negative things make it sound like I'm down on
    your tape or your music, these are really very minor issues as far as
    I'm concerned.  Like I said to start with, overall it's a very nice,
    professional sounding tape.  Congrats Pete.  Good work!
    
    Oh yeah...one thing, I'd probably leave off the explicit reference to
    DEC in the "Thank You"'s.  Just a CYA thing...

    I've seen some "J" cards that are folded almost like an envelope and
    the tape slide into it.  One side has holes in it for the cassette case
    spikes (or whatever you call them) to slide thru.  Maybe that would be
    better.  Then you caould leave the font size readable without a

Overall, very good demo!  (Wish I could comment on the inlay card, but it's 
kinda MIA at the momento)  I will say that I was suprised by how professional
the cover-art looked... I mean it's the same thing as before but MY what color
can do eh?  I haven't even had a chance to read the damn thing to tell you the
truth...

Okay, song by song here is my sacred review.

-Life In The Fast Lane-
	I like the beginning...it makes ya wanna get up and start bangin' your
	head but I can't exactly do that at this point in time cuz I'm not in 
	the right "atmosphere"...Er, yes I'm ready to GTFO can ya tell?  Okay,
	on with the show.  The singer definitely has balls.  I like his voice
	but not the way he uses it sometimes.  It's a cool song all 'n' all 
	thow.  The solo shreds, btw!  I can hear my phone ringing at home 
	right now but I'm not there.  This ESP can be quite annoying sometimes.
	8)  I tell you what though, that drummer sure is quite a maniac why 
	there's not even *one* drum-beatless moment in the song.  8)

-Uncongressional Mosh-
	This definitely ties with Armageddon as being my favorite.  I'm 
	extremely fond of changes in format like you did in the beginning.
  	It's like, "Ooh, fast tune.  No wait a minute!  Slow tune fast tune 
	slow tune fast tune slow tune fast tune" .........excuse me I get 
	caught up in vicious circles sometimes.  8)  Anyway, I like that 
	thingy.  It takes a pretty talented drummer to pull that off I tell 
	ya.  Again, the singer kinda er, needs to tone-down a bit to get that
	"hard-core" feel...maybe its just me but it seems like he's holding 
	back.  Whenever he says something to the effect of "You don't pay 
	you'll go away cuz you've been backed by CIA" I think that could sound
	so much more raw if he if he if he if he just toned down a little.
	The song rulz though, don't get me wrong!  Hell, you could probably 
	even spot me in the mosh pit at one of your shows...Speaking of that, I 
	can get you gigs all over the place down here dude!  There's a very
	big market for thrash in the Dallas/Austin area.  But that's a fact
	and I'm here to give ya an opinion...  Bonkers you say?

	What does this stand for?  Anyway, the guitar in the beginning is 
	gnarlier than the waterbugs down here!  It's like a short yet
	neverending kinda thaing.  Okay...the singer really gets on my nerves
	dude.  Sounds like he needs to clear his throat or something...and he's
	not even growling man!  Definitely needs to listen to more Deicide. 8)
	Uhh.  The drums are wicked fast and right on time just like their 
	supposed to be. ;)  Other than that, I don't know what to say...Like I
	actually know wot I'm talking about anyway you say?  I like the guitars
	towards the middle of the song when it just kinda stops and goes into a 
	(something) and fades back in real soft then you start bangin' away.

	Okay, this is it!  This is the song that really gets ya psyched... Rape
	and pillage dude...I like the effects on the singer (helped a little it

	At long last my favorite!  Not only are the lyrics a complete 
	masterpiece but the guitarist is really (doing something, whoa listen
	to that dude!)...I really think the basssist is doing something too, 
	but wot do I know??  But that drummer boyee, he tops 'em all.  8-P  
	The rolls sound perrrrrrrrrrrrfect and the double bass sounds (not so
	good for all those who think I'm just kissin' pete's ass...bend over

    Okay, Pete, I won't make you wait any longer.
    
    Packaging..... the J-cards looked great.  The color was worth waiting
    for.  As someone else said, might want to use thinner card stock next
    time around, so the tape is easier to get in and out of the case. 
    You know about the typos already I'm sure.  Also, sometimes when lyrics
    are repeated, they reprinted; sometimes they aren't.  It's alittle
    confusing.
    
    Quality of tape..... no complaints there.  I played it on my home
    stereo, my car stereo and my sh!tty little Walkman clone.  Sounded
    great on all with improvements in clarity as the equipment improved.
    
    The Music...... EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Like I said before, I'm
    not technical, I can't play, but I know what I like and I REALLY liked
    it.  In fact, I was sitting at my desk today headbanging to it
    (fortunately no one saw me).  This sucker has BA!!S and it definitely
    rocks the house.  
    
    Suggestions.......
    
    Life in the Fast Lane...  I especially loved the music on this one. 
    Good thing, too, because I couldn't understand a word Keith was singing
    except for the chorus.  It didn't matter to me, though, cuz the music
    really carried the song.  However, after I read the J-card, it seems
    like the lyrics were trying to squeeze too much into each verse line,
    which is probably why he was rushing so much.  
    
    Uncongressional Mosh.... Like 'pril, I really got into those tempo
    changes at the beginning and it carried over well.  I like the vocal
    style Keith used on this one.  The lyrics had a good idea, but it seem
    not to get developed.  Song definiately needs another verse.  Another
    suggestion... I would've like to have heard a gunshot (preferably a
    silenced one) instead of a door slamming.  I think would have tied in
    better with the 'you been bagged by the CIA' line.
    
    F.D.D.... I loved this one.  Reminded of early Metallica.  The only
    thing I didn't like was that it ended too soon.  In fact, that's my
    majority complaint... the tape was too short,  I want MORE!!!!!!!
    
    Invasion... The double echo on the first two lines didn't really do
    anything for the song.  I think the second and fourth verses need to be
    repeated instead of just the second.  Or another verse.  Again, it left
    me wanting more.
    
    Armaggedon... I loved this one, too.  It tied with FDD for my favorite
    on the tape.  In fact, think it even beats it out because I like the
    lyrics better (you can't tell I'm into that, can you?)  Again, I would
    suggest changing the pattern of the song.  As it is, you do verse 1 2 3
    2 instrumental break and 4.  I would try 1 2 3 instrumental break 2 4.
    
    Overall comments.....
    
    I can't fault anything with the music...  the balance between the
    instruments sounded good to me.  The solos were all good and fit the
    songs.  It's obviously a band playing together and not four guys each
    taking their turn at showing off.  Generally (AND NO I AM NOT KISSING
    UP) I prefered Pete's lyrics to Steve's.  You have a more concise
    style, which I think is required, especially as thrashy (is that a
    word) as you guys are.  I think Life in the Fast Lane showed that
    particularly, though FDD was very good.  Keith has a good vocal style
    that definiately fits in with the rest of the band.
    
    To sum it all up, and you could probably tell by a couple of my
    comments, it absolutely left me wanting more!!  I haven't had it out of
    the tape player all day (nice touch recording on both sides, as my
    Walkman clone only has fast forward).  I think I've listened to it 5
    times today and it'll definitely be in my car stereo on the way home.

    That's interesting, because it felt to me like Steve was frequently
    trying to force more words in than the meter would allow.  I also found
    some of the imagery to be alittle too vague.  Pete's style is more
    simplistic and I don't mean that in a bad way.  I think it's a case of
    less is more and I thought the words he used more clearly invoked the
    image he was looking for in a lot of cases.
    
    But then, again, we only got five songs to go by... so I may be way off
    base.
    
    oh, Pete, by the way, I had an experience very similar to Crazy Al's
    with your tape.  Me and the hubby were flipping through the channels
    the other night and caught one of those alarmist Christian specials on
    rock music.  They even had the nerve to state that it was a balanced,
    comprehensive review of rock music and then they proceeded to pick out
    avowed Satanists like King Diamond and death metal bands and hold them
    up like they represented the entire industry.  Typical!!!!!!!!!  
    
    We got in a vicious argument about the whole thing, particularly since
    he doesn't like metal and doesn't know what he's talking about.  I told
    him that the bands profiled were a very SMALL minority of the total
    rock field, and even of the metal genre itself and that there were
    plenty of the metal bands that weren't like that.
    
    The next day, he came in while I was listening to your demo tape and he
    started to make some rude comments when Armaggedon came on.  I took out
    the J-card and made him read the lyrics.  He was forced to conceed the
    argument.

    Since we both like EJ, you know I'm way into the lyrics as well as the
    music.  I do like complex lyrics and I do like varied meter, but my
    point was that for the kind of speed metal Mystic Powers does (at least
    on this demo tape), I think Steve's trying to jam too much into the
    lines and it sounds forced on FITL.  I didn't find that to be the case
    on FDD.
    
    Anyway, since I seem to be totally misunderstood today, I'm going home!
    
    

    I don't think I'm negative.  But, understand the environment which I
    was schooled in.  At Berklee, there was always room for improvement,
    always someone better, or something new to aspire to, always someone
    with a different outlook.
    
    Basically, I learned a few things:
    
    * Never rest on your laurels
    * Nothing is ever perfect
    * Be open to constructive criticism from others...you can grow frmo
      others insight
    * Keep an open mind
    * Always try to make a good thing better
    
    
    In summary, I think what I see as constructive criticism you may be
    just viewing as total negativity on my part.  Not really the case.
    Do I think the MP demo is good...yes.  Do I think the MP demo is
    perfect...no.  Do I have ideas how I would have done things
    differently...yes.  Does it really matter to MP...no.  Should MP
    care...maybe.  I don't think any band is better off if everyone always
    told them "Man, your stuff is the best, I wouldn't change a thing".
    If I have a somewhat strong opinion on something (like my comments on
    the guitar sound for the perceived genre), it was stated as FYI and
    to possibly help some decisions for the future.

    comments to come off as negative or abrasive.  Sorry if they did.

    I've never been one to rant long and hard about how good something is
    (and the notes you've seen from me over the years, about virtually any
    topic, should testify to this), but I will often describe in detail
    things I might like to be different.  Call it a character flaw. 
    Doesn't mean I don't like things just because I think something might
    be better if it were changed.

    I thought you wanted to hear about things like that.  If not, then I
    can stop writing up what I'd do differently when I hear your tapes and
    just tell you how great they are and leave it at that.

    keep going straight (Water st.).  When you get to the end of the road,

	Directions to Rhythms in Clinton, MA.

	From the North:  Take route 495 South to the exit for Route 62
	Berlin/Hudson. Head towards Berlin/Cinton on route 62 West. You will
	through Berlin Center and eventually come to an intersection after
	some railroad tracks. Stay on route 62! Follow this until it intersects
	with route 70. Take a right. You'll pass by the Clinton court house
	and the dam will be in your left. Keep going straight and stay on
	route 62/70. You'll come to an island where a road breaks off to
	the right and the police station is on the right. Stay to the left
	on 62/70. It'll come around in back of the police station and come
	to a stop sign. Take a left, and go straight, you're still on
	62/70. At the bottom of the hill is main street. There's a donut
	shop at this corner. Take a right. 

	Rhythms is on the right after the Video store. It's 601 Main
	street. If you pass under the bridge, you just missed it!

      CLINTON - Listen up, metalheads.
    
      Rhythms on Main Street will be the scene of an all-day heavy metal
    bash tommorrow, from 2:45 to 6 p.m.
    
      The show will feature three bands, including Clinton-based Mystic
    Powers, a band formed in 1989 by Steve Garry, who has also organized
    the show at Rhythms.
      
      In an interview earlier this week, Garry said concern over young
    people in town with little to do for entertainment prompted his
    involvement in the show.
    
      "The main purpose is to get kids involvedin something. It's good
    entertainment for kids who are unable to get into bars; and it keeps
    them away from alcohol," Garry said.
    
      The event is open to people of all ages. No alcoholic beverages will
    be served. There will be a $5 admission price, the proceeds of which
    will go to the bands and the club owner.
    
      Besides Mystic Powers, Clintonians can thrash to the tunes of
    Sangiunary, from Holliston, and Framingham based Genocide. All three
    groups have played in clubs from Boston to Worcester. Garry's band
    was featured regularly last year at Sir Morgan's Cove in Worcester
    and played several times at The Channel in Boston.
    
      Garry, 26, plays bass guitar and writes most of the songs. Keith
    Poulin is the lead vocalist. Both are Clinton natives. Rounding out
    the group is veteran drummer Peter Cook, from Los Angeles, and Hudson
    native John Lally, on guitar.
    
      "We play hard driving music," Garry said.
    
      He described their style as "fast, progressive and devastating heavy
    metal," which was influenced by metal mavericks Black Sabbath, Iron
    Maiden, and Motorhead. The group recently released their first
    all-original cassette EP containing fgive songs which will be heard on
    radio stations across the country.
    
      Sangiunary also has a demo tape in the can.
    
      Garry said the concert tommorrow is his first attempt at organizing 
    a multi-group event. Rhythms owner Wilma Feliciano said a big crowd is
    expected. She said pizza and hot dogs will be available at the show.
    
      "We're really into the people. There was nothing to do and nowhere to
    go in Clinton when I was growing up. There's got to be more," Garry
    said.

    Well, I was happy with the turn out. For Rhythms, it was pretty full.
    We made out well. I wish the weather had been nicer. Everyone I talked
    to loved the show.
    
    Now for some IMHO's....Sangiunary is looking for a new drummer. Thank
    God! With a new drummer, they'll be MUCH better.
    
    Genocide did great. I really like these guys and look forward to
    doing more shows with them. All very cool people to work with.
    We're doing a show with them at the W.A.G. in Worcester on 5/1.
    
    Our set felt good to me. We ripped through the tunes at hyper-speed.
    No mistakes. Good reception and lot's of positive comments.
    
    The intro theme sounded way cool. Started with the theme from the
    Exorcist and goes into the beginning of Toccata and Fugue in Dm.
    
    

    
    
    
    How was the turnout of local 'kids'.. Alot of new faces show up?

    I enjoyed the show Saturday - I planned on missing the first two shows
    and got there in plenty of time to talk to some folks from H_M and meet
    Tracey before they went on.
    
    Tracey and I slid up to the front and realized to late that we couldn't
    scream since we were right next to the video camera taping the event 
    and there were quite a feww times I wanted to scream my approval of a
    song. I am no music expert but will say that I thought they sounded 
    great - the lead guitar was really shy (kept hiding behind equipment), 
    the bass player was kicking butt and truly enjoyed the spotlight.  The 
    lead singer sounded pretty good - since I never heard the MP tapes and was
    not familiar with their tunes I was impressed with the lyrics I heard. 
    Peter seemed to really keep the pace and keep the band moving along
    from one song to the next and kept the audience interest at a peak.
    I liked it so much I bought a tape...BTW, loved the insert - I hope you
    saw it Buck.
    
    All in all very enjoyable - It was not a full house but I think only
    because the advertising was not planned well by the club.  
    
    Looking forward to the next gig.

    never seen before, and alot of friends who usually don't come to
    shows because it's "not their cup of tea".
    
    I was p.o.'d about the owner not advertising but between uas and the
    Clinton paper, I think it was sufficient.

	The first band s (something - Death Metal) SUCKED!!! BIG TIME!!

	Genocide was awesome!!!  They sounded great, the guitarist

    actually it took a while to grow on me. I didn't like it at all
    at first! 8-)

    I liked it from the start,its very simple lyrically but the chorus is
    great,easy to remember,chant along kind of stuff.The demo has a very
    Iron Maiden sound to it.I'll write more abou it tomorrow,but in every

    I have send a bunch more out anyway, but I'm waiting because I can't
    keep taking the loss I have been (i.e. people not paying).

    
    The Spring Music Conference went well. The first thing we learned was
    that alot more people know our name and music than I had ever thought.
    Everyone I talked to from CGY and everyone else liked the stuff, 
    including Warfield.
    
    We got our package to Critque/BMG and a few others, and we're looking
    forward to results either good or bad, as it will help us in the long
    run either way.
    
    They did a tape critique session and our tape was played. Steve and I
    got up and I talked a bit about it and responded to panel question
    for about 10 minutes. Got very good comments on our tape and real good
    comments on my responses afterwards. I was wicked nervous, playing in 
    front of alot of people is one thing, fielding questions and comments 
    from industry people is another! From what I heard and felt, it was 
    very very good publicity for us. They had me up there for the longest, 
    asked me all sorts of questions, one thing that came up was computer
    networking to help promotion. They liked the tape, packaging, and seemed
    to be imporessed with the press kit and my knowledge of how, what,
    where to get things done. It was a high point. 
    
    The seminars were very informative, and it was worth the money. Overall
    I came away with a good feeling about our future. There weren't
    many people from metal bands there, so we've gotten an advantage over 
    ALOT of others by attending this conference and starting to get the 
    contacts and information we need to get signed to the labels that deal
    with our kind of music.

You did a good job though! I could tell that they were impressed with your
package and stuff, and that it seemed you had your sh*t together. (I bet
they hear a lot of music from people who aren't nearly as organized, or

you are to listen openly to suggestions and criticisms.)

I agree, it was a *very* good conference for the local musician. You could
find out a TON of information about a wide variety of subjects, and you
could make some good contacts. Pete, you shoulda stuck around for the 
Booking and Management panel, you probably woulda got a lot out of it....

    from New York, a band called Outpatient. They were good! The show went
    well and the pit was killer!!! Best all ages show crowd yet.

    I just got off the phone with Rod Stevens from Critique/BMG records.
    He was one of the industry reps at the SMC. He's listened to the first
    half of the tape and wants to spend some more time on it. I'll talk
    to him more on Wednesday. He seemed very positive, and I was surprised
    he listened to more than the first song (you know how A&R reps can be).
    
    I doubt we'd get signed, but at worst, any feedback I can get from him 
    will help us in the long run when soliciting to other companies.

I tell ya Pete, that seminar was great for connections, huh? I just got off
the phone with the guy from Don Law - he listend to the tape, liked it a lot,
and wants to come hear us sometime! If I had approached him cold, he probably 
never would have listened to the tape (he said he gets 50-100 tapes a week!).
But he listened to it right away, and sounds like he might give us a shot!
(Not bad, considering this guy also books Great Woods and the Orpheum!)

Cool about BMG - keep us updated on what he has to say, eh?

    being filmed?  I've been filming bands as a hobbie for a couple of
    years using 8mm, cabled remote microphones and you'd be surprised at
    the quality of audio.  Naturally, I would give you a copy of the tape.

Mr. Tipps and Edible Rex are not the same place.  The Rex is at the Concord
Rd. exit from Route 3 and Tipps is at the Treble Cove Road exit from Route 3.

Last I heard the Rex was still Edible, though it does smell bad. :-)

    The station is in Boston ant the corner of Comm and Brighton Ave 
    and the tower is in Natick. The signal is weaker at night than in 
    the day. 
    
    We'll be doing more, definitely one at WJUL in Lowell. You should

    Unfortunately, their roster is full right now and he would want to 
    dedicate alot of time to a project such as ours. Meanwhile he will 
    keep us in consideration, and pass along the good word to other record 
    companies' A&R reps. He said we could very well be hearing from
    someone.

    Not to me. I've met him in person, and he's not the typical A&R rep.
    In fact, he told me I could use him as a reference. From what I
    gathered, Critique records doesn't do Heavy Metal bands.

    Heard the show advertised on WCGY today. Great feeling.

I'm one of the people that told Bob this; once someone plays 'CGY night, kiss
your airplay goodbye. I'm interested to see what happens after you folks have
played 'CGY night (curious, that's all).

Granted, our release was late 1990. A friend of ours called and told us that
'CGY had been playing the "Go Betweens" tune from time-to-time. We couldn't
have been getting requests, we had not told *anyone* to call and request it
(esp. since we didn't know it was even happening). Our guitarist called Harvey
just to say "Thanks for playing the tune", and then ended getting a gig a 
couple of months down the road.  The tune got played 6 out of 8 Sunday's 
before the gig, after the gig nothing for a couple of weeks.

Put some friends up to calling, still no airplay. Bummed?! Naw, it's amasing
it got that much air in the first place being that old. Expected to loose it
anyway, with all the new stuff being sent (that's why we're studio bound!).
Was fun while it lasted...

    I think he means adding one. I'd like to, we've talked about it
    but I don't think Steve is up on it. We haven't really talked alot 
    about it lately.
    

    The main thing that bugs me about Mp is the guitar player.  Well,
    I am one, so naturally I'm going to be a little biased there...
    John is a good player, I just don't think he fits well with Steve
    and Kieth's SOUND.  I think a real thrashy rockin player would work
    better in the MP ensemble, but that is just my 0.02 on the issue.
    

	He is better live than he is on tape, on the tape the
	guitarist doesn't sound very good....

	If you guys ever got the guy from Genocide you would be
	unbelieveable...

    FWIW, I agree with Buck and Seth, but don't tell anyone. 8-)

    I meant add one for a bigger sound.The guy who pays ith you(oo er)is
    good but the adding of another guitarist would be a more in your face
    sound.I'm not very keen on the song Armageddon(sp)just when I'm on a 
    moaning mood.Its a big too 'Maiden to be original and the lyrics are
    quite chessey(if you know what I mean)the rest of the songs especially
    "uncongressional mosh" are spot on!

    I always thought they should add another guitarist that could sing with
    a different voice type than Keith.  Especially for the ballads.  Keiths
    good for the really thrashing songs, but a contrasting voice for
    backups on those songs would be nice too.  Steve sounds too much like
    Keith to make a difference.

    You seem to have misconstrued me...I didn't say he was a bad PLAYER,
    moreso, I don't think his sound/style gels well with Steve's musical
    vision.  A guitar player in the WASP vein, I think, would work well.

    Not really Buck...  I wasn't really talking to you directly, I
    was just kind of making my own observation...  If anything my
    statement was directed more at Staynz, because he hasn't seen
    them live....


    I was just giving my opinion, not really going against or for
    you Buck... FWIW

    I wasn't saying he was a bad player,I have no right to give anyone
    abuse(ok,I occasionally do but what the hell!)as my playing is crap.The
    sound I was refering to was an overall sound for the band.

    I think a second guitar player makes any band a bit more interesting.
     As long as they don't step on each other...
      FWIW-I think the MP guitar player is o.k. but needs to change his
    TONE to a BIG,FULL sound.

    Yep, I'm John about it constantly. We had alot of trouble finding a
    guitarist originally and we settled with him. Besides, he's rich. 8-)
