I just picked up the new album by these guys, called "Dirty". I guess you can classify them as heavy metal, although they tend to lean a little more towards the punk/alternative side of things. They've been around for *years*, but this is the first time I've actually heard some of their stuff. (I know they also toured with Neil Young last year, and EVERYONE seem to hate them!) I haven't had a chance to listen to the whole thing yet, just the first five songs. Quite interesting....... For the most part, I think I like it. It takes a little getting used to, I must say. It first comes across just as noise, but after a few listens it all starts to sound somewhat organized, like "oh, it's _supposed_ to sound this way"! The first song, "100%" is getting some airplay on MTV (oddly enough). There's no info on the band inside - anyone know the band member's names? The album was produced Butch Vig, who also did Nirvana's last album. alan

I wouldn't call 'em "metal" myself, but who cares, they're interesting and good discussion. I don't know the drummer's name, but the guitar players are Lee Ronaldo (sp?) and Thurston Moore and the bass player is Kim Gordon. Thurston sings most of the songs and seems to be the band spokesperson for the most part. Kim sings on a few songs. I have their last release "Goo" and like the songs on it quite a bit. After all the furor about how "terrible" they were when touring with Neil Young, I thought they'd have a much more punk noise sort of sound then they do. Yeah, there's a little of that on there, but for the most part they have fairly melodic songs. What I've heard is that the new album is more mellow then their older material. I'm a little surprised that you like them, Alan. Doesn't seem like something you'd normally get into. FWIW, there's a bigger discussion of them in RADIO_RADIO note 226, and a little one on the guitar players in GUITAR note 1885. Greg |
